The George Washington Parkway in Virginia is shut down between the Capital Beltway and Virginia Route 123 after the roadway was compromised following heavy rains Thursday night.
The damage is on the northbound lanes before, but the entire parkway has been closed between the Capital Beltway and Virginia Route 123. Northbound lanes closed shortly before 6 a.m.
The closure on the heavily traveled commuter route is causing massive backups on the Beltway and roads into D.C.
Both the National Park Service and Fairfax County Fire & Rescue described as a sinkhole.
Crews are getting on the scene to assess the damage.
The closure is expected to last through the morning rush hours, according to Jenny Anzelmo-Sarles, spokeswoman for the the National Park Service.
