Consider, the DOJ was being briefed by Mueller on a massive network of corruption and conspiracy to subvert Due Process of Law. They have a responsibility to begin monitoring, at the very least, and reporting to investigators.

This is all going to escalate quickly. Mueller's report contains the activities of Page, Manafort, etc, as well as someone else (I suspect Kushner) and their interactions with the conspirators (some may not be criminals knowingly participating, just with backgrounds useful to the narrative).

There is also the concept of treason being fundamentally different from many other crimes in the standards and process of conviction. If you are part of a conspiracy to overthrow the Constitution and the due process it describes (ironically, the Constitution describes a process for potentially abolishing its own rule of law), and knowingly so, with evidence showing you were acting in contempt to the whole concept of the nation while assisting foreign entities… Then that's grounds for treason.
