Hey clockfags, havn't been here in a long time but I think I noticed a key piece of info. You need to "Orient the map".
That clock graphic (from previous bread) represents a Compass Rose skewed 3* west (or more literally 3 Minutes West). Maps need to be oriented re: True North, Compass North and Grid North to set the correct azimuth.
Ex: Many Mil training maps were 3* (in my experience and locations) -amount is different for different regions.
Land Nav fags please chime in; not my expertise but this jumped out at me and years of forgotten training just spiked. The info regarding this is called "Magnetic Declination" because there is a difference between what we consider the physical geographic "North" of the planet and the Magnetic "North" of the planet which makes a big difference when navigating.
From what I recall once the deviation is known (ex: 3*) that amount is added to/subtracted from the azimuth you set when trying to navigate across land via compass and map. (The azimuth being the line you are plotting to travel in any particular direction).
