Jussie Smollett Lawyer: ‘We’re Weighing Our Options’ on Suing Chicago Police

Appearing Wednesday on ABC’s Good Morning America, Jussie Smollett attorney Tina Glandian told anchor George Stephanopoulos that the Empire star is mulling a lawsuit against the Chicago Police Department over their handling of his alleged hate hoax case.

On Tuesday, Cook County, Illinois prosecutors suddenly dropped all charges against Jussie Smollett after the Empire actor, who is alleged to have staged a racist and homophobic attack against himself, sacrificed his $10,000 bail. Smollett denies all wrongdoing and maintains he was attacked in downtown Chicago on January 29th.

TINA GLANDIAN: We’re weighing our options now. For Jussie, what’s important is he really just wants his career and his life back. Again, he did not ask for any of this. He was a victim of a crime. This has completely spiraled out of control and become a political event at this point, and his goal and focus right now is just getting his life back on track.

He’s not even started healing from the initial attack because he’s been dealing with everything what’s happened since then. I don’t know, I mean, we’re shocked at the mayor and the police superintendent doubling down yesterday when the prosecutor after a dispassion look at the evidence realized that it does not hold up and chose to voluntarily dismiss all counts and expunge his record. So at this point, we’re going to weigh our options and see how this develops.

Empire’ Star Taraji P. Henson: ‘Thank God the Truth Prevailed’ for Jussie Smollett

Actress Taraji P. Henson, the Empire co-star of Jussie Smollett, expressed relief about the decision to drop all charges against the actor Tuesday in an alleged hate crime against himself.

“I’m happy that the truth has finally been set free, because I knew it all along,” Henson said of prosecutors’ decision in an interview with USA Today. “We’re all happy for him, and thank God the truth prevailed.”

Henson, who plays Cookie Lyon, the mother to Smollett’s character Jamal Lyon, told the newspaper that she never doubted her co-star’s story due to his “immaculate track record.”

The men were brothers Abimbola “Abel” and Olabinjo “Ola” Osundairo, and one of them had worked on Empire. An attorney for them, Gloria Schmidt, has said the brothers agreed to help Smollett because of their friendship with him and the sense that he was helping their careers. They declined to comment

FOX TV ‘Gratified’ Felony Charges Dropped Against Jussie Smollett

In a statement Tuesday 20th Century Fox announced that it was “gratified” that Empire star Jussie Smollett had all 16 felony counts related to making a false police report dropped.

“Jussie Smollett has always maintained his innocence and we are gratified on his behalf that all charges against him have been dismissed,” 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement released after the case was dropped against the actor, according to Fox News.

For his part, Smollett was entirely unapologetic over the incident and insisted he has never lied about the attack that Chicago Police say he staged.
