The daughter of the founder of an upstate New York cult wants a separate trial from the group’s honchos, claiming her alleged crimes pale in comparison to those of the leader, Keith Raniere, and his sidekick, actress Allison Mack.
Lawyers for Lauren Salzman — kin of Nxivm’s co-founder Nancy Salzman — asked Brooklyn federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis on Wednesday to consider allowing Salzman her own trial, saying that Raniere and Mack had tarnished her reputation because of her alleged involvement with their secret group, known as DOS, which stands for “Dominant Over Submissive.”
Salzman may have been a member of DOS, but it was “only for a very brief period of time,” the filing says.
Prosecutors have described DOS as an invite-only master-slave group for women inside Nxivm, in which members agree to fully submit to their superiors.
Some of the women, who were branded with Raniere and Mack’s initials, were also allegedly forced to have sex with Raniere.
Salzman is named in the indictment as a “firstline DOS master,” but is only facing charges of forced labor conspiracy, wire fraud conspiracy, and racketeering for her role in the group. Raniere and Mack have been charged with sex trafficking and other counts.
Garaufis has yet to respond to the filing.
The trial is scheduled to begin March 18.
