All of my life I have heard this verse put forth as a litmus test. After growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus, I no longer see it that way. I believe He is saying that in the act of loving Him, we are given the strength to keep His commandments. If it meant anything other, then we could do it ourselves and Jesus would have died needlessly. Think about it.
