Abraham was obedient to God. That's the point of the story. God told him to be prepared to do the sacrifice. Abrahamm obeyed. Then God told him it was not necessary and Abraham should not follow through, so he didn't.
The story is very important inasmuch as it foreshadows the sacrifice made by Jesus Christ centuries later to atone for the sins of mankind.
God's command to Abraham to sacrifice his son was made in order to create this very foreshadowing, so that when Jesus was murdered on the cross, the Hebrew people would have had received fair warning that He was the Messiah come to atone for their sins, through their own scriptures.
God set this up in a very deliberate way.
