Turkish foreign minister: Defense deal with Russia 'done' despite US threats

Turkey’s foreign minister on Wednesday said that his country will “definitely” go through with buying a Russian air defense system despite U.S. moves to halt Ankara’s participation in the F-35 fighter jet program.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu also said “it’s not sure yet” whether the United States will withhold the F-35s, suggesting President Trump indicated to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that Ankara could still get the jets.

“S-400 deal is a done deal, and we will not step back from this,” Cavusoglu said during an event in Washington on Wednesday.

“Trump himself admitted on the phone that the U.S. made the mistake not to sell Patriots to Turkey, and he promised Erdogan that he will take care of this issue,” Cavusoglu said, adding that the phone call took place “recently.”

The comments from Cavusoglu, who is in Washington as part of NATO’s 70th anniversary celebration, are the first on the issue from a Turkish official since the Pentagon announced Monday it was suspending deliveries and activities related to Turkey’s participation in the F-35 program.

The Pentagon move was the latest effort to ramp up pressure on Turkey to abandon its deal with Moscow to buy an S-400 long-range air defense system.

A day after the Pentagon's announcement, acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan expressed confidence Turkey would change its mind about the S-400 and ultimately receive the F-35s.

The Trump administration has been trying to convince Turkey to buy the U.S.-made Patriot anti-missile system instead, offering Ankara a discount.

U.S. officials are worried about the F-35, the United States’ most advanced aircraft, operating in close proximity with the S-400 and allowing the Russians to gather information about U.S. capabilities.

The United States and other NATO allies have also warned the S-400 system will not work with NATO defense systems.

Cavusoglu dismissed those concerns Wednesday, saying that the S-400 “doesn’t have to be integrated into the NATO system” because “it’s for our own use” and that Turkey has proposed to the United States a “technical working group to make sure that this system will not be a threat” to the F-35 or other NATO systems.

Cavusoglu blamed Turkey’s decision to buy the S-400 on the Obama administration not selling Ankara the Patriot system. But he also said the Trump administration’s offer fell short of a guarantee that Turkey would get the Patriot.

Cavusoglu also highlighted that parts of the F-35 are built in Turkey, saying Turkey has “fulfilled all obligations.”

“We are a part of this program, so it shouldn’t be that simple,” he said.

The Pentagon’s announcement Monday said the department is looking for alternatives for the Turkish-made parts.

Trump administration puts squeeze on Planned Parenthood with Title X abortion reforms

Republicans have a long way to go in their bid to defund Planned Parenthood, but the Trump administration has leveraged a federal family-planning grant program to put the squeeze on the reproductive health care and abortion giant.

The Department of Health and Human Services trimmed its funding to Planned Parenthood Federation of America affiliates last week in its 2019 Title X grants, redirecting millions in grants to other health-care organizations, including for the first time the Obria Group, a pro-life pregnancy center based in Southern California.

Planned Parenthood affiliates were awarded $48.4 million over three years — a reduction of about $7 million from the previous round of multiyear grant awards — and four were zeroed out entirely, replaced by grants to state health departments in Hawaii, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin and Virginia.

That drop represents little more than a rounding error for PPFA, which reported $2.2 billion in revenues in its 2017-18 annual report, including $564 million in federal funding, but for pro-life advocates, the haircut sent the message that women seeking health care have plenty of choices.

“What it really does is it shows that Planned Parenthood can be defunded,” said Kristi Hamrick, spokeswoman for Students for Life of America. “It also shows that it’s a farce when the abortion lobby says that then women won’t receive health care. Lots of people don’t use Planned Parenthood.”

Planned Parenthood denounced the drop in its grant awards, arguing that stripping funding to its affiliates “puts health care at risk for more than 40,000 patients who rely on Planned Parenthood Title X health centers in 5 states.”

NCGOP Executive Director Dallas Woodhouse confirmed to WBTV last year that the state Republican Party had made a $240,000 payment to Causey’s campaign but said that the donation was legal. The $240,000 was a portion of a donation to the state party that was made by Lindbergh.

The four men under indictment are charged with conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud and bribery concerning programs receiving federal funds and aiding and abetting. Hayes is also charged with three counts of making false statements to the FBI.

The North Carolina GOP has been saddled with accusations of voter fraud relating to the 2018 election of Mark Harris. The evidence of fraudulent absentee ballots was so overwhelming that the state board of elections has called for a new election.

SEATTLE/PARIS/ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Boeing anti-stall software forced down the nose of a doomed Ethiopian jet even after pilots had turned it off, sources told Reuters on Wednesday, as investigators scrutinize the role played by technology and crew in the fatal March 10 crash.

A preliminary Ethiopian report into the disaster is due to be published within days and may include evidence the software system kicked in as many as four times before the 737 MAX dived into the ground, two people with knowledge of the matter said.

A third person familiar with the findings confirmed the software had fired up again after pilots had initially switched it off, but said there was only one significant episode in which the plane pointed itself lower in the moments before the crash.

The software known as MCAS is at the center of accident probes in both the crash of Ethiopian flight 302 and a Lion Air accident in Indonesia five months earlier that together killed 346 people.

It was not immediately clear whether the Ethiopian crew chose to re-deploy the system, which pushes the Boeing 737 MAX downwards to avoid stalling. But one of the sources said investigators were studying the possibility that the software started working again without human intervention.

A Boeing spokeswoman declined to comment. Ethiopian investigators were not available for comment.

The Ethiopian crash led to a global grounding of 737 MAX jets and scrutiny of its certification process. Initial results of the accident investigation are due within days.

The stakes are high. The 737 MAX is Boeing's top-selling jet with almost 5,000 on order. Ethiopian Airlines is also in the midst of an expansion drive, while other 737 MAX customers and victims' families want answers, and potentially compensation.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

Getting the planes flying again depends partly on the role that Boeing design features are found to have played in the crash, though investigators are also paying attention to airline operations, crew actions and regulatory measures.

Boeing is upgrading the MCAS software and training while stressing that existing cockpit procedures enable safe flight.

People familiar with the investigation have already said the anti-stall software was activated by erroneous 'angle of attack' data from a key aircraft sensor.

Now, the investigation has turned toward how MCAS was initially disabled by pilots, but then appeared to resume sending automated instructions to point downwards before the jet plunged to the ground, the two sources said.

Boeing issued guidelines to pilots on how to disable the anti-stall system after the Indonesian crash, reminding pilots to use cut-out switches in the console to shut off the system in the event of problems.

Cockpit procedures call for pilots to leave the MCAS system off for the rest of the flight once it has been disengaged.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that the pilots had initially followed Boeing's emergency procedures but later deviated from them as they tried to regain control of the plane.

Disabling the system does not shut down MCAS completely but severs an electrical link between the software's attempts to give orders to push the plane lower and the actual controls, a person familiar with the aircraft system said.

Investigators are studying whether there are any conditions under which MCAS could re-activate itself automatically, without the pilots intentionally reversing the cut-out maneuver.

Safety experts stress the investigation is far from complete and most aviation disasters are caused by a unique combination of human and technical factors.

None of the parties involved in the investigation was available for comment.

Three days after the 2016 US election, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki and her staff convened for their weekly meeting, where one employee "fretted aloud about the site's election-related videos that were watched the most," as they were "dominated by publishers like Breitbart News and Infowars, which were known for outrage and provocation."

Obviously providing a watering hole for conservatives - which Bloomberg and Google can't help but associate with 'toxic' content - is highly profitable. On social media platform Reddit, pro-Trump forum "The_Donald" is roughly the 264th largest "subreddit" by size, while ranked #3 in terms of user activity on the site, according to "redditlist."

YouTube, meanwhile, has been trying to figure out how to properly pay content "creators" who were growing frustrated over the pay structure. To meet the challenge, the company would pitch an overhaul of their entire business model which would revolve around "engagement" - how many people watched a video, and for how long. They called it "Project Bean."

Wojcicki and her lieutenants drew up a plan. YouTube called it Project Bean or, at times, “Boil The Ocean,” to indicate the enormity of the task. (Sometimes they called it BTO3 – a third dramatic overhaul for YouTube, after initiatives to boost mobile viewing and subscriptions.) The plan was to rewrite YouTube’s entire business model, according to three former senior staffers who worked on it.

It centered on a way to pay creators that isn’t based on the ads their videos hosted. Instead, YouTube would pay on engagement—how many viewers watched a video and how long they watched. A special algorithm would pool incoming cash, then divvy it out to creators, even if no ads ran on their videos. The idea was to reward video stars shorted by the system, such as those making sex education and music videos, which marquee advertisers found too risqué to endorse. -Bloomberg

House panel votes to authorize subpoena for unredacted Mueller report

The House Judiciary Committee voted Wednesday to authorize a subpoena for an unredacted copy of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia report, along with all of the evidence from the two-year investigation.

The vote on the resolution passed the Democrat-led panel on a 24-17 party line vote following an occasionally heated markup hearing Wednesday morning.

It marked the strongest push yet on Capitol Hill to obtain the long-awaited report on the special counsel's probe of Russian election interference in the 2016 presidential election, as well as possible Trump-campaign collusion and obstruction of justice.

It also sets up a fight between congressional Democrats and President Donald Trump, whose attorney general, William Barr, has committed to redacting some parts of the nearly 400-page report.

"We are dealing now, not with the president's private affairs, but with a sustained attack on the integrity of the republic by the president and his closest advisors," Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., said in an opening statement at the hearing.

"This committee requires the full report and the underlying materials because it is our job, not the attorney general's, to determine whether or not President Trump has abused his office."

The resolution authorized Nadler to issue subpoenas for documents and testimony from five former Trump associates: White House counsel Don McGahn, top strategist Steve Bannon, communications director Hope Hicks, chief of staff Reince Priebus and White House counsel Ann Donaldson.

Some Republicans have accused Democrats of attempting to compel Barr to act in violation of federal rules.

"The subpoena for the Mueller report and its underlying evidence commands the attorney general to do the unthinkable — break the law," ranking member Doug Collins, R-Ga., said at the hearing.

House committee leaders, including Nadler, Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings, D-Md., demanded that Barr hand over the "full and complete" report by Tuesday. Barr had told lawmakers that he expects a version of the report — with redactions — could be delivered by mid-April.

Those potentially blacked-out sections of the report include grand jury-related information, as well as information that could reveal U.S. sources and methods or confidential details about ongoing investigations, Barr wrote, citing the federal rules of procedure.

Democrats have pointed to past federal probes involving special investigators, such as those surrounding the Watergate and Monica Lewinsky scandals, in which grand jury information was released to Congress to bolster their request for the uncensored report.

"There is ample precedent and precedent for releasing all this information of all these categories to Congress, and that's what we're asking," Nadler said in an interview Tuesday.

Collins pushed back at the hearing, accusing Democrats of "desperately searching for something on the president."

"The attorney general's entire mandate is to enforce the law, and he's expressly forbidden from providing grand jury material outside of the department, with very limited and narrow exceptions," the ranking Republican said.

"Congress is not one of those exceptions, and the chairman knows it."

Barr, in a letter to members of Congress on Friday, sought to assure lawmakers that the White House had no plans to exert executive privilege to review the report before it was shared with other parties or the public.

Members of both parties have called for the report to be publicly released since it was delivered under wraps by the special counsel on March 22.

Democrats have signaled their growing dissatisfaction with Barr's decision to provide a four-page summary of the lengthy report's principal conclusions less than two days after receiving it.

Trump and his supporters, however, cheered that summary, in which Barr said that Mueller did not find sufficient evidence to merit a charge of obstruction of justice against the president. Barr also said that the special counsel did not establish collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

In order for capitalism to work, there has to be someone making more money than someone else based on the sense that they took the risk for a venture to succeed, while employing people for a fraction of the cost of the service provided. The problem is, admitting this gets you labeled a socialist. Taking risks and accepting responsibility deserve a higher wage, sure, but who is the judge of what's amicable in that regard?

For the workers, they can take their services elsewhere, but the ebb and flow of labor forces vs management is what got us into debates like NAFTA to begin with. UPS is a prime example. UPS management wanted a way to organize their labor. Laborers wanted more share of the pie for their services. Unions were invited in to create the balance. UPS, to cut cost, forced everyone into part time positions to avoid benefits. Unions fought harder to gain benefits for part timers. UPS, as a company, found themselves in a more difficult position to become profitable, so the standard practice was to fire anyone before they hit their 2nd/3rd month of employment. Unions started drafting people way sooner, and then, cheap labor started flooding the scene. You basically cannot get ad-hoc work on trucking docks anymore (as an individual from a particular background) because that market is over saturated with cheap labor.

Used to be, a 17 or 18 year old guy from shitsville, wherever could show up at the docks, offer labor to help, and the truckers would pay cash money. Now? It's extremely organized by labor groups utilizing the services of millions of "immigrants"; forcing the homegrown to go elsewhere and demand 15 per hour to flip burgers.

Socialism is a failure. Capitalism pits the most competitive at the top no matter how you slice and dice it. Any attempts at an equitable middle ground are just varying degrees of socialism sprinkled into capitalism. This empty suit socialist is not going to solve this debate with empty suit capitalists. Not because they don't care or somewhat understand the issues inherent in both systems, but because the people wanting better wages for the workers absolutely refuse to acknowledge where the real source of the problem lies, while trying to maintain a constituency of actual Americans. Former FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday condemned President Donald Trump’s calls for a possible investigation into how special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia inquiry started, adding that it creates a troubling precedent.

Panama Papers investigation helps recover more than $1.2 billion around the world

First-time gains in Panama, France and Iceland have pushed above $1.16 billion the global tally of fines and back taxes resulting from the Panama Papers investigation’s exposure of the offshore finance industry.

On the third anniversary of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists-led investigation, which included the Miami Herald and McClatchy’s Washington Bureau, the fallout from it is gathering pace through hundreds of separate investigations into undisclosed wealth across scores of nations.

Since June 2018, the United Kingdom alone has added $119 million, to bring its total to more than $252 million; Australia has collected another $43 million to eclipse $92 million; and Belgium has added an extra $6.5 million to its government coffers to surpass $18 million. French tax authorities have confirmed nearly $136 million has now been recovered — and that figure is expected to rise. They have carried out more than 500 inspections since April 2016.

Canada’s Revenue Agency, which also raided two properties last week in connection to the investigation, has revealed it had recouped nearly $6.8 million in federal taxes and fines from 66 audits. The agency said it planned to audit about 234 more taxpayers linked to the probe. Fewer than 10 criminal investigations are ongoing.

“The audit work will take several years to complete as many taxpayers are using litigation to obstruct CRA audits,” the CRA told ICIJ’s Canadian partner, the Toronto Star.

In Iceland, the Directorate of Tax Investigations has finished 24 investigations relating to the Panama Papers and estimates it has recouped $25.5 million. Icelanders took to the streets after the 2016 investigation was released, and the former prime minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson resigned just days after the first stories were published.

The files, which were leaked to Süddeutsche Zeitung, came from a little-known but powerful law firm based in Panama, Mossack Fonseca, that had branches in Hong Kong, Miami, Zurich and more than 35 other places around the globe.

Some scientists are concerned that the standard for allowable fluoride in bottled water is still too high with this new proposed change, as excess fluoride's consequences can extend beyond dental issues.

"Given that fluoride can damage brain development, I would recommend that the maximum fluoride concentration in bottled water be kept at a lower level than 0.7 mg/L," Dr. Philippe Grandjean, an adjunct professor of environmental health at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health
