Nah, it's legit. The building is an ancient Studebaker dealership. Building has been under continuous renovation for years. NG filled the cafe and most of the offices upstairs as they were evacuating. They had time enough to put a sign on the door and get out. A moment later, boom. Been in contact with eyewitnesses and checking with sources. Worked in an adjacent building at one point, intimately familiar with the layout. Pure accidental human stupidity. Should never have been approved for NG equipment in the first place due to structural issues and age.

  1. Because PSNC hires private contractors for almost all of their work. FD is called in as a precaution in these cases (Sauce: PSNC worker)

  1. The gas wasn't leaking into the open air, it had seeped into the store and pooled in the ceiling and upstairs in the offices. Already evacuated because of the smell before the boom. (Source: DFD fireman).

  1. The explosion and subsequent fire were from the pooled NG inside the building.

Look, I was excited that this was spoopy and spent all day investigating. I used to work in the area, have friends who still do. But the more I talked to people who were there and witnessed, the more I saw that it was legit. Disappointing, and sad that the owner of the cafe died (went back inside to wait for FD after putting up sign) but it wasn't spoopy. Just typical Durham sloppiness and bad luck. I can't speak for other explosions, but this appears to have been accidental, in my estimation. If it had been spoopy, certain other (Duke) agencies (University) would have been involved.
