Former Obama White House counsel Greg Craig expects to be indicted in the coming days on charges stemming from work he performed for Ukraine in 2012, Mr. Craig’s legal team said.

Mr. Craig has refused to accept a plea deal, and the matter could be presented to a grand jury for indictment as soon as Thursday, people familiar with the matter say. A spokesman for the Justice Department declined to comment.

Tusk: UK Can Reconsider Strategy, Revoke Art. 50 Until End of Brexit Extension

European Council President Donald Tusk urged the United Kingdom on Thursday not to waste the extra time to sort out Brexit after the EU agreed on a second delay to London's departure until 31 October.

"Please don't waste this time", Tusk said at a news conference after eight hours of EU leaders' talks. Tusk stressed that the UK still had all the options on Brexit available during the extension, from approving the stalled divorce deal, to changing its leave strategy to canceling the departure altogether.

Heads of 27 EU members states and the United Kingdom have agreed upon a flexible extension of the Brexit deadline until 31 October, giving London additional six months to figure out the best possible way out of the withdrawal deadlock, the European Council President, Donald Tusk, said on Thursday.

At the same news conference, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said that a no-deal Brexit would be a total disaster, adding that we will do all we can to avoid such a scenario.

According to the Brexit summit conclusion, if the UK fails to Ratify withdrawal deal by 22 May it must hold the European Parliament election or leave the EU on 1 June.

The UK parliament has repeatedly rejected the withdrawal agreement, coordinated between London and Brussels, and the country therefore risked tumbling out of the bloc without a deal, which could affect both the UK and EU economies.

The UK government and Brussels reached a divorce deal late last year, but the UK parliament has refused to back the agreement and cannot agree on any alternative measures. The country was supposed to leave the bloc on 29 March but missed the deadline.

The issue of Northern Ireland remains a thorny one in the Brexit process. The main challenge for London is to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland while, at the same time, securing the nation’s integrity.

Aides to US President expect him to release his Israel-PA peace plan once Netanyahu forms a government coalition.

Aides to US President Donald Trump expect the president to release his peace plan for Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) once Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu forms a coalition, Reuters reported on Wednesday, a day after Netanyahu’s election victory.

Officials said that despite criticism of the administration’s moves to date, the plan will demand compromises from both sides.

The contents of the Middle East peace plan, authored by President Donald Trump’s advisers Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt, have remained a secret thus far.

Kushner and Greenblatt have limited the plan’s distribution over the two years they have been crafting it. It has been kept secret “to ensure people approach it with an open mind” when it is released, a senior administration official told Reuters.

Only four people have regular access - Kushner, Greenblatt, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and Kushner aide Avi Berkowitz, the official said.

Trump is briefed regularly on the contents but is not believed to have read the entire document of dozens of pages.

“He is briefed if something interesting is happening or there is an idea they want to run by him,” the official told Reuters.

While the plan has not yet been made public, Kushner recently discussed it in an interview with Sky News in Arabic.

While Kushner did not get into many specifics, he did say the plan “is very detailed and will focus on delineating the border and providing solutions to the main issues that are controversial and will be appropriate for the current situation on the ground.”

According to Reuters, the proposal also addresses such core political issues as the status of Jerusalem, and separately aims at helping the Palestinian Arabs strengthen their economy.

Cloaked in secrecy is whether the plan will propose outright the creation of a Palestinian state.

On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the plan would be presented before too long but, when asked, declined to say whether the administration favored a two-state solution.

On Tuesday, when asked about the two-state by a Senate subcommittee, Pompeo would only say, "Ultimately the Israelis and Palestinians will decide how to resolve this.”

The PA, meanwhile, has been boycotting the US ever since Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December of 2017 and has rejected the US peace plan before it has even been unveiled.

Pompeo: US ready to prolong New START with Russia, 'if we can get the deal right'

Washington will agree to prolonging the Russian-US treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (New START), if the two sides make a deal that suits both sides, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said on Wednesday.

"There is large compliance with the new START. On both sides there are some arguments on edges, but largely the Russians and the United States have been compliant. We are at the very beginning of conversations of renewing that. If we can get the deal right, if we can make sure it fits 2021 and beyond, President Trump has made very clear that if we can get a good solid arms control agreement, we ought to get one," Pompeo said during hearings at the US Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee.

Former Obama aide expected to be charged soon: reports

Former Obama White House counsel Gregory Craig expects to face federal charges in connection to his 2012 work for Ukraine, according to the Washington Post.

The expected charges relate to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation and illegal lobbying done by former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort for the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice, according to the Post. Manafort pleaded guilty to charges relating to his work for Ukraine last year.

Craig’s attorneys have called the expected charges a “misguided abuse of prosecutorial discretion.”

“This case was thoroughly investigated by the [Southern District of New York] and that office decided not to pursue charges against Mr. Craig. We expect an indictment by the DC US Attorney’s Office at the request of the National Security Division,” Craig’s lawyers said in a statement, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The probe into Craig’s activity in Ukraine was transferred to the Southern District of New York from Mueller’s office and then back to the Justice Department, according to the WSJ.

The expected charges relate to the Ukrainian government hiring him and his then-law firm to evaluate the former Ukrainian prime minister’s corruption trial.

The firm, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, paid the Justice Department a $4.6 million settlement in January and admitted to misleading the government about whether it acted as a foreign agent during its Ukraine work, blaming Craig for the misleading information, according to the WSJ.

Investigators identified an allegedly false statement in a series of letters back and forth between Craig and the Justice Department about the timing of his contact with reporters, according to the newspaper, citing people familiar with the matter.

Prosecutors also reportedly believe Craig concealed a public relations firm’s involvement from the Justice Department, according to the WSJ.

Craig joined Skadden in 2010, after serving as White House counsel under Obama. He also worked at the State Department and as special counsel to the president in the '90s under former President Bill Clinton.

He would be the first prominent Democrat charged as a result of Mueller's investigation, according to the Post.

The White House and Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.

Italy’s Deputy Premier, Interior Minister and League leader Matteo Salvini called for Turkey’s application to join the EU to be definitively rejected as he met with the heads of other European right-wing parties in Milan.

Republican Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie and former Secretary of State John Kerry squared off on Twitter on Wednesday after Massie criticized Kerry’s testimony in a climate change hearing. During the House Oversight Committee hearing, which took place Tuesday, Kerry appeared as an expert witness and took questions on the national security threat posed by climate change.

After a heated exchange, Massie took to Twitter to vent his frustrations. “Have you noticed that the scientists who feel most qualified to weigh in on climate science are political scientists?” he tweeted on Wednesday morning. Kerry responded by sharing a tweet from Rolling Stone that mocked Massie, along with his own comment, “It’s almost as if someone said ‘Congress has hit rock bottom’ and Massie replies with ‘hold my beer.'”

Massie fired right back. “It’s almost as if someone said ‘No one has less knowledge of science, a higher opinion of himself, and a bigger carbon footprint than Al Gore’ and Kerry replies ‘hold my champagne, I’m going to testify as a climate change expert,'” Massie tweeted.

MIGRANTS INVESTIGATED OVER BOMBING OF POPULIST SALVINI PARTY OFFICE

A PAIR OF MOROCCAN MIGRANTS IN ITALY ARE UNDER INVESTIGATION IN CONNECTION WITH THE BOMBING OF AN OFFICE OF POPULIST INTERIOR MINISTER MATTEO SALVINI’S LEAGUE PARTY.

The attack occurred in January and saw the front door of the League office in San Valentino Torio damaged following an explosive blast that was downplayed by left-wing politicians as “Christmas fireworks,” Il Giornale reports.

Prosecutors say that the two main suspects in the attack are 41-year-old Abderrahim S. and 37-year-old Moktar J. who are being investigated under suspicion of detonating explosives. The pair were identified with the help of CCTV footage.

Mariano Falcone, regional deputy coordinator for the League in Salerno, said that while the damage to the building was not extensive, “It is an attack against Matteo Salvini and against the League” and called the attack “disturbing.”

“We must not let our guard down,” Falcone said and warned of new groups behaving like the far-left terrorists who committed acts of violence in Italy in the 1970s.

One such far-left terrorist, Cesare Battisti, recently admitted to murdering several people during that era after being deported from Brazil by populist president Jair Bolsonaro

The incident is not the first time Salvini’s party offices have been attacked with explosives. In August last year, an office in Treviso was attacked with far-left Antifa anarchists later taking responsibility for the bombing online.

The attack consisted of two separate explosive devices, one meant to attract police and others to the area where a second one, filled with nails and metal fragments, would then go off. Police were able to disarm the second device before it exploded.

While it is mostly far-left groups behind attacks or calls for attacks on Salvini, the Salerno case is different in that the suspects appear to be migrants.

It also comes after another migrant, 47-year-old Senegalese national Ousseynou Sy, attempted to set a bus full of children on fire, citing revenge against Salvini and his anti-mass migration policies.

Recently, the Russian Defense Ministry warned that European intelligence agents were inside Idlib, and planning a chemical attack, which would be blamed on the Syrian and/or Russian military. The professional video troupe, The White Helmets, is also present ready to begin their upcoming role in the drama. French and Belgian agents inside Idlib were observed by informants in their midst, though the French Foreign Ministry accused Russia of lying.

When the battle to free East Aleppo was over in December 2016, the civilians came streaming out, and the next task was to interview them to determine who was an innocent civilian, and who had actually been a terrorist, but had not managed to escape. Under-cover informants were able to identify the innocent from the terrorists. Time and time again, from battle to battle, valuable information was leaked to the SAA through their vast network of informants on the ground, behind enemy lines, among the terrorist groups they were fighting.

Ever since the war began in 2011, chemical weapons use, or merely the threat, has played a role. Syrians watched videos made in 2012 by terrorists in which rabbits were killed with chemicals, in an effort to scare the civilian population, and it worked. People were scared, and the fear was coming from the Turkish border, as the chemicals in the video were clearly made in Turkey. In March 2013, Khan al Assal was attacked by chemical weapons. The dead were 25 civilians and 16 SAA soldiers guarding the town after a previous terrorist attack.

The live TV coverage of the hospital with the gasping victims, and the dead in a local hospital shocked Syrians nationwide, while the Syrian deputy foreign minister, Faisal Meqdad, said Syria would file a protest with the U.N. Security Council, which was followed up by requests by the Syrian government for UN investigators to come and inspect the crime scene and victims. The UN repeatedly stalled citing security concerns, finally in August 2013 the team arrived in Damascus, but before they could begin a new chemical attack happened, and the video caused outrage around the world, as viewers were convinced the Syrian government had used sarin gas on hundreds of civilians.

There were skeptics, who wondered why the Syrian government would repeatedly plead for UN investigators to come and see Khan al Assal, and just as the UN arrives after months of delay, the same government would use chemicals right under the noses of the UN inspectors? In the science of criminal investigation, the first question the UN investigators must ask is: “Who will benefit from this crime?” Obviously, the crime benefitted the terrorists. They had made a priceless video, uploaded to the internet, and made available free of charge globally. News media from the four corners of the world were showing it repeatedly. By watching it over and over, the audience was convinced they knew the culprit, though no evidence was ever supplied. Even US Secretary of State John Kerry, without any fact based evidence cited, said it was evident from the video that Syria was to blame.

Snap judgments based on amateur videos became routine in Syria. Yahya Ababneh was on the ground in Damascus just days after the event, and interviewed armed men fighting the Syrian military. Named eye witnesses told about chemicals coming in from a Saudi Arabian, but without proper instructions on how to deal with, or use them. Jibhat al Nusra, the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda, tasked their allies in the Free Syrian Army in the handling and use of the chemicals, which resulted in deaths of terrorists as well as civilians.

A QAnon conspiracy theorist is trying to scoop up a seat in Congress on a pro-hooker and pro-cocaine platform.

Republican bookseller Matthew Lusk is currently running unopposed in the GOP primary before facing Democrat Congressman Al Lawson in Florida’s 5th congressional district.

“Q is one of my issues because it’s definitely a leak from high places,” Lusk told state politics blog Florida Politics on Monday. “I follow Q, but I don’t know who or what Q is,”

The QAnon movement believes that a deep state of Hollywood celebrities and Democrats is working to undermine President Trump and is running an international pedophile ring, but Lusk insists he isn’t a “brainwashed cult member.”

On his website Lusk2020, the Macclenny man advocates for the legalization of prostitution — “hookers have hearts too” — and taking marijuana and hard narcotics “off the federal climes list.”

PARIS - French and Malian troops killed or captured more than 30 extremists and dismantled a jihadist training camp during a major counter-terrorism operation near Mali’s border with Burkina Faso, the French military told AFP on Friday.

Nearly 60 Arrested In Undercover Child-Sex Sting During Final Four

Minnesota authorities conducted an undercover child-sex sting during the NCAA Final Four tournament last weekend that resulted in a total of 58 people being arrested, according to state authorities on Wednesday. The undercover operation, run by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) in several Twin Cities communities, arrested 47 people for probable cause of felony solicitation of a minor and 11 people for probable cause of sex trafficking and promotion of prostitution. Eight of those arrested were from out-of-state and 28 victims, including one minor, were rescued from trafficking situations, according to BCA Superintendent Drew Evans.

Undercover agents and investigators posed as minors or sex buyers via social media and were chatted by potential suspects. After meeting at an arraigned place with the agents, the suspects were arrested. Personnel from 33 criminal justice agencies, such as investigators from St. Paul, Minneapolis and Buffalo police departments, were part of the BCA-led operation. “It really illustrates that when law enforcement works collaboratively we can work to drive down this type of crime, and that Minnesota does not tolerate trafficking in the state,” said Evans. “The results of the Final Four human trafficking operation remind us that we must continue to identify and aid the victims, arrest and prosecute the offenders, and continue to educate the public on ways to assist law enforcement in the prevention of human trafficking,” said Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts.

The Final Four tournament was held from April 4-8 in U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis and is another indication of the ongoing epidemic of human trafficking before big events. In the 2018 Super Bowl, which was also held at U.S. Bank Stadium, Minnesota authorities made more than 110 arrests in the days prior to the game. Predicting a similar increase of trafficking at this year’s Super Bowl, more than 600 Department of Homeland Security officials went to Atlanta to provide extra security. In the end, law enforcement officials apprehended 169 people between Jan. 23 and Feb. 2.

UN sanctions are good business for Chinese smugglers in North Korea.

group of Chinese merchants who are residents of North Korea are using their connections and border-crossing privileges to smuggle goods subject to U.N. sanctions from China into the North, sources in the border region say.

The sanctions, aimed at depriving North Korea of resources that could be channeled into its nuclear program, prohibit U.N. member nations from exporting certain goods into North Korea.

The illegal but lucrative trade in banned goods has enabled the merchants to amass small fortunes.

“Many of them are making money by smuggling goods prohibited by the Chinese government into North Korea across the river,” said a source from a Chinese city bordering North Korea in an interview with RFA’s Korean Service.

“[These] merchants are doing big business, able to smuggle 200,000 Chinese Yuan (about $30,000) worth of illegal goods into the North [with each shipment],” said the source.

The large-scale nature of their smuggling enterprise necessitates an effort that amounts to far more than an individual hiding a few pieces of contraband in their personal luggage. These operations require complex teamwork, according to the source.

One partner operating in China will deliver the goods across the river to the other partner in North Korea. Trust is paramount in these types of operations, so many work with family members.

“Most of them work in pairs, like a husband and wife or a father and son. They can also team up with other smugglers and send goods [to each other] across the river,” said the source.

The source described two popular routes for smugglers, explaining that the width of the river and the presence of border guards were a factor in determining the costs of their trade.

“It costs about 200 Chinese Yuan (about $30), on average, to transport 70 kilos from Changbai county, Jilin province to Hyesan city, through a [professional] smuggler. However, it costs double if they transport the package via Dandong and Sinuiju.” the source said, referring to towns and cities on the shared river border between China and North Korea.

“The river is much wider [between Dandong and Sinuiju] and they have to spend more to bribe the Chinese and North Korean border guards,” said the source.

The source said that under normal circumstances, the goods being smuggled would not be worth the bribes these smugglers must pay to get the goods across the river, but the sanctions have made the effort worthwhile.

Another source, an ethnic Korean living in China said the items being smuggled include “automobile parts, water pumps, diesel power generators and electric locks.”

“Items like these seem like they would be necessary for North Korean companies, high ranking officials or [otherwise] rich people,” the source said.

“[The smugglers] make more money when there are more things to smuggle so they actually welcome international sanctions on North Korea,” the source said.

“It actually works out because China and North Korea have a common interest in bringing sanctioned goods into North Korea,” the source said.

Smuggling has become more and more commonplace as North Korea transitions into a market economy. As people cannot live on what they are paid by the government, many must find alternative income sources. This has led to a very active black market enabled by bribery and corruption, often with government and military officials themselves leading the smuggling operations.

RFA reported in March that a commander of a North Korean border defense regiment was arrested for embezzling funds from a state-sanctioned car smuggling scheme. Sources in that story were surprised by the sudden crackdown on smugglers, given that the practice is rampant along the border with China.
