Ancenstry.com pulls ad amid online backlash

Ancestry.com apologized Thursday and took down a controversial ad that depicted an interracial couple discussing the possibility of fleeing to the north during the Civil War era after backlash online.

The ad, originally posted on the company's YouTube page earlier this month, depicted two "lovers" (according to the ad's title) running through the streets of a city in the 19th century American south, before stopping to discuss the possibility of heading north.

"Abigail," the white man in the ad says to his girlfriend, who is black. "We can escape to the North. There's a place we can be together, across the border."

"Will you leave with me?" he asks as the ad fades to black while showing the text, "without you, the story stops here."

Critics of the ad said that it whitewashed history, inaccurately portraying the rape of slaves by slaveowners instead as a consensual relationship between lovers.

"What the hell is this @Ancestry? Why do white people insist on romanticizing my Black female ancestors experiences with white men during slavery?" wrote Bishop Talbert Swan, a regional president of the NAACP.

"They were raped, abused, treated like animals, beaten, and murdered by white men. Stop with the revisions."

The company apologized "for any offense that the ad may have caused" in a statement Thursday to BuzzFeed News, and the ad could no longer be found on Ancestry's YouTube page.

"Ancestry is committed to telling important stories from history," the company said. "This ad was intended to represent one of those stories. We very much appreciate the feedback we have received and apologize for any offense that the ad may have caused."

The Population Of New York City Falls For Only The Second Time This Decade

The largest city in the United States is seeing its population decline for only the second time in the past ten years, according to federal estimates. International migration into New York City has slowed at the same time as more residents have departed, which has caused the city's population to decline in both 2017 and 2018, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The city's population fell 0.47% compared with 2017, to 8.4 million - a number that was at odds with estimates. Census officials had estimated that New York’s population grew by about 7,000 in 2017, but revised figures show that it fell by about 39,000. New York City’s Department of City Planning officials said that the city's population expansion of the last decade - one that saw residents in the five boroughs grow by 2.7% between 2010 to 2018 - has begun its "inevitable slowdown".

“You cannot maintain that level of growth forever,” city planing’s chief demographer Joseph Salvo commented.

Net migration, measured as the sum of all people moving in and out of the city, has also fallen. In 2011, that figure grew by about 14,300, a reversal of a decade long downward trend. That number started falling again in 2013 and fell by about 87,000 in 2018.

Disenchantment with city life wasn't exclusive just to New York City, where the results were most pronounced. Several other cities in the U.S. reported declines as well. For instance, the LA metro area fell by 0.1% and Chicago fell by 0.2%. Pittsburgh and Cleveland also showed nominal drops. LA county posted losses in 2018 due to international migration and more residents leaving.

The number of residents in LA county fell 0.1%, to 10.1 million. The county’s population was nearly unchanged in 2017.

The new data also shows that international migration into NYC grew slower than previous estimates. Census officials predicted that NYC added an annual average of 78,000 residents from abroad during the period between 2010 to 2017. The actually number turned out to be 54,000 annually.

City planning officials have contested this number, however. They claim that a change in how the census counts international migration could be causing this category to be undercounted. They also claim the number could be too low when taking into account the new housing units built over the past few years. Staten Island was the only borough that posted small gains. Queens had the largest drop in 2018, posting 18,000 fewer people.

Outside of New York City, the state is seeing a similar exodus, likely helped along by new SALT tax changes. Only two New York counties grew by more than 1,000 people, according to Bloomberg. They were Orange County, with 2,148 residents, faster than any other, and Saratoga, by 1,061.

Between April 1, 2010 and July 1, 2018, domestic migration helped see New York post 1.2 million fewer citizens despite foreign immigration and births outnumbering deaths both cushioning the number.

Over the past year that data was available - from July 1, 2017 to July 1, 2018 - the state's population decreased by 48,510.

A last salute to a Raider: Air Force bids farewell to Lt. Col. Dick Cole

The Air Force on Thursday bid farewell to one of its most storied airmen, Lt. Col. Richard “Dick” Cole, in a service that included tributes from his son, the service’s top leaders, and fly-overs of modern and vintage aircraft from World War II.

Cole, who died April 9 at the age of 103, was the last living link to the Doolittle Raiders — 80 U.S. Army Air Forces airmen who flew 16 modified B-25B Mitchell bombers off of an aircraft carrier to strike mainland Japan, a few months after Pearl Harbor. Their mission took place on April 18, 1942 — 77 years to the day before Cole’s memorial service was held.

Cole, then a second lieutenant, was the co-pilot to Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle, who planned and led the audacious, unprecedented raid. Though the mission caused only minor damage to its targets, it sent a message that America was ready to fight back, and buoyed spirits on the homefront.

During the service, which was held in Hangar 41 at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph in Texas, Cole’s son Rich spoke of his father’s quick wit and kind, humble nature.

“Dad would never have gone for this,” Rich Cole said with a chuckle. “But he can’t catch me, so we’re good to go.”

Cole was a loving father and husband, Rich said. He told a story about his brother Andy contracting spinal meningitis, which seared part of his brain. The doctors thought Andy would never walk or talk again and recommended the Cole family institutionalize him.

But Rich Cole said his father and mother brought Andy home, helped him learn to walk and talk again, and Andy lived with them for the rest of his life.

“Great men do great things,” Rich Cole said. “Good men do the right things. My father was a good man.”

Woman killed in ‘terror attack’ as petrol bombs and bullets fired at cops in Londonderry riot

A WOMAN has died in a "terrorist incident" after petrol bombs were hurled at cops and shots fired as violence erupted in Londonderry tonight.

The 29-year-old victim was shot dead during the deadly riot - with police now launching a murder probe.

Dissident Republicans are being blamed for the killing, the BBC reports.

A major security operation is in place in the Creggan area as bricks and bottles were fired at police and a hijacked van set alight.

Fireworks are also understood to have been lobbed at officers with armed cops now patrolling the streets.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said on Twitter: "Sadly I can confirm that following shots being fired tonight in Creggan, a 29 year old woman has been killed.

"We are treating this as a terrorist incident and we have launched a murder enquiry.”

They had earlier called for calm after the riot broke out.

Leona O'Neill, who was at the scene, said she called the ambulance for the tragic woman.

She tweeted: "I was standing beside this young woman when she fell beside a police Land Rover tonight in Creggan #Derry.

"I called an ambulance for her but police put her in the back of their vehicle and rushed her to hospital where she died. Just 29 years old. Sick to my stomach tonight."

Ulster Unionist Party leader Robin Swann said news of the death was "devastating", adding: "A precious life lost, we can't go back to this nor can we allow others to drag us back."

Dramatic pictures show the gutted remains of cars after masked thugs lobbed petrol bombs earlier tonight.

Crowds can be seen in the background watching as a vehicle goes up in flames.

Others show armed cops stood by the remains of burnt-out cars after tonight's violence.

Tensions have flared as Republicans prepare to mark the anniversary of the Easter Rising - the 1916 rebellion against British rule in Ireland.
