Phase Lines are a means of controlling an advance across a broad front. The initial phase line is the Line Of Departure. Everyone moves forward engaging targets/units as they go. Once they reach the next phase line, they report to higher headquarters who order the advance to continue, or a hold in place to let other friendly units to catch up. This allows maximum concentration of forces along the front and prevents faster moving units from being encircled and cut off from the main force.
