Nadler: 'No choice' but to move forward with Barr contempt vote

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday told CNN that the House panel has “no choice” but to vote to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress, shortly before the panel was slated to vote on the issue.

He accused the attorney general of using the Justice Department to protect the president, calling it "just another instance of lawlessness" by the Trump administration.

“Attorney General Barr has made the entire Justice Department an agency for enabling the president to defy the law, to defy and kind of accountability and to act as a monarch,” Nadler told CNN’s “New Day,” saying “we have no choice” but to proceed with the vote.

The Justice Department, Nadler said, “made it twice as necessary to proceed with this contempt, because you cannot have a government in which the president can conceal all information about his own wrongdoing and about anything else.”

Trump, Nadler added, “wants to make himself a king, and Congress cannot permit that, nor can the American people abide that.”

Nadler conceded that settling the matter in the court system “could take a while, but I have no doubt as to the outcome … this is not new law, this is well-established old law.”

He said the Justice Department, contrary to its claims, has made “no reasonable accommodations” to answer a committee subpoena calling for the release of an unredacted version of special counsel Robert Mueller's report.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said this morning that she thought that Barr should be held in contempt of Congress in relation to his failure to the unredacted report and raised the prospect of impeaching Barr if necessary.

The Justice Department threatened Tuesday evening to invoke executive privilege to restrict Congress’ access to the redacted portions of Mueller’s findings.

White House to William Barr: Prepare for War over Mueller Report

WASHINGTON, DC – White House Special Counsel Emmet Flood sent a letter to Attorney General William Barr making clear that President Donald Trump is retaining his legal privileges as partisan Democrats escalate their conflict against the president over the Mueller Report.

Theresa May Faces Tory Ultimatum: Pick Your Resignation Date Or We Will

I was disappointed the 1922 Tory Leadership Committee refused to give May the boot last month.

Under party rules, a leadership challenge can only happen once in 365 days. May survived a challenge in December.

Months ago I proposed a rules change. The leadership committee met to discuss that action, but came to the wrong conclusion.

On April 22, I noted Tories Reject Rules Change But Ask May to Clarify When She Will Stand Down

80% of Tories Want May Out

The Independent reported 80% of Conservative supporters want Theresa May to stand down before next general election, survey finds.

Despite that unprecedented sentiment, May still hangs on. However, the 1922 committee is reconsidering after devastating local elections were Tories were clobbered. Even Labour lost seats, but only a handful.

The message is "deliver Brexit".

EU Parliament Elections

The Guardian Live Blog reports today that Theresa May and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn failed to reach agreement in time to stop European Parliament elections.

Theresa May “deeply regrets” that Britain will have to take part in European elections on 23 May, and is pinning her hopes on completing the Brexit process in time to avoid MEPs having to take their seats.

New Brexit Target Date

Theresa May now targets July 1 as the New Brexit Date for Britain Leaving the EU.

May originally said Britain would leave on March 29, then April 12, and then May 22 - the eve of the European elections.

Although the elections will be held, May now hopes, as does the EU that the MPs will not take their seats when the new parliament meets in July.

Otherwise, Nigel Farage's Brexit Party plans to make a mess of things.

1922 Committee Meets Again

Earlier today, the 1922 Committee of backbench MPs, led by Sir Graham Brady, met to discuss May's future.

A source would not comment on the meeting, though it was understood to have included discussions on setting a detailed timetable for when May would step down as Conservative leader.

CNN Headline Asks: “How Black Will the Royal Baby Be?”

Analyst decries fact that some see mixed-race child as sign of racial progress.

Yes, really.

It was announced yesterday that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had had their first baby. Markle has a black mother and is mixed race.

“The most trusted name in news,” which may about to be hit with huge layoffs, ran a sub-headline bizarrely ruminating on how black the baby would be.

John Blake’s “analysis” lamented the fact that some are calling the baby the “Great Mixed-Race Hope”.

He also decried those who are celebrating Markle being “elevated to a position of prominence” as a sign of racial progress (because if we actually eliminate racism, grievance peddlers like Blake will be out of a job).

The article went on to blame “commentators who are reinforcing these stereotypes are totally unaware of the damage.”

APPEALS COURT RULES TRUMP CAN SEND ASYLUM SEEKERS TO MEXICO

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that President Donald Trump has the authority to send asylum seekers to Mexico as they wait for the United States to adjudicate their claims, handing the president a big win on immigration policy.

The “Remain in Mexico” policy seeks to curb catch-and-release by denying fraudulent asylum seekers the incentive of being released into the interior of the U.S. while their cases proceed in immigration courts.

The circuit court overruled an earlier decision by San Francisco Judge Richard Seeborg, who blocked Trump’s policy on the grounds that the administration was making the asylum process too difficult and could be putting migrants at further risk by demanding they stay in Mexico. (RELATED: Judge Blocks Trump Administration Policy Of Returning Asylum Seekers To Mexico)

The Ninth Circuit temporarily issued a stay in mid-April while they reviewed the case, allowing the Trump administration to continue the policy until further notice.

Now, the president can at least temporarily declare victory on “Remain in Mexico.”

The lower court still has to rule on the merits of the case, which could end up at the Supreme Court.

The Washington Post obtained documents and emails from the White House on Tuesday that ordered asylum officers to be tougher with applicants, flagging inconsistencies in their claims about having credible fear in their home countries. President Trump has repeatedly accused some asylum seekers of being “coached” through their initial interviews with asylum officers and has made a concerted effort to eliminate fraud from the system.

Attorney General Bill Barr further advanced the administration’s crackdown on asylum seekers by deciding in April that such immigrants are not eligible to be released on bond. They therefore can be detained indefinitely during the adjudication process unless the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) deems them eligible for parole for other reasons.
