Ex-Nauru president Sprent Dabwido who oversaw detention centre reopening dies

Former Nauruan president Sprent Dabwido has died in Australia, where was being treated for cancer.

Mr Dabwido was instrumental in overseeing the reopening of Nauru's detention facilities while president in 2012, before he lost power in 2014.

His death at the age of 46 comes after a battle with nasopharyngeal cancer, which he was diagnosed with in April 2018.

In a statement released today confirming his death, fellow Nauru 19 member and politician Mathew Batsiua expressed his sadness at the news of the death.

"I can say Sprent died the way he lived," he said.

"He was brave, outspoken and always kept his sense of humour, even in the worst times. He also died happy, surrounded by people who loved him.

Mr Dabwido fled to Australia earlier this year and begged the Australian Government for political asylum as he sought medical treatment which he insists his own government has gone out of its way to deny him.

Prior to his death, he was fighting a legal battle in Nauru which was before the court of appeal in the long-running Nauru 19 case.

Mr Batsiua accused the current Nauruan Government of contributing to Mr Dabwido's death.

"Today, the Government and the MPs who have supported them have the blood of a former president on their hands," he said in the statement.

He also expressed his disappointment at being refused a passport to travel to visit Mr Dabwido while he was being treated.

"The Nauru Government refused us passports despite a request from myself and others to visit Sprent before his death.

"The Government prohibited us from attending a recent commitment ceremony with his partner Luci in Sydney, but we stayed in contact through the phone and social media."

The ABC has sought comment from the Government of Nauru.

Iraq, China’s CPECC in $1.07 bln deal to process gas from Halfaya oilfield

Iraq and China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation (CPECC) signed a $1.07 billion deal to build and operate facilities to process natural gas extracted alongside crude oil at Iraq’s giant Halfaya oilfield.

CPECC, an affiliate of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), will process around 300 million standard cubic feet per day (mcf/d) of natural gas extracted from the field alongside crude oil, the oil ministry said.

Halfaya, operated by PetroChina, is Maysan Oil Company’s largest oilfield, producing 370,000 barrels per day (bpd) of the company’s total output of around 510,000 bpd.

The current total production from Maysan Oil Company’s oilfields is now around 630,000 barrels per day and expected to reach 700,000 bpd in one year.

Iraq continues to flare some of the gas extracted alongside crude oil at its fields because it lacks the facilities to process it into fuel for local consumption or exports.

At the signing of the deal on Wednesday, Iraqi oil minister Thamer Ghadhban said that Iraq is in talks with international oil companies to build a 300 million cubic feet gas plant to process gas from the West Qurna 2 and Majnoon oilfields. No company has yet been selected.

The embattled assistant adjutant general of the Florida National Guard, under investigation for allegations he covered up sexual misconduct in the ranks, announced Tuesday he was stepping down.

In a statement to Military Times, Brig. Gen. Michael Canzoneri maintained his innocence, but that he was stepping down to avoid distractions.

“I maintain my innocence in the allegations,” he said. “However, the investigation is a distraction to the force, our soldiers have a mission. So in order to support our soldiers, I have chosen to step down.”

Canzoneri, a 37-year veteran who was promoted to brigadier general in December, 2016, will be on administrative leave until May 31 before entering the retired reserve, according to the guard.

In March, the Tampa Bay Times reported that the Guard — about 12,000 soldiers and airmen who deploy to combat zones and help at home in natural disasters — was facing ongoing investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct and coverups that date back a decade.

Maj. Caitlin Brown, a Florida National Guard spokeswoman, told Military Times that while none of the allegations against Canzoneri have yet been substantiated, there is an ongoing investigation into him by Department of the Army’s Office of the Inspector General.

Some of the allegations against Canzoneri were detailed out in an email to a state lawmaker from south Florida written by Maj. Elliot Potter, a Tampa-based officer in the Florida National Guard’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Potter researched the allegations and forwarded them to his superiors. A copy of his email was obtained by the Tampa Bay Times.

According to Potter, Canzoneri and another officer “have actively concealed evidence of sexual misconduct and other violence committed against soldiers of the Florida National Guard.”

Ted Lieu, a Democrat, and Ken Calvert, a Republican, wrote that the current iteration of SDA is duplicative and risks undermining the recent organization of Space and Missile Systems Center, otherwise known as SMC.

"The SDA as proposed raises questions about how it will fit with our existing military space structure. Specifically, it is unclear how the SDA as proposed will impact the role of SMC, a unit of Air Force Space Command and the longtime center of technical excellence for developing, acquiring, fielding and sustaining military space systems,” the lawmakers wrote in their letter.

Rather than creating a new organization in SDA, Lieu and Calvert proposed an expansion of SMC that would “leverage the existing aerospace ecosystem built around SMC and create new synergies with those entities.”

SMC is located at Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo, California, which Lieu represents on Capitol Hill. Calvert represents the Riverside region of the state, located between Los Angeles and San Diego.

Police have arrested 38 men and two women in the latest probe into historic sex offences in Rotherham.

They have been quizzed over the alleged sexual assault and exploitation of 13 victims, who were aged between 11 and 26 at the time of reported offences between 1997 and 2015.

The suspects are under investigation by the National Crime Agency as part of Operation Stovewood, which is looking into child sexual exploitation and abuse in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013.

The NCA said the suspects are aged between 29 and 53 and from Sheffield, Rotherham, Leeds, Dewsbury and Maidstone.

They have been arrested or interviewed by appointment over the last two months.

All have been released under investigation or bailed while enquiries continue.

Bitcoin Dips As World's Biggest Crypto Exchange Reveals $41 Million Hack

Crypto prices took a hit overnight after Hong Kong-based Binance, the world's biggest crypto exchange, revealed that hackers had absconded with 7,000 bitcoins - worth roughly $41 million at current prices - stolen from the exchange's hot wallet.

However, prices swiftly pared some of their losses after the exchange announced that customers wouldn't be responsible for the losses: Instead, depositors would be made whole with assets from Binance's 'Secure Asset Fund for Users'.

According to a blog post published by Binance CEO Zhao Zhangpeng, the company discovered a "large-scale security breach" early Wednesday morning in Hong Kong. Hackers used phishing scams, viruses and other standard hacking techniques to withdraw the entire sum from Binance's 'hot wallet' - which holds roughly 2% of deposits held by the exchange - in a single transaction.

The exchange insisted that all of its other wallets remained secure and unharmed. The hacker's withdrawal request slipped by the exchange's security protocols because it was executed at "the most opportune time" and was structured in such a way that it "passed our existing security checks."

After discovering the hack, the exchange immediately froze all withdrawals; they will remain frozen for the next week, and the exchange promised to provide regular updates on its progress.

However, while customers won't be able to withdraw currency or crypto, trading is still enabled, so anyone can adjust their positions.

Perhaps fearing what might happen to the crypto market if these types of hacks become 'normalized' (though, as far as we can tell, this would be too little, too late), Mike Novogratz, whose crypto fund lost hundreds of millions of dollars last year, insisted that the Binance hack might finally draw more regulatory scrutiny to the space (something that the dozens of other hacks have largely failed to provoke).

In a Reddit AMA held shortly after the hack was uncovered, Binance founder CZ triggered crypto purists by suggesting that Binance might push for a 'rollback' of the bitcoin blockchain to undo the hack - though he swiftly walked this back, claiming it would not be possible.

Binance will now conduct a "large scale review" of its security protocols, and most ominously, it hasn't ruled out the discovery of more breaches.

Police arrested and charged bartender Lindsey Glass, the bartender who served Spencer Hight the night he went on a murdering spree.

Spencer Hight went on a shooting spree in September 2017. He got drunk at the Local Public House, a bar just a few blocks away from his ex-wife's home, then stumbled through her door, heavily armed with a pistol, a semi-automatic rifle and a knife, police say.

His ex, Meredith Hight, was hosting a Dallas Cowboys viewing party with some mutual friends, some of who stood in their wedding. Hight shot and killed eight of those people, include his ex-wife, and seriously injured another. He did it to exact revenge on his ex-wife, authorities say. He was then shot and killed by police on the scene.

Last week, police arrested and charged Lindsey Glass, the bartender who served Hight that night, one year and seven months ago.

In 2018, the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission issued a report concluding Glass violated the "Sale to Certain Persons" law by serving Hight, whose blood alcohol level was four times the state's legal limit when he drove to his estranged wife's house, according NBC Dallas Fort Worth.

Cummings, D-Md., sent letters seeking transcribed interviews with eight current and former officials as part of two ongoing House investigations. The probes relate to the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 Census and Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt’s compliance with federal record-keeping laws.

The letters warned that “any official at the Department who ‘prohibits or prevents’ or ‘attempts or threatens to prohibit or prevent’ any officer or employee of the Federal Government from speaking with the Committee could have his or her salary withheld” pursuant to a clause in the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act.

According to a press release from the Committee, Tuesday’s letters follow seven out of eight previous requests for interviews that were “denied or have gone unanswered.”

Cummings’ letter to Cole Rojewski, the Interior Department’s director of congressional and legislative affairs, alleges that the agency "does not appear to recognize that Congress is an independent and co-equal branch of government."

The committee has asked for responses by Friday.

I think I discovered another reason for the FF measles scare/vaccination push. I am sharing a link to the online version of the printed story I found explaining what is going on, unfortunately, it is protected from me by a "paywall". So here goes: In an April 10, 2019 piece entitled "New York Orders Shots For Measles" by Melanie Grayce West, Brianna Abbott and Betsey McKay (WSJ, 4/10/2019 p.A3) there is this quote: 'Herminia Palacio, New York City's deputy mayor for Health and Human Services, said the city was counteracting anti-vaccination campaign that has included pop-up phone numbers for conference calls with "intentional efforts to give misinformation" and measles parties' Here's what I think is going on. Most parents now realize that they can avoid a toxic injection associated with the development of autism by simply letting their children GET MEASLES. This is LETHAL (not, generally, to children) but to pharmaceutical companies. Measles infection (but not vaccination) may be associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition, since vaccines are used to DELIBERATELY cause profitable diseases, a child who catches measles naturally is not only lastingly resistant to measles, they are at lower risk for long term disability and death. Plus, no direct profit to vaccine makers for (taxpayer funded!) toxic injections. I have said that, even as an adult, I'd rather risk a measles infection than the MMR. Since vaccinated people can 'shed' pathogens its time we stopped buying the canard that it is the unvaccinated who are dangerous to others. “One of the fellows in the office that manage money … bought some Amazon so it will show up in the 13F” later this month, Buffett told CNBC Thursday, on the eve of the kick off of Berkshire’s annual shareholders meeting in Omaha. Buffett was referring to either Todd Combs or Ted Weschler, who each manage portfolios of more than $13 billion in equities for Berkshire.

Buffett has long been a fan of both Amazon and its CEO Jeff Bezos, praising the company’s dominance and the founder’s business prowess. But while Buffett has sung the company’s praises, he’s never bought Amazon shares. So a headline that Berkshire was buying shares likely would spark interest in the markets.

“Yeah, I’ve been a fan, and I’ve been an idiot for not buying” Amazon shares, Buffett said. “But I want you to know it’s no personality changes taking place.”
