Late to this discussion (looking through the last bread), so maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see why PR legal status is confusing.

It is called a "commonwealth," but that means nothing. The article is bullshit, promoted by someone who wants to circumvent the Constitution.

Constitution says something is a federal territory unless/until it becomes a state. "Commonwealth" has no separate legal status. It is just a term of art.

There are 4 states that are also officially called commonwealths: Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Massachusetts.

3 of those 4 were among the original 13 states. The fact they are called commonwealths as part of their legal title is irrelevant to their constitutional status.

It's like the official name of Rhode Island is actually "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations."

Does that make it a plantation? No, it's just the official name. "Commonwealth of Kentucky" is just the official name. It's still a state.

"Commonwealth of Puerto Rico" is just the official name, it's still a territory.

The writer of the article is a troublemaker, trying to push a fake status for Puerto Rico.
