That was deliberately slanted reporting. There would likely be some weak minded in any congregation who would feel that a Christian shouldn't support any political candidate who doesn't have the moral qualifications expected of a pastor. (IE Trump has been known to swear, he's divorced, was a philanderer, et.). So, some would have complained that for him to pray for POTUS as he did in front of the congregation was akin to an endorsement. He was merely apologizing for appearing to endorse a less that stellar moral being. I think people holding that view are mistake, but he he to minster to the weak minded in his congregation as well as the strong. And he apologized for what may have appeared to be trampling upon the weak consciences of some of the congregation. He did not apologize for praying only for appearing to endorse.
