That red dress was absolutely no accident, although FLOTUS has worn the cape-sleeve style previously. It's very distinctive and beautiful on her. The way the beading is applied to the neckline is also reminiscent of Diana, who had a blue gown with beading applied in a similar style (pic related)

The jewelry Diana is wearing in this photo caught my eye. I don't recall seeing photos of Diana in that dress before, but the jewelry is practically iconic.

The Oman Sapphire Suite, composed of a necklace, earrings, and bracelet set in a modern style, which was a gift from the Sultan of Oman during a 1986 Tour of the Gulf States.

The Princess debuted the Oman Suite for a Banquet in Bonn during a 1987 tour of Germany. The Oman Suite was worn later the same year, with a Murray Arbeid gown, for a Gala Performance at the Royal Opera House in Covent garden.

The next month, the Princess of Wales wore the suite for a fashion show at the Sydney Opera House during a Tour of Australia.

The last time the Princess was pictured wearing the set was at the premiere of the film โ€˜Hauntedโ€™ at the Empire Cinema in London in October 1995. It now belongs to Prince William and Prince Harry, but has yet to be seen, possibly because of itโ€™s 80s style.

Diana was well known for choosing clothes that quietly spoke a message for her; the black "revenge" dress she wore to an event the night that Charles' infamous interview in which he admitted his cheating with Camilla.

Diana. Until 9/11, the most shocking, dumbfounding news I've ever received.

Elizabeth was blindsided by the avalanche of bad press, and public demonstrations, after Diana's death

I still remember it well. The RF was in Balmoral as usual for that time of year (August).

William and Harry were there along with Charles, who broke the news to them.

The video of the Queen actually bowing her head to Diana's coffin as it passed by the family, who were all standing together at the palace gates.

The TV coverage was indescribable to watch live.

All I can remember is the horrific images, and the massive, massive crowds silent except for the sobbing and wailing. I'd never heard anything like it before, and hope to never hear it again.

Years later, I was visiting friends in Northampton UK, and we drove down a little country lane past Althorp, the Spencer family estate.

We went to the TINY nearby village, Great Brington, and stopped at the little pub for some food. A couple of other men knew my friend, and they started chatting. "Did you tell your friends where she really is?" one said.

No one in that community thinks her body is in that tomb on the Althorp property.

The two guys at the pub started talking about the night before the funeral. They said the police closed the roads, and some trucks showed up at the ancient village church. Lighting equipment was set up and turned on, and the guys said it was obvious people were working in the church all night long.

Diana Spencer, they were completely convinced, is buried in the Spencer tomb inside the church at Great Brington, along with her father and 19 generations of her Spencer ancestors.

We visited the church the next day. It is a jewelbox of an ancient place, with worn stone floors and needlepoint kneelers at every pew. The Spencer chapel is protected by ornamental iron gates, with large marble effigies of long-deceased Spencers inside.

I don't believe this story is the "conspiracy theory" that you can find on the internet; I think it's true. My friend and his friends had lived nearby all their lives, and were very serious when they talked about it.

That church is unique for something else:

Just as interesting, especially for American visitors, is a worn grave slab in the chancel. The slab commemorates Lawrence Washington (d. 1616), a direct ancestor of George Washington, first President of the United States. The heraldic shield on Washington's grave lab shows the Washington coat of arms with alternating rows of stars and stripes, the model later used by George Washington for the American flag.

Sorry to ramble, anons. It was an unexpected experience on that trip. I need to go back sometime, because the years are ticking by so quickly.

It's more than possible that JA would be flown back on an aircraft very specially equipped for fragile medical patients. Immediately thought of this company, being a Georgianon. These folks are equipped and staffed for anything conceivable, even Ebola:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_Air

Phoenix Air Group, often just referred to as Phoenix Air, is a non-scheduled airline headquartered in Cartersville, Georgia, USA, with the city's airport serving as its base. Founded in 1978 by Army helicopter pilot and race car driver Mark Thompson, Phoenix Air operates worldwide charter flights (passenger and cargo; catering for corporate, military or air ambulance demands).

Phoenix Air employs just over 200 skilled workers from Cartersville, Ga and the Atlanta metro area.

In 2007, Phoenix Air had been named the world's largest owner-operator of Grumman Gulfstream I aircraft. At that time, its fleet consisted of the following:[1]

4 Bombardier Learjet 35

2 Bombardier Learjet 35A

7 Bombardier Learjet 36A

8 Grumman Gulfstream I

3 Gulfstream III**

1 Gulfstream II

1 Gulfstream IIB

3 Embraer 120

Now all of Phoenix Air's fleet of Learjets, Gulfstream G-I and Gulfstream G-III aircraft meet ICAO Chapter 3, Stage 3 Noise Compliance requirements and can operate into and out of all noise sensitive airports throughout the world.

One Gulfstream III (G-III), N173PA, has been fitted with an Airborne Biomedical Containment System (ABCS), funded by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).[2] It has been used for transporting of patients suffering from the deadly Ebola outbreak in West Africa in 2014. This is the only aircraft in the world capable of safely transporting patients of highly communicable diseases that offers a high degree of protection to the aircraft's crew and the accompanying medical staff[citation needed]. This aircraft is currently under an "on demand" $5 million USD contract to the US State Department. As the virus spread, officials from the World Health Organization, U.N. and Britain, among others, all approached Phoenix Air to sign exclusive deals.

The bio-containment unit is a special negative pressure transport tube that allows medical personnel to treat Ebola patients while in flight. Decontamination includes hydrogen peroxide fog, quaternary ammonia, spore strip testing, and burning of the envelope.[2][3]

As of 14 October 2014, two Phoenix Air Gulfstreams were able to carry Ebola patients, and another jet was being equipped.[4]

That's true as well; I was just assuming AF1 would be fully loaded with POTUS, staff, and press for this trip, and it might be a little crowded to bring JA along in part of the cabin.

No idea.

At any rate, can't imagine that we'd get to see him boarding a plane.

This week is getting more remarkable by the hour.
