House Passes Mass Amnesty Bill Which Would Give Millions Of Illegal Immigrants A Path To Citizenship

The House passed a vote Tuesday that would grant protection from deportation to illegal immigrants and give millions a path to permanent citizenship status.

The American Dream and Promise Act passed the House with a vote of 236-187. The legislation was brought forward by California Democratic Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard and will provide permanent status to illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as minors, as well as to those living in the U.S. under Temporary Protected Status, Newsweek reported.

This all comes as apprehensions of immigrants have increased every month since January. There have also been over 100,000 encounters at the southern border in both March and April, making it so the border crisis is on track to be the highest it has been in a decade.

The legislation would make it so 2.1 million immigrants “would be eligible under the measures for Dreamers, undocumented immigrants who arrived in the United States as children.”

The House Judiciary Committee criticized Democrats for pushing the bill forward, listing a number of reasons why amnesty should not be granted to illegal immigrants.

“H.R. 6 would provide green cards to criminals, including gang members and people who committed potentially serious crimes as juveniles, with multiple DUI convictions and with misdemeanor firearms-related convictions. Dems are prioritizing mass amnesty over public safety,” The House Judiciary Committee also said in a tweet.

President Donald Trump’s administration has already threatened to veto the legislation, saying it would be “undermining key administration immigration objectives and policy priorities, such as protecting our communities and defending our borders.”

The bill will likely be shut down in the Senate.

Trump Campaign Lawyers Demand DNC Drop Lawsuit Citing Mueller Report

In May, the legal team for Trump’s campaign demanded the DNC withdraw its lawsuit alleging a conspiracy between Trump and Russia after the release of Robert Mueller’s report. The DNC refused and now Trump's campaign lawyers are taking them to court.

US President Trump's 2016 campaign lawyers went to court on Tuesday filing a claim against the Democratic National Committee that is alleging in a lawsuit that Trump's campaign conspired with Russia to secure Trump's victory. The lawyers turned to the recently released Mueller Report saying the document revealed a "doomed effort to prove a falsehood."

"The assumption [of the lawsuit], was that the Special Counsel would substantiate the DNC's claims," Trump's campaign lawyers wrote. "Suffice it to say, that assumption did not pan out."

The lawyers argued that the Mueller probe "definitively refuted the notion that the Campaign conspired or in any way coordinated with Russia."

Released on 18 April, the 448-page Mueller report revealed there was no evidence of the alleged "collusion" Trump opponents keep accusing him of. The controversy surrounding the report is due to a considerable part of the public version of the document having been redacted.

The lawyers say the report "debunks any such conclusion by walking through the vast body of evidence collected and establishing that none of this evidence showed that the Campaign formed any sort of agreement with Russia."

"The DNC has thus made clear that it wants to proceed with a politically motivated sham of a case, tying up the resources of this Court and the Campaign — and inevitably burdening the President himself — all in a doomed effort to prove a falsehood," they continued.

Earlier in May, the lawyers sent a letter to the DNC demanding they withdraw their lawsuit within three weeks or face the possibility of sanctions.

On Sunday, DNC lawyers responded with threats that any attempt to request sanctions against the Committee will be met with sanctions against the campaign.

"Over the course of more than 100 pages, the Report details the Campaign's repeated suspicious interactions with Russian agents, confirming and bolstering the central allegations of the DNC's" lawsuit, Joseph Sellers, a DNC lawyer said Sunday. "[Mueller] reiterated in a televised press conference last week that a decision not to prosecute should not be confused with an exoneration. And yet, this is exactly what the Trump Campaign does in its letter," Sellers added.

Both Russia and the White House repeatedly denied all allegations of collusion or conspiracy, which special counsellor Robert Mueller investigated, conducting thousands of interviews with hundreds of witnesses, and eventually finding no basis for charging Trump with collusion.

Utah will test hidden technology that tries to find weapons among crowds at schools, stadiums and churches

Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes is partnering with Georgia-based Liberty Defense to test and promote a product that uses 3D imaging and artificial intelligence to detect concealed weapons on people in public spaces.

The company’s product, HEXWAVE, can be hidden in walls and other structures as it scans for objects like guns, knives and explosives obscured by clothing or bags, according to a promotional video on the Liberty Defense website.

The technology, as Liberty Defense has described it, appears to “strike the balance between privacy interests on one side and security and safety,” Reyes said. “Hexwave seems to be right in that sweet spot."

According to Liberty Defense, the agreement with Reyes includes the attorney general facilitating introductions between the company and prospective clients and advising interested parties on the potential uses of HEXWAVE. Park City police have had discussions with the company about testing it at the Sundance Film Festival. Because the imaging technology identifies objects, rather than the people carrying them, Reyes said he believes it could be less invasive than, say, facial recognition technology or even driver license scanners.

“If you can imagine an open place like Park City during Sundance to be able to have a little more of an awareness of what — not who and what their identity is and where they live and what their driver license is — but what they might have on them and where that is, … to make sure everybody is as safe as possible.”

The company also suggests the technology could be installed at sporting and concert arenas, school campuses, churches, government buildings and amusement parks. Reyes said some companies in Utah have already expressed interest in being part of the HEXWAVE tests.

“HEXWAVE can be applied in a variety of settings to provide a means to identify possible threats before they advance into attacks," Bill Riker, CEO of Liberty Defense, said in a statement. “We are excited that the attorney general of Utah recognizes the potential value of this technology and the opportunity it provides for enhanced security in the state.”

Clark Aposhian, a gun-rights advocate and chairman of the Utah Shooting Sports Council, said he wonders about the practical applications for the technology in Utah. Private venues — like the Sundance Film Festival — are free to prohibit weapons, but state law permits concealed carry in public spaces like parks, school campuses and the Utah State Capitol.

“People can walk in there with guns,” Aposhian said. “Permit holders do that all the time.”

Aposhian said there’s the potential for lawful gun owners to be harassed by any new approach to security. But most places where weapons are prohibited are already equipped with metal detectors and other types of scanners, he said, and it might be difficult to effectively deploy the HEXWAVE devices in a state with so many authorized gun owners.

RANDOLPH COUNTY, Ark. (KAIT) - An investigation is underway into an unattended death at Former State Senator Linda Collins-Smith’s home.

The death is being investigated as suspicious.

Former press secretary Ken Yang confirmed to Region 8 News that Collins-Smith that was found dead.

However, Sheriff Kevin Bell told Region 8 News that they are waiting for the state crime lab, which is enroute to the scene, to confirm the identity and the cause of death.

The sheriff said that they do not believe the public is in danger.

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation and Arkansas State Police are on scene assisting.

PatronScan says it sells security. Privacy advocates worry it’s selling mass surveillance.

We’ve all seen it, and some of us have lived it: A bar patron mouths off to a bouncer, tags a wall, gets in a fight, or is just too drunk and disorderly. They’re not just kicked out for the night, but “eighty-sixed” — permanently banned from the establishment.

Now imagine if a bar owner could flag that ejected patron digitally, documenting their transgression for other bar owners to see and placing them on a nightlife equivalent of a no fly list that stretches across city, state, and even international borders.

PatronScan allows bars to do just that. The PatronScan kiosk, placed at the entrance of a bar or nightlife establishment, can verify whether an ID is real or fake, and collect and track basic customer demographic data. For bars, accurate ID scanners are valuable tools that help weed out underage drinkers, protecting the establishments’ liquor licenses from fines and scrupulous state alcohol boards. But PatronScan’s main selling point is security.

The system allows a business to maintain a record of bad customer behavior and flag those individuals, alerting every other bar that uses PatronScan. What constitutes “bad behavior” is at a bar manager’s discretion, and ranges from “sexual assault” to “violence” to “public drunkenness” and “other.” When a bargoer visits another PatronScan bar and swipes their ID, their previously flagged transgressions will pop up on the kiosk screen. Unless patrons successfully appeal their status to PatronScan or the bar directly, their status can follow them for anywhere from a couple weeks to a few months, to much, much longer. According to a PatronScan “Public Safety Report” from May 2018, the average length of bans handed out to customers in Sacramento, California was 19 years. PatronScan claims to have a networked list of more than 40,000 banned customers.

The same report indicates that PatronScan collected and retained information on over 10,000 patrons in Sacramento in a single day. Within a five month period, that added up to information on over 500,000 bargoers. PatronScan claims to have a networked list of more than 40,000 banned customers, many of whom may not even know about their eighty-sixed status until they try to gain entry into another bar covered by the system.

To some onlookers, PatronScan’s product raises a number of concerns about privacy, surveillance, and discrimination. PatronScan’s reports reveal the company logged where customers live, the household demographics for that area, how far each customer travelled to a bar, and how many different bars they had visited. According to the company’s own policies, the company readily shares the information it collects on patrons, both banned and not, at the request of police. In addition to selling its kiosks to individual bars and nightlife establishments, PatronScan also advertises directly to cities, suggesting that they mandate the adoption of their service.

PatronScan represents an extreme example of the growing adoption of data collection at bars and restaurants. Such establishments have long had informal systems for tracking problematic patrons. Today, many bars also have internal surveillance systems, which track customer trends and catalog granular data on purchasing habits. Those tools are growing increasingly sophisticated, with obvious benefits to venue owners and law enforcement.

For bargoers, however, these systems create an uncomfortable new paradigm for partying, one in which data-sharing is a norm and technological tools can multiply the consequences of a single bad night. And once a bar adopts an ID scanning system, even innocent patrons may never know where their ID data will end up, or how it will be used.

U.S. shared nuclear power info with Saudi Arabia after Khashoggi killed

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration granted two authorizations to U.S. companies to share sensitive nuclear power information with Saudi Arabia shortly after the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October, a U.S. senator who saw the approvals said on Tuesday.

The timing of the approvals is likely to heap pressure on the administration of President Donald Trump from lawmakers who have become increasingly critical of U.S. support for Saudi Arabia since Khashoggi was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October.

Khashoggi, a native of Saudi Arabia, left in 2017 to became a resident of the United States where he published columns in the Washington Post critical of the kingdom’s leadership.

Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, where Khashoggi lived, called the timing of the approvals “shocking” and said it adds to a “disturbing pattern of behavior” of the administration’s policy on Saudi Arabia. The Department of Energy granted the first part 810 authorization on Oct. 18, 16 days after Khashoggi was killed. The second occurred on Feb. 18.

U.S. authorities have concluded that responsibility for Khashoggi’s death went to the highest levels of the Saudi government. Riyadh has denied that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was involved.

The authorizations were among seven granted to U.S. companies by Trump’s administration since 2017, as Washington and Riyadh negotiate a potential wider agreement to help Saudi Arabia develop its first two nuclear power reactors.

The Energy Department has kept information in the approvals to Saudi Arabia confidential, citing protection of business interests.

The department confirmed the two authorizations were issued after the killing of Khashoggi, but did not respond to a question about why the names of the companies have not been released. In the past, 810 approvals have been made available for the public to view at department headquarters.

An 810 authorization “simply provides U.S. companies the ability to compete in the international civil nuclear market,” the official said.

Lawmakers have been anxious to be kept abreast of talks on nuclear power development between the administration and Riyadh to make sure any deal contains strict nuclear nonproliferation standards.

Saudi Arabia and Washington had begun talks about nuclear power development before Trump’s presidency. But progress has been slow as the kingdom opposes measures that would prevent it from enriching uranium and reprocessing plutonium, two potential pathways to making fissile material for nuclear weapons.

Last year the crown prince said the kingdom did not want to acquire a nuclear bomb, but if its arch-rival Iran did, “we will follow suit as soon as possible.”

Kaine, who had urged the administration to release the authorizations, said the approvals were “one of the many steps the administration is taking that is fueling a dangerous escalation of tension in the region.”

Late last month, Trump declared a national emergency because of tensions with Iran and swept aside objections from Congress to complete the sale of more than $8 billion worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.

Riyadh plans to issue a multibillion-dollar tender in 2020 to build its first two nuclear power reactors, sources said in April. Originally expected last year, the tender has been delayed several times.

The United States, South Korea, Russia, China and France are competing for the business. Reactor builder Westinghouse, which has been hit by a downfall in the U.S. nuclear power industry, would likely sell components to Saudi Arabia in any deal involving U.S. technology. Westinghouse is now owned by Brookfield Asset Management Inc.

New York Times Trades ‘Fetal Heartbeat’ For ‘Embryonic Pulsing’ In Abortion Reporting

The New York Times traded in the term “fetal heartbeat” for “embryonic pulsing” in a report on Louisiana’s new abortion ban last week, playing to abortion advocates and journalists eager to downplay the realities of abortion.

“The measure would require an ultrasound test for any woman seeking to terminate a pregnancy, and forbid abortion if the test detects embryonic pulsing — which can occur before many women know they are pregnant,” reporter Alan Blinder wrote. The sanitizing language was first highlighted by Breitbart News. It’s not a medical term and was apparently invented by Blinder.

A slew of states have similar laws on the books, known as fetal heartbeat bills because they ban abortion after a heartbeat can be detected in the unborn baby. Blinder goes out of his way to avoid the term throughout the piece, noting in the lead that the bill bans the procedure “after the pulsing of what becomes the fetus’s heart can be detected.”

An unborn baby isn’t considered a fetus in medical terms until the 11th week of pregnancy, when most of its major organs are formed. But the heartbeat of the boy or girl can be detected as early as 6 weeks.

Blinder’s decision to use “embryonic pulsing” instead of heartbeat falls in line with larger media efforts to dehumanize unborn babies and sanitize the reality of abortion. NPR urged journalists not to use the term unless absolutely necessary in recent guidance published as a reminder to reporters on its policies for abortion reporting.

The guidance explicitly instructs reporters to adopt opaque or sanitized terms and Planned Parenthood talking points while avoiding any terms that could come across as pro-life or inadvertently humanize the unborn. Reporters are told not to use the term fetal heartbeat unless it is in quotes and attributed to pro-life activists.

The guidance states: “One thing to keep in mind about this law and others like it: Proponents refer to it as a ‘fetal heartbeat’ law. That is their term. It needs to be attributed to them if used and put in quotation marks if printed. We should not simply say the laws are about when a ‘fetal heartbeat’ is detected. As we’ve reported, heartbeat activity can be detected ‘about six weeks into a pregnancy.’ That’s at least a few weeks before an embryo is a fetus.”

Australian Federal Police raid ABC headquarters at Sydney's Ultimo

Australian Federal Police are carrying out a raid on the ABC headquarters in the inner-Sydney suburb of Ultimo.

Three officers entered the Harris Street building just before 11.30am. The plain-clothes officers were met by ABC security and staff in the lobby area of the ABC Ultimo Centre before meeting lawyers for the broadcaster.

The raids are in connection with a 2017 report called "the Afghan files", based on leaked defence documents.

The police warrant names ABC reporters Dan Oakes and Sam Clark and news director Gaven Morris.

The story revealed incidents of Australian troops killing unarmed men and children, with the cases being investigated as potential unlawful killings.

The sensitive documents were marked as "AUSTEO" - Australian eyes only.

The raid comes the day after Australian Federal Police raided the home of News Corp journalist Annika Smethurst in connection with a 2018 story she authored concerning top-secret plans to expand surveillance of Australian citizens. Smethurst has not been charged with any offence.

It also comes days after a former Australian military lawyer, charged over the leak of documents to the ABC, was committed to stand trial in the ACT Supreme Court.

David William McBride, 55, is accused of theft and three counts of breaching the Defence Act, for being a person who is a member of the Defence Force and communicating a plan, document or information, an offence that carries an unlimited fine or prison time as penalty when heard on indictment.

ABC executive editor John Lyons, who is tweeting Wednesday's conversation between ABC lawyers and the AFP officers, said police have told them Wednesday's raid is not in connection with Tuesday's search of Smethurst's house.

"ABC lawyers tell AFP: We waive no rights, and reserve the right to take injunction against the warrant," Lyons tweeted.

"The AFP tell us they are interested in 'certain things'."

In a statement, the Australian Federal Police said Wednesday's search warrant "relates to a referral received on 11 July 2017 from the Chief of the Defence Force and the then-acting Secretary for Defence".

The raids were "in relation to allegations of publishing classified material, contrary to provisions of the Crimes Act 1914".

"All AFP search warrants are authorised by a magistrate or an appropriate member of the judiciary. This is the result of supporting documentation or material being presented to the court which provides sufficient suspicion that a criminal offence has been committed," the statement said.

"No arrests are planned today as a result of this activity."

ABC managing director David Anderson said it was "highly unusual" for the national broadcaster to be raided in this way.

"This is a serious development and raises legitimate concerns over freedom of the press and proper public scrutiny of national security and defence matters," he said in a statement.

"The ABC stands by its journalists, will protect its sources and continue to report without fear or favour on national security and intelligence issues when there is a clear public interest."

Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Wednesday said he was not troubled by a federal police raid on the home of Smethurst, arguing all Australians must abide by national security laws.

2GB radio host Ben Fordham also revealed this week that he had been contacted by the Department of Home Affairs about his reporting, with the department investigating how he obtained "highly confidential" information about asylum seeker vessels.

Fordham said the department was seeking his co-operation with the probe, which could become a criminal investigation and "potentially" involve a police raid.

Journalists' union the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance said a second day of raids set a "disturbing pattern of assaults on Australian press freedom" and was an attack on the public's right to know.

"Police raiding journalists is becoming normalised and it has to stop," union official Marcus Strom said.

"These raids are about intimidating journalists and media organisations because of their truth-telling. They are about more than hunting down whistleblowers that reveal what governments are secretly doing in our name, but also preventing the media from shining a light on the actions of government."

Strom said the Coalition and Labor had together created a legal environment that was enabling a "politically motivated assault" on public interest journalism.

Centre Alliance senator Rex Patrick immediately hit out at the latest police raids, saying the ABC's investigation was clearly in the public interest.

"It appears this is the chosen week for a full-blown attack on freedom of the press in this country," he said.

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young called for an urgent inquiry into press freedom.

"Another day, another AFP raid on Australian journalists. This is a very worrying sign," she said.

Suspicious unattended death investigation ongoing involving former State Senator

RANDOLPH COUNTY, Ark. (KAIT) - An investigation is underway into an unattended death at Former State Senator Linda Collins-Smith’s home.

The death is being investigated as suspicious.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said its officers carried out a search warrant at the head office of the government-funded Australian Broadcasting Corp. (ABC) in Sydney on Wednesday. That came a day after police raided the home of a News Corp editor, although the AFP said the raids were unrelated.

“It is highly unusual for the national broadcaster to be raided in this way,” ABC Managing Director David Anderson said in a statement. “This is a serious development and raises legitimate concerns over freedom of the press and proper public scrutiny of national security and defense matters,” he said. The AFP said the ABC raid was in relation to allegations it had published classified material and followed a referral from the chief of the Australian Defence Force and a former acting defense secretary in 2017. The ABC raid was authorized by a court and based on evidence that provided “sufficient suspicion that a criminal offence has been committed”, the AFP said in a statement.

Marcus Strom, president of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance trade union, said on his Twitter account the two raids were “just outrageous”. “Police raiding journalists is becoming normalized. It has to stop,” he said. The ABC raid was in relation to a series of broadcasts in 2017 about alleged misconduct by Australian troops in Afghanistan, the broadcaster said.

The raid on the News Corp editor related to a 2018 newspaper report that said Australian intelligence agencies wanted to carry out surveillance by accessing people’s emails, bank accounts and text messages, domestic media reported. News Corp called the raid on its employee “outrageous and heavy handed”, and “a dangerous act of intimidation”. The Rupert Murdoch-controlled company said it had “the most serious concerns about the willingness of governments to undermine the Australian public’s right to know about important decisions governments are making”.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison was reported as saying he believed in media freedom but that there were also clear rules about the use of classified information. “​It never troubles me that our laws are being upheld,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Morrison as saying.

Toyota estimates Trump's Mexico tariffs could cost over $1 bil.

NEW YORK (Kyodo) – Toyota Motor Corp. estimates that U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on Mexican-made goods could cost its major suppliers more than $1 billion, Reuters news agency reported Tuesday.

The Japanese carmaker provided the estimate in an email to its U.S. dealers, in which it also said 65 percent of the Tacoma midsize pickup trucks it plans to sell in the U.S. market in 2019 will be imported from its plant in Baja, Mexico, according to Reuters.

Trump has threatened Mexico with new levies beginning next Monday unless it stops migrants from crossing into the United States.

In the email dated Monday, Toyota's North American sales chief Bob Carter was reported to have told dealers that the duties could cost its major suppliers between $215 million and $1.07 billion.

Mexican officials to meet Pence in last-ditch talks to avert tariffs

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mexican officials will seek to persuade the White House in talks hosted by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday that their government has done enough to stem immigration and avoid looming tariffs. They warned the White House not to count on the same level of backing it got earlier this year, when Trump declared a national emergency to divert funds to build barriers at the border. “We’re not real fond of tariffs, so don’t assume you can have the exact same level of support. That was my basic message,” Senator Ron Johnson told reporters after a meeting between lawmakers and White House officials on Tuesday.

The tariff threat has also raised questions over the future of a three-way deal with Canada to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement, concluded after a year of negotiations. Pence is the Trump administration’s point person for getting Congress to approve the new deal, known as USMCA, which he has pledged will happen this year.

Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard will attend the talks, set to take place in Washington on Wednesday afternoon. Ebrard has said the threatened tariffs would be devastating to Mexico’s economy and would not stop the waves of migrants from crossing the southern U.S. border. The Mexican delegation is expected to try to show the White House that authorities are taking steps to stem the flow of migrants, with Mexico detaining double the number per day than it was a year ago.
