BEIJING (Reuters) - The United States has shipped several million tonnes of soybeans to China since the two country’s leaders met in June, Chinese state media said on Sunday, ahead of fresh trade talks in Shanghai this week.

Chinese companies have made inquiries about buying U.S. soybeans, cotton, pork, sorghum and will continue to purchase U.S. agricultural goods if prices and quality remain reasonable, Chinese official broadcaster CCTV said on Sunday.

The reports said the United States should take specific measures to make good on its promises to improve economic and trade ties.

Russian opposition leader Navalny hospitalized with allergic reaction: spokeswoman

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, currently serving a jail stint for calling for unauthorized protests, was hospitalized after suffering an acute allergic reaction on Sunday, his spokeswoman said.

Navalny was jailed for 30 days this week for calling for an unauthorized march to protest against the exclusion of several opposition-minded candidates from a local election later this year.

Police rounded up more than 1,000 people in the Russian capital at the march on Saturday in one of the biggest crackdowns of recent years against the opposition.

Kira Yarmysh, Navalny’s spokeswoman, wrote on Twitter that he had been hospitalized on Sunday morning with “severe swelling of the face and skin redness.”

She said the cause of Navalny’s allergic reaction was unknown and that he had never had suffered from such reactions in the past.

The Russian Interior Ministry and the Moscow hospital where Navalny’s spokeswoman said he was being treated could not immediately be reached for comment.

Navalny, Russia’s most prominent opposition figure, has served several stints in jail in recent years for organizing anti-government demonstrations.

The European Court of Human Rights last year ruled that Russia’s arrests and detention of Navalny in 2012 and 2014 were politically-motivated and breached his human rights, a ruling Moscow called questionable.

Cyprus police arrest Briton in rape claim, free Israelis

ATHENS (Reuters) - Police in Cyprus arrested a 19-year-old British woman on Sunday on suspicion of filing a false complaint of gang rape for which a dozen Israeli teens had been detained as suspects, two police sources said.

Seven of the Israelis were released on Sunday, a police official said. Five had been released last week.

The 12 individuals had initially been detained on a court order in mid-July after the woman said she had been assaulted in a hotel room in the resort of Ayia Napa. The youths had denied the claim.

“Rape never took place,” one of the sources said. The woman is being held on suspicion of public mischief after giving another statement to police.

Israeli Education Minister Rafael Peretz, speaking to reporters outside a cabinet meeting on Sunday, said of the Cyprus case: “We need to check the details. We are certainly in favor of the children of Israel having the highest moral standard.”

Vietnam seizes 125 kg of rhino horns, seven tiger carcasses

HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnam said it has seized more than 125 kg (275 lb) of rhino horns hidden in plaster blocks and shipped from United Arab Emirates, the latest large-scale wildlife trafficking case in Southeast Asia.

The rhino horns were discovered earlier this week at Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport in cargo that arrived on an Etihad Airways flight, the customs department said in a statement.

Trade in rhino horns, which is believed to have medicinal value, is illegal in Vietnam. The country is also a destination for other illegal wildlife products such as pangolin scales and elephant ivory.

Separately, police in Vietnam earlier this week arrested three men for transporting seven frozen tiger carcasses from Laos to Hanoi, state media reported.

That comes after authorities in Singapore last week said they seized a record haul of 8.8 tonnes of ivory headed to Vietnam that came from nearly 300 African elephants.
