Everybody in the organization steals money somehow. And they pay a vigorish up the line which goes to the men behind the curtain at the top of the pyramid. These people, who are fantastically rich, have trillions of dollars in secret fortunes.
Now like any organization there are ranks. At the lowest level are the soldiers, who follow orders. Then if you do good work, you can be promoted to a capo. Being a secret society, there is a ritual, to seal the deal and to introduce your rank to the world. A capo is an important step, because the soldiers pay their vig to their capo, and he uses some and pays a percentage (or a taste) as his vig up the line.
The ritual is to get a black eye, and you have to make this publicly known, because it tells everyone, that you are in the mob, and you are a capo rank.
I'm using Mafia terms, but this Satanic cult is not quite the Mafia. They do own the Mafia, the nDrangheta, the Corsicans, the Hezbollah, the Yakuza, the Triads, and so on.
Back in the Trilateral Commission days, when the New World Order was uniting all the gangs, they had to establish unified rituals. As part of this there were education campaigns like this one. This was telling soldiers, that a black eye was the symbol of entry into the rank which collected the taste. This is how the soldier knew, that their capo was approved by upper management.
