I was in Australia during Gulf War II and one night my friend and I stepped out to assuage our munchies in a burger joint. While my friend was ordering, a somewhat drunken native rushed him and clocked him in the head screaming "Fuck off out of here, you fucking American cunt!"
My friend, dazed and perplexed screamed back at him "I'm not an American, I'm Canadian." The change that came over the drunken yobbo was amazing and he started apologising profusely and ended up paying for his meal.
Indeed, the image of Americans overseas has long been tarnished and Americans have been very arrogant and slow to recognise this after the many decades in which they were held in good stead in the international community.
