Any reduction in the 12-month timeline will depend on how quickly Iran continues to enrich and stockpile uranium. Tehran would need to produce about 1,050 kilograms of uranium hexafluoride gas enriched to 3.67-percent U-235 to produce enough weapons-grade material (more than 90 percent-enriched U-235) for one bomb.

 

Kamalvandi also said that Iran was increasing its production of heavy water and would exceed the JCPOA’s 130-metric-ton cap in two-and-a-half months. According to the IAEA, Iran had 125 metric tons as of May 26.

Lebanon has no intention of turning former auto executive-turned fugitive Carlos Ghosn over to Japanese authorities, Lebanese Justice Minister Albert Serhan told the Mainichi Shimbun on Jan. 3.

Former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Ghosn, 65, was out on bail in Tokyo awaiting trial for suspected violations of the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act among other charges, when he fled to Lebanon. Serhan told the Mainichi he plans to question Ghosn soon, saying, "We will carry out the investigations that are needed, including asking Mr. Ghosn his side of the story." At the same time, Serhan said that he had no intention of extraditing the ex-Nissan chief to Japan.

 

Lebanon's former education minister, Hassan Diab, was appointed prime minister-designate in December 2019, and as he is in the process of forming his Cabinet, Serhan, who was justice minister in the previous administration, is in the position of caretaker justice minister.

 

Serhan reconfirmed that on Jan. 2 the Lebanese government received a notice from the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) asking that Ghosn be taken into custody. He said that in response to this, the Lebanese government would fulfill its obligation to investigate, and that going forward, Lebanese prosecutors would deliberate whether it would be necessary to take Ghosn into custody or prevent him from leaving the country. At the same time, the justice minister emphasized that Japan and Lebanon did not have an extradition treaty, and that Ghosn "has the right to stand trial in Lebanon." He avoided stating whether Ghosn entered Lebanon on a French passport, but did say that he had entered the country with "legal documentation."

 

Reports say that at the Jan. 8 press conference that Ghosn is slated to hold, he will refrain from going into detail about his escape from Japan out of concern for those in the country who assisted him. In April, 2017 Scientific American published a piece by Walter Quattrociocchi called "Inside the Echo Chamber". I think the DS is really aware of the spread of truth via social media and desperately wants to counteract it. Indonesian authorities are turning to the technique of cloud seeding to try to stop more rain falling in the flood-hit capital Jakarta. Former Democratic lawmaker sentenced to prison for misusing funds

 

 

A former Democratic state lawmaker in Maryland was sentenced to six months in prison for taking money from her campaign for personal use.

 

Former Maryland Del. Tawanna Gaines, 67, was also given two months of home detention after she completes her prison sentence and must pay $22,565 in restitution.

 

“I took my oath very seriously, but I fell short,” she said in court on Friday, according to the Associated Press.

 

Gaines is required to report to prison by Feb. 24.

 

Gaines, who served in the House of Delegates since 2001, pleaded guilty in October to wire fraud. She resigned days before her guilty plea.

I was in Australia during Gulf War II and one night my friend and I stepped out to assuage our munchies in a burger joint. While my friend was ordering, a somewhat drunken native rushed him and clocked him in the head screaming "Fuck off out of here, you fucking American cunt!"

My friend, dazed and perplexed screamed back at him "I'm not an American, I'm Canadian." The change that came over the drunken yobbo was amazing and he started apologising profusely and ended up paying for his meal.

Indeed, the image of Americans overseas has long been tarnished and Americans have been very arrogant and slow to recognise this after the many decades in which they were held in good stead in the international community.

Maybe, after the dust settles, we all can all unite with one voice as we have done on this board and previous incarnations..

L.B.J. envisions a Great Society in his State of the Union address

On January 4, 1965, in his State of the Union address, President Lyndon Baines Johnson lays out for Congress a laundry list of legislation needed to achieve his plan for a Great Society. On the heels of John F. Kennedy’s tragic death, Americans had elected Johnson, his vice president, to the presidency by the largest popular vote in the nation’s history. Johnson used this mandate to push for improvements he believed would better Americans’ quality of life.

 

Following Johnson’s lead, Congress enacted sweeping legislation in the areas of civil rights, health care, education and the environment. The 1965 State of the Union address heralded the creation of Medicare/Medicaid, Head Start, the Voting Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the White House Conference on Natural Beauty. Johnson also signed the National Foundation of the Arts and Humanities Act, out of which emerged the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Through the Economic Opportunity Act, Johnson fought a War on Poverty by implementing improvements in early childhood education and fair employment policies. He was also a strong advocate for conservation, proposing the creation of a green legacy through preserving natural areas, open spaces and shorelines and building more urban parks. In addition, Johnson stepped up research and legislation regarding air- and water-pollution control measures.

Under Kennedy, then-Vice President Johnson led the government’s quest to develop American excellence in the sciences. As president, the ongoing technology race with the Soviet Union spurred Johnson to continue the vigorous national program of space exploration begun by Kennedy. During Johnson’s presidency, the National Air and Space Administration (NASA) achieved the extraordinary and unprecedented accomplishment of orbiting a man around the moon.

 

Though many of Johnson’s programs remain in place today, his legacy of a Great Society has been largely overshadowed by his decision to involve greater numbers of American soldiers in the controversial Vietnam War.
