Russia Announces New Ceasefire In Idlib

Russian and Turkey reached a new ceasefire on Idlib de-escalation zone in Syria’s northwestern region, Maj. Gen. Yuri Borenkov, commander of the Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria, announced late on January 9.

“In accordance with the agreements reached with the Turkish side, a ceasefire regime was introduced in the Idlib de-escalation zone from 02.00 pm Moscow time [11:00 GMT] on January 9,” RT quoted the Russian commander as saying.

The new ceasefire came as a surprise. Recent reports suggested that the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) was preparing to resume ground operations in southeast Idlib.

A month ago, the army launched a large-scale military operation in southeast Idlib, capturing more than 40 villages and towns in the region.

Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which controls most of Idlib de-escalation zone, has not commented on the Russian announcement, so far.

During the last year, HTS and its allies took advantage of several similar ceasefire agreements to reorganize their forces, fortify their areas and launch new attacks. This will most likely be the case with the new ceasefire.

Top IRGC Commander Confirms Iranian Missile Strike Was Aimed At “Military Machine”, Not Troops

The January 8 strike on US military bases in Iraq was “the starting point of a great operation” against the United States across the region, Brigadier General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh, Commander of the Aerospace Division of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said during a press conference on January 9.

The codename of the military effort is “Operation Martyr Soleimani”.

“The strikes were not meant to cause fatalities. We intended to deliver a blow to the enemy’s military machine,” Brigadier General Hajizadeh said.

The commander of IRGC’s Aerospace Division stated that the IRGC fired 13 missiles at the US bases in IRaq, but had actually prepared several hundred for launch.

According to them, if there was the goal to cause casualties, Iran would target the facilities used to accommodate the US forces or their deployment centers.

“We were able to plan the operation in a way to kill 500 [US forces] in the first stage and if they responded [to our strike], they would have lost 4,000-5,000 [troops] in the second and third stages.”

LNA Launches Series Of Airstrikes On GNA Forces, Despite De-Escalation Efforts

The Libyan National Army (LNA) launched late on January 8 a series of airstrikes on forces loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA), despite ongoing international effort to de-escalate the tension in the country.

According to several Libyan sources, warplanes supporting the LNA targeted GNA positions and equipment in the city of Misrata, the towns of Qurayn and Tawergha as well as in the capital, Tripoli.

Several videos of the airstrikes show that precision-guided munitions were used. This suggests that combat drones of the UAE, a key backer of the LNA, were behind the airstrikes.

The airstrikes came amid international efforts to de-escalate the situation in Libya. Presidents of Russia and Turkey called for a ceasefire following a summit in Ankara. Algeria is also promoting a ceasefire initiative, according to several sources.

LNA Commander-in-Chief Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar still has an opportunity to go on with the “decisive” attack he launched on Tripoli last December. The ceasefire regime promoted by Turkey and Russia is expected to belaunched on January 12.

Pope renews call for global pact promoting ‘new humanism’ in address to Vatican diplomats

When the Vatican launched the Global Education Pact back in September, Pope Francis omitted any reference to the prerogatives of parents as the primary educators of their children.

ROME, January 9, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — In a renewed and enthusiastic endorsement of globalism in 2020, Pope Francis today repeated his call for international and religious leaders to sign a “Global Education Pact” in May at the Vatican, saying it is all the more urgent in light of the sexual abuse crisis.

In his annual New Year’s audience with the diplomatic corps accredited to the Holy See, the Pope looked back at key events of 2019, including last February’s Vatican sex abuse summit.

He told diplomats that “given the gravity of the harm involved [in the sexual abuse crisis], it becomes all the more urgent for adults not to abdicate their proper educational responsibilities, but to carry out those responsibilities with greater zeal, in order to guide young people to spiritual, human and social maturity.”

“For this reason,” the Pope continued, “I have planned a worldwide event to take place on 14 May next with the theme: Reinventing the Global Compact on Education.”

When he launched the initiative last September, Pope Francis said that “a global educational pact is needed to educate us in universal solidarity and a new humanism.”

A Vatican-backed website to promote the pact added: “Educating young people in fraternity, in learning to overcome divisions and conflicts, promote hospitality, justice and peace: Pope Francis has invited everyone who cares about the education of the young generation to sign a Global Pact, to create a global change of mentality through education.”

Citing his September 2019 message for the launch, in his address to diplomats on Thursday, the Pope explained that: “This gathering is meant to ‘rekindle our commitment to and with young people, renewing our passion for a more open and inclusive education, including patient listening, constructive dialogue and better mutual understanding.’”

“‘Never before has there been such need to unite our efforts in a broad educational alliance, to form mature individuals capable of overcoming division and antagonism, and to restore the fabric of relationships for the sake of a more fraternal humanity,’” he said.

Repeating Hillary Clinton’s favorite aphorism, “It takes a village to raise a child,” Pope Francis asserted the need to create an “educational village” to face new challenges.

“All change, like the epochal change we are now experiencing, calls for a process of education and the creation of an educational village capable of forming a network of open and human relationships,” he said.
