These are just some of the alternative scenarios that have formed a long running debate among Second World War historians and enthusiasts over what might have affected the outcome of the battle, which took place between May and October 1940.

Mathematicians from the University of York have developed a new model to explore what the impact of changes to Luftwaffe tactics would actually have been. Their approach uses statistical modelling to calculate how the Battle might have played out if history had followed one of several alternative courses.

The researchers say that the method could now be used as a tool to investigate other historical controversies and unrealised possibilities, giving us a deeper understanding of events such as the Battle of the Atlantic (the longest continuous military campaign of the Second World War).

The statistical technique is called "weighted bootstrapping" and the computer simulation is a bit like taking a ball for the events of each day of the Battle of Britain and placing them in a lotto machine. Balls are then drawn, read and replaced to create thousands of alternative sets of days' fighting, but in a different order, and perhaps with some days appearing more than once or not at all.

The researchers then repeated the process to test out the Battle "what ifs," making some days more or less likely to be chosen, depending on how a protagonist (such as Hitler) would have changed their decisions had they been using different tactics.

Co-author of the paper, Dr Jamie Wood from the Department of Mathematics at the University of York, said: "The weighted bootstrap technique allowed us to model alternative campaigns in which the Luftwaffe prolongs or contracts the different phases of the battle and varies its targets.

"The Luftwaffe would only have been able to make the necessary bases in France available to launch an air attack on Britain in June at the earliest, so our alternative campaign brings forward the air campaign by three weeks. We tested the impact of this and the other counterfactuals by varying the probabilities with which we choose individual days."

The results provide statistical backing to a change in tactics that several historians have argued could have brought the Luftwaffe victory in the summer of 1940: The simulations suggested that if they had started the campaign earlier and focused on bombing airfields, the RAF might have been defeated, paving the way for a German land invasion.

According to the mathematical model, the impact of these two changes would have been dramatic. Although it is impossible to estimate what the real statistical chances of an RAF victory were in July 1940, the study suggests that whatever Britain's prospects, an earlier start and a focused targeting of airfields would have shifted the battle significantly in the Germans' favour.

For example, had the likelihood of a British victory in the actual battle been 50%, these two tactical changes would have reduced it to less than 10%. If the real probability of British victory was 98%, the same changes would have reduced this to just 34%.

Co-author of the paper, Professor Niall Mackay from the Department of Mathematics at the University of York, said: "Weighted bootstrapping can provide a natural and intuitive tool for historians to investigate unrealised possibilities, informing historical controversies and debates.

"It demonstrates just how finely-balanced the outcomes of some of the biggest moments of history were. Even when we use the actual days' events of the battle, make a small change of timing or emphasis to the arrangement of those days and things might have turned out very differently.

New York Bar Association Calls on Congress to Launch Investigation Into Attorney General Bill Barr

The New York City Bar Association is once again attacking US Attorney General Bill Barr.

The New York City Bar Association on Wednesday called on Congress to launch an investigation into Barr’s conduct, saying his public statements threaten “public confidence in the fair and impartial administration of justice.”

“These public statements by Mr. Barr also contravene the norms applicable to his office and warrant further investigation by Congress as part of an inquiry into Mr. Barr’s conduct as Attorney General more generally,” the left-wing group wrote in a 6-page letter addressed to Pelosi, McCarthy, McConnell and Schumer.

The group also criticized Barr’s October speech at Notre Dame University where he touted our founders for believing in God.

Barr said, “the founding generation … believed that the Judeo-Christian moral system corresponds to the true nature of man” and that “Judeo-Christian moral standards are the ultimate utilitarian rules for human conduct.”

Perhaps the New York City Bar Association prefers Sharia Law over the US Constitution which is the best document of freedom ever written and no doubt was inspired by biblical scripture.

The bar association also cited Barr’s speech given at the Federalist Society’s National Convention a few months ago where he blasted the radical left.

The New York Bar Association attacked Barr in October and called on him to recuse himself from ‘Ukraine-related matters.’

“If he fails to do so, he should resign or, failing that, be subject to sanctions, including possible removal, by Congress,” the bar association said in a previous statement.

The NYC Bar said that since Bill Barr was mentioned in the transcript of Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, he should not be allowed to investigate anything related to Ukraine, including Crowdstrike and the Biden crime family.

Bill Barr appointed US Attorney from Connecticut John Durham to investigate the origins of Spygate — No wonder why the Trump-hating group wants Congress to harass Barr with an investigation.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said they have intelligence information from multiple sources that a Ukrainian jet was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile on Wednesday morning, Reuters reported citing the premier's speech at a news conference in Ottawa.

"We have intelligence from multiple sources, including our allies and our own intelligence. The intelligence indicates that the plane was shot down by an Iranian surface to air missile. This may well have been unintentional", Trudeau said.

He, however, did not elaborate on the particulars of the intelligence Canada possesses.

Trudeau was also asked multiple times about how much responsibility the United States should bear for the crashed aircraft in terms of the killing of Iran's top military commander Qasem Soleimani, but he answered that it was soon to be apportioning blame for the crash or drawing any conclusions.

He added that Iran was committed to continuing dialogue with Canada. Tehran indicated it would keep black boxes in Iran but was open to allowing Canadian consular officials into the country to help the families of the victims, Trudeau said.

ORINDA, Calif. — On Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at about 6:30 PM, Detectives from the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff arrested 54-year-old Kyle Ann Wood at her home in Pleasant Hill.

The Lafayette Police Department, assisted by the Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division, recently began an investigation into Wood after receiving reports of alleged inappropriate and unlawful relationships between Wood and two minors. The crimes occurred between 1996-1998. The victims were students at Acalanes High School where Wood was a teacher.

Wood is currently a teacher at Miramonte High School in Orinda.

The Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office filed felony sex charges against Wood. She was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility and is being held in lieu of $150,000 bail.

IRS Audits Plummet To Lowest Level In Four Decades

Individual US taxpayers are half as likely to get audited than they were in 2010, according to the Wall Street Journal, which notes that IRS tax enforcement has fallen to the lowest level in at least four decades.In FY 2019, the agency audited just 0.45% of all personal income-tax returns, down from 0.59% in 2018 - marking eight straight years of declining reviews. The IRS budget is about 20% below the 2010 peak in inflation-adjusted dollars, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

During that time, Congress has given the agency more responsibility, including the implementation of the 2010 health care law and the 2017 tax law.

Russia Announces New Ceasefire In Idlib

Russian and Turkey reached a new ceasefire on Idlib de-escalation zone in Syria’s northwestern region, Maj. Gen. Yuri Borenkov, commander of the Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria, announced late on January 9.

“In accordance with the agreements reached with the Turkish side, a ceasefire regime was introduced in the Idlib de-escalation zone from 02.00 pm Moscow time [11:00 GMT] on January 9,” RT quoted the Russian commander as saying.

LNA Launches Series Of Airstrikes On GNA Forces, Despite De-Escalation Efforts

The Libyan National Army (LNA) launched late on January 8 a series of airstrikes on forces loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA), despite ongoing international effort to de-escalate the tension in the country.

Wu, 51, founded private insurer Anbang in 2004, and in 2014, bought the famed Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. It also has significant stakes in Chinese banks and property developers.

Wu stood trial at the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court in March and admitted at the time that he played a role in a fundraising scheme that brought in more than 723 billion yuan ($115.2 billion) from unlawful dealings. He initially contested charges against him but later asked for leniency.

He has also been accused of misleading investors and diverting 65.25 billion yuan ($10.4 billion) to companies that he controlled, and funneled funds into overseas investment and personal spending.

Regulators seized control of Anbang in February. The company boasted of extensive ties to China's Communist Party, and Wu himself is married to the granddaughter of Deng Xiaoping, China's former paramount leader.

Wu had links to US presidential adviser Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of President Donald Trump, and reportedly met with Wu in November 2016, shortly after Trump won the election.

Both Kushner and Wu are real-estate investors, and Kushner's family business, Kushner Companies, were in talks on a $4 billion deal with Anbang last March. However, the deal fell through shortly after news broke following scrutiny from US lawmakers.

Chronograph seconds hand: The scale for the central chronograph seconds hand

runs around the edge of the dial.

Minute and hour counters: The subdial at 12 o’clock has two hands, which run continuously and show the elapsed time on a 12-hour and a 60-minute scale. The hour and

minute counters can be read like a standard analogue time display. In other words, one

revolution of the minute counter is equal to 60 minutes, and one revolution of the hour

USING THE CHRONOGRAPH

Start: To start the chronograph, press the start/stop push-button.

Flyback: You can start recording a new time immediately, even when the chronograph

is running. Simply depress the reset/flyback push-button fully as far as it will go. All

three chronograph hands are reset to zero, and a new measurement is started as soon

as the push-button is released.

Stop: To stop the running chronograph, press the start/stop push-button.

Reset: Depress the reset/flyback push-button fully as far as it will go. This will reset

all the chronograph hands to zero.

Aggregate time recording: You can add stop times together by pressing the start/

stop push-button again after the first measurement instead of the reset/flyback pushbutton.
