CARNELIAN (kɑːrˈniːliən) is a type of chalcedony that gets an orange coloring from inclusions of iron oxide. Its chemical composition is SiO2 Fe2O3. It is usually found in Siberia, India, Germany, and Brazil. On the Mohs scale, carnelian ranks between a 6 and a 7.
Carnelian is very similar to a mineral called sard. They share a chemical composition, but sard is harder and typically has a darker red color. Many gemologists do not distinguish between the two.
Use of carnelian traces back to before the bronze age. It has been ornately carved by the ancient Cretans, Egyptians, Romans, Etruscans, Assyrians, and Phonecians.
