State Forces Citizens to Pay for ‘Stargazing Permit’ to View Night Sky in Public Parks—Yes, Really

New York — In the Land of the Free, if you do not pay the State in the form of a permit before you attempt to sell a product or service to a willing customer, you can and will be extorted, kidnapped and caged, with extreme prejudice. While many folks stand behind permits for selling, one permit in New York that has nothing to do with commerce, has garnered the scrutiny of the Free thought Project. If citizens of the state wish to look up at the sky and view the stars at one of New York’s public parks, they will first have to obtain a “Stargazing permit.” Seriously.

Light pollution across the state of New York makes it hard for folks in highly populated areas to view the night sky. So, people who wish to gaze upon the stars at night have to drive many miles away to remote areas. Many of these remote areas are located in taxpayer-funded state parks.

In their efforts to squeeze every dime they can from the tax farm, bureaucrats in New York have devised a scheme to extort citizens who wish to use public parks to gaze upon the night sky. This extortion comes in the form of a $35.00 “Stargazing Permit.” If you are from out of state and wish to gaze upon the night sky from one of these locations that fee jumps to $60.

If you think that you will do anything else besides look at the night sky with this permit, think again. Within the regulations, bureaucrats explicitly point out that the “Permit allows after sunset parking for stargazing only, valid January 1 – December 31.”

Pompeo to meet with Zelensky in Ukraine amid impeachment trial

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet next week with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, a sit down that could coincide with Senate deliberations over whether to remove President Trump for his conduct toward Ukraine.

The State Department said Friday that Pompeo will meet with Zelensky on Thursday as part of a weeklong trip to Europe and Central Asia. He will also meet with the Ukrainian foreign minister and defense minister while in Kyiv and attend a wreath-laying ceremony to honor those who have died fighting Russia in the Donbass region.

Pompeo was originally scheduled to travel to Ukraine in early January, but he postponed that trip amid a flare-up in tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

The visit will be closely watched given the central role Ukraine plays in Trump's impeachment.

The House impeached Trump last month on articles of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress after alleging he tied a White House meeting and security aid for Ukraine to the country announcing investigations into his political rivals.

The impeachment inquiry was triggered by a whistleblower complaint over a July 25 phone call in which Trump urged Zelensky to "look into" former Vice President Joe Biden and an unfounded conspiracy theory related to the 2016 election.

Pompeo has come under scrutiny for his role in the controversy after he admitted he was on the July 25 call and after U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland testified that "everyone was in the loop" on the Ukraine matter.

Democrats have subpoenaed Pompeo for documents related to the impeachment proceedings, but the secretary of State has said he will testify in the Senate only if the law requires him to.

In addition to his stop in Ukraine, Pompeo will meet with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in London on Wednesday, followed by meetings in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Pompeo is also scheduled to meet with the president of Belarus, a development that comes as the Trump administration is said to be considering adding the country to its list of nations covered by a travel ban.

New Swedish Islamist Party Wants to Grant Muslims ‘Special Minority’ Status

A newly formed Swedish political party has proposed making all Muslims in Sweden a “special minority”, claiming that Muslims suffer daily from violence and verbal attacks.

The Nyans Party say they want Muslims in Sweden to be recognised in the same way the country recognises Sami peoples and Jews as special minorities, saying that they want so-called Islamophic crimes to receive a special classification under the law, SVT reports.

The party chairman Mikail Yüksel, who was kicked out of the Centre Party for his association with the ultra-nationalist Turkish Grey Wolves, told the broadcaster: “Sweden’s Muslims daily experience both physical and verbal attacks of a racist nature.”

“It is not the veil that must be fought, it is the oppression. At the same time, parents have the right to raise their children based on their culture and religion,” he added.

When his prior association with the Grey Wolves was raised, Yüksel said that he abstained from Turkish politics saying: “I meet people with different political opinions, but that doesn’t mean I share their opinions.”

Around 60 people are said to have attended a meeting for the party in the Stockholm suburb of Kista, the same area that was rocked by a bombing earlier this week.

The party, which was formed in November of last year, will not be the first attempt to create a Muslim-oriented political party in Sweden.

In 2017, the Swedish electoral authority refused to register the Jasin party after it was revealed that radical Islamists had largely taken over the party. Despite its spokesman claiming the party was for all Swedes, he admitted that many members were supportive of enacting sharia in Sweden.

Several other countries across Europe have also seen the rise of similar parties, the most successful among them being the Denk Party in the Netherlands which won three seats in the Dutch parliament in 2017.

GOP Leaders Hit Nadler For Holding Up A Ban On Fentanyl During Impeachment Trial

Republican Oregon Rep. Greg Walden believes House Democrats’ “obsession” with impeaching President Donald Trump is distracting them from passing a temporary ban on fentanyl substances.

Democratic New York Rep. Jerry Nadler is holding up legislation preventing the distribution of a substance health officials say is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths, Walden said in a statement Friday to the Daily Caller News Foundation. The Oregon Republican said time is of the essence on this matter.

“Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee’s partisan obsession with impeachment is preventing us from taking common-sense action to extend a critical tool for law enforcement to combat the trafficking of fentanyl-related substances,” Walden said.

He added: “The Senate has passed an extension, but the House has yet to act. The House leadership needs to put the Senate bill on the floor next week so this critical authority does not lapse.”

Nadler spokesman Daniel Schwarz told the DCNF that Nadler is aware of the legislation.

Six Dead, Suspect Arrested in Germany Shooting

Six people were killed in a shooting in a small 5,200-resident southern German town Friday, with police arresting a German citizen suspect at the scene.

In addition to those reported as dead, several others are said to have been injured including two seriously in the shooting at a hotel in the town of Rot am See, Baden-Württemberg.

According to reports in German media, a suspect of the killings has been arrested and he was known to the victims, with outlets including Die Welt reporting personal relationships between the killer and the deceased may be a motive, although no definitive answers have yet been given by police. The victims are all thought to be members of the same family.

Local officers are expected to give a press conference on the events that took place shortly after midday, on Friday night.

California City Becomes First to Ban Background Checks on Rental Housing and Apartments

You read the title right. This might be one of the most absurd things that we’ve ever reported here at The DC Patriot.

I grew up as my parents owned rental properties like duplexes, and rent houses. I can’t imagine my parents not being able to do background checks on who they rented to, this is absolutely insane.

Oakland became the first city in California to ban criminal background checks in most housing applications for private and other rental units under a measure adopted by the City Council on Tuesday.

I’m not honestly sure if there is anyone else in another state that’s dumb enough to have banned these, so this may very well be the first time in the nation’s history. It’s also once again liberal California protecting the rights of criminals over law abiding citizens.

The council unanimously passed a “fair chance housing” ordinance that bars landlords from conducting criminal background checks on prospective tenants. The Berkeley City Council is expected to vote on a similar measure in February.

“This ordinance is about making sure returning community members have equal opportunities they deserve to successfully reintegrate into our community, and this begins with a roof over your head,” said Councilwoman Nikki Fortunato Bas, a co-sponsor of the measure.

Rights group details Israel’s recent torture of Palestinian detainees

A Palestinian rights group has published details of what it describes as “the systematic use of torture and ill-treatment” against Palestinian detainees in Al-Mascobiyya interrogation centre.

Prisoners’ rights organisation Addameer yesterday revealed “hard evidence” of the “crime of torture and ill-treatment” committed against Palestinians in recent months, describing “the cruel physical and physiological torture and ill-treatment” that a “number of detainees were subjected to”.

As reported by Addameer, towards the end of 2019 Israel’s Shin Bet “subjected a number of detainees at Al-Mascobiyya interrogation centre to severe physical and psychological torture”, in an attempt “to extract confessions and force them into self-incrimination”.

Addameer stated that it is the legal representative for around 50 cases of the detainees in interrogations, with the detainees including “university students” and “human rights defenders”.

Palestinian prisoners can be interrogated for up to 75 days without being charged, and also prevented from seeing a lawyer for up to 60 days.

According to the report, “the torture methods used against those detainees resulted in visible marks, and bruises on their bodies”, while several

[detainees] were not able to walk or even move due to the harsh beatings and stress positions they were subjected to.

Yet doctors at the interrogation centre clinic failed to document these marks, and even “approved the detainees’ physical capability to be sent back to interrogations”.

Addameer revealed that the Israeli courts only accepted one request by lawyers to obtain pictures showing torture marks of a single prisoner, rejecting such requests in other cases.

According to the rights group, “the role played by the interrogators, the doctors, and the judges at both courts were complementary to each other, which was evidently revealed in the court sessions and its protocols.”

Despite the absolute prohibition of torture under international conventions, Addameer concluded, “torture against Palestinian detainees is systematic and widespread in Israeli occupation prisons and interrogation centres.”

US seeking to carve out Sunni state as its influence in Iraq wanes

With Shia parties pressuring American troops to leave, Washington wants to create an autonomous region around Anbar to maintain its presence

Backed into a corner and influence waning, the United States has in recent weeks been promoting a plan to create an autonomous Sunni region in western Iraq, officials from both countries told Middle East Eye.

The US efforts, the officials say, come in response to Shia Iraqi parties’ attempts to expel American troops from their country.

Iraq represents a strategic land bridge between Iran and its allies in Syria, Lebanon and Palestine.

Establishing a US-controlled Sunni buffer zone in western Iraq would deprive Iran of using land routes into Syria and prevent it from reaching the eastern shores of the Mediterranean.

For Washington, the idea of carving out a Sunni region dates back to a 2007 proposition by Joe Biden, who is now vying to be the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate.

SecDef to Congress: Let the Pentagon Dump Old Gear to Fund New Weapons

The Defense Department is "doubling down" on hypersonic technology and other cutting-edge weapons, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Friday, and it's continuing to clean house on older systems to fund the investment.

Esper told an audience at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., that the Pentagon had nearly doubled its long-term investment in hypersonic weapons, with almost $5 billion allocated in the fiscal 2020 budget alone and an "even stronger" fiscal 2021 budget request in planning.

"We have significantly ramped up flight testing and other experimentation so we can accelerate the delivery of this capability in all its forms," he said.

And to make that happen, he said, the DoD will need to keep cutting. Esper said that will mean finding efficiencies within the department, as well as continuing to divest of legacy systems that are no longer relevant to the current fight.

"I've been telling the Pentagon for two-and-a-half years now that our budgets are what they are. They're not going to get any better, and so we have to be much better stewards of the taxpayer's dollar. And that means … divesting of legacy things, divesting of things that don't deliver a high [return on investment]," he said.

As Army secretary, Esper presided over a service "night court" divestment effort that officials say delivered more than $30 billion in savings. He was confirmed as defense secretary in July.

He acknowledged that Congress sometimes puts up its own roadblocks to divestment.

"Congress is fully behind [budget stewardship], but then there's that moment of time when it hits their backyard and you have to work your way through that," he said. "We have to make that leap."

Esper emphasized the National Defense Strategy's focus on China foremost, and Russia second, as near-peer competitors and impetus for new warfighting concepts and investments.

"We have a lot of support from Congress, and we have to bridge this gap now between what was Cold War-era systems and the counterinsurgency, low-intensity fight of the last 18 years, and make this leap into great power competition with Russia and China – China specifically," he said. "And that requires, again, a whole new way of thinking."

Hypersonic weapons, which include missiles that move at five times the speed of sound, have been a priority for all the military services.

In 2018, as secretary of the Army, Esper told reporters he wanted the service to develop and field the weapons by 2028.

"The United States had the early breakthrough in this field, and now we need to double down on that and accelerate our efforts," Esper said Friday. "I think it's another arrow in our quiver that we need to have and we need to develop and modify. Based on the needs of the combatant commanders, we will deploy them in close consultation with our allies and partners to make sure we have that technology available to us."

Trump meets Imran Khan in Davos, offers ‘help’ on Kashmir issue

Interestingly, Trump volunteered the US’s “help” even before Khan spoke — without any prompting or provocation.

Addressing the media with Khan at his side, Trump said, “We are talking about Kashmir and in relation to what is going on with Pakistan and India and if we can help — we certainly will be helping. We’ve been following that and watching it very very closely.”

Khan said it was the US which will be able to help resolve the issue, and said that he had pinned his hopes on the US President.

This is the fourth time that Trump has made such an offer - each time, India has rejected his proposal.

His latest offer comes in the backdrop of talks between Delhi and Washington about Trump possibly visiting India this year, anytime between February and September.

On July 22, 2019, Trump, with Khan by his side in Washington, said that he would “love to be a mediator” in the Kashmir issue. A month later, Trump stunned New Delhi by claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked him to mediate on Kashmir. The US President looked on as Modi made clear that all issues with Pakistan are bilateral, and India doesn’t bother any other country about them.

Then in September, Trump said he had discussed Kashmir with the leaders of India and Pakistan during his meetings with them and had offered to help with “arbitration or mediation” to the two “nuclear-armed neighbours” who have to “work it out”.

“You look at the two gentlemen heading those two countries, two good friends of mine. I said, fellows work it out, just work it out. Those are two nuclear countries, gotta work it out,” he had said.

India has always maintained that Kashmir is a bilateral issue, and no third party has any role in it. Pakistan has been trying to internationalise the Kashmir issue after India withdrew the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, but New Delhi has asserted the abrogation of Article 370 was its internal matter.

Apple Is Quietly Expanding Its Artificial Intelligence Ecosystem

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) recently acquired Xnor.ai, a Seattle-based start-up that develops low-power, edge-based artificial intelligence tools. Apple didn't disclose the terms of the deal, but GeekWire claimed that the deal was worth about $200 million.

Apple reportedly paid a similar amount for Turi, another Seattle-based company that specializes in machine learning and AI, in 2016. Apple also recently acquired British AI start-up Spectral Edge for an undisclosed sum.

But those acquisitions are just the tip of Apple's AI iceberg. Apple has acquired over 20 AI companies since 2010, according to CB Insights, surpassing the number of AI acquisitions by Alphabet's (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). Apple also poached Google's AI and Search chief John Giannandrea in 2018.

All these moves indicate that Apple is aggressively expanding its AI ecosystem, even though its applications are less visible than Google and Facebook's implementation of AI for targeted ads, or Amazon's use of AI for sorting product listings. Hezbollah Destroys Militants’ Tunnels On Syrian-Lebanese Broder

Hezbollah destroyed on January 24 a series of tunnels in the Eastern Qalamun region on the Syrian-Lebanese border, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
