New York — In the Land of the Free, if you do not pay the State in the form of a permit before you attempt to sell a product or service to a willing customer, you can and will be extorted, kidnapped and caged, with extreme prejudice. While many folks stand behind permits for selling, one permit in New York that has nothing to do with commerce, has garnered the scrutiny of the Free thought Project. If citizens of the state wish to look up at the sky and view the stars at one of New York’s public parks, they will first have to obtain a “Stargazing permit.” Seriously.

Light pollution across the state of New York makes it hard for folks in highly populated areas to view the night sky. So, people who wish to gaze upon the stars at night have to drive many miles away to remote areas. Many of these remote areas are located in taxpayer-funded state parks.

In their efforts to squeeze every dime they can from the tax farm, bureaucrats in New York have devised a scheme to extort citizens who wish to use public parks to gaze upon the night sky. This extortion comes in the form of a $35.00 “Stargazing Permit.” If you are from out of state and wish to gaze upon the night sky from one of these locations that fee jumps to $60.

If you think that you will do anything else besides look at the night sky with this permit, think again. Within the regulations, bureaucrats explicitly point out that the “Permit allows after sunset parking for stargazing only, valid January 1 – December 31.”

Pompeo to meet with Zelensky in Ukraine amid impeachment trial

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet next week with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, a sit down that could coincide with Senate deliberations over whether to remove President Trump for his conduct toward Ukraine.

The State Department said Friday that Pompeo will meet with Zelensky on Thursday as part of a weeklong trip to Europe and Central Asia. He will also meet with the Ukrainian foreign minister and defense minister while in Kyiv and attend a wreath-laying ceremony to honor those who have died fighting Russia in the Donbass region.

Pompeo was originally scheduled to travel to Ukraine in early January, but he postponed that trip amid a flare-up in tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

The visit will be closely watched given the central role Ukraine plays in Trump's impeachment.

The House impeached Trump last month on articles of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress after alleging he tied a White House meeting and security aid for Ukraine to the country announcing investigations into his political rivals.

The impeachment inquiry was triggered by a whistleblower complaint over a July 25 phone call in which Trump urged Zelensky to "look into" former Vice President Joe Biden and an unfounded conspiracy theory related to the 2016 election.

Pompeo has come under scrutiny for his role in the controversy after he admitted he was on the July 25 call and after U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland testified that "everyone was in the loop" on the Ukraine matter.

Democrats have subpoenaed Pompeo for documents related to the impeachment proceedings, but the secretary of State has said he will testify in the Senate only if the law requires him to.

In addition to his stop in Ukraine, Pompeo will meet with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in London on Wednesday, followed by meetings in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Pompeo is also scheduled to meet with the president of Belarus, a development that comes as the Trump administration is said to be considering adding the country to its list of nations covered by a travel ban.

New Swedish Islamist Party Wants to Grant Muslims ‘Special Minority’ Status

A newly formed Swedish political party has proposed making all Muslims in Sweden a “special minority”, claiming that Muslims suffer daily from violence and verbal attacks.

The Nyans Party say they want Muslims in Sweden to be recognised in the same way the country recognises Sami peoples and Jews as special minorities, saying that they want so-called Islamophic crimes to receive a special classification under the law, SVT reports.

The party chairman Mikail Yüksel, who was kicked out of the Centre Party for his association with the ultra-nationalist Turkish Grey Wolves, told the broadcaster: “Sweden’s Muslims daily experience both physical and verbal attacks of a racist nature.”

“It is not the veil that must be fought, it is the oppression. At the same time, parents have the right to raise their children based on their culture and religion,” he added.

When his prior association with the Grey Wolves was raised, Yüksel said that he abstained from Turkish politics saying: “I meet people with different political opinions, but that doesn’t mean I share their opinions.”

Around 60 people are said to have attended a meeting for the party in the Stockholm suburb of Kista, the same area that was rocked by a bombing earlier this week.

The party, which was formed in November of last year, will not be the first attempt to create a Muslim-oriented political party in Sweden.

In 2017, the Swedish electoral authority refused to register the Jasin party after it was revealed that radical Islamists had largely taken over the party. Despite its spokesman claiming the party was for all Swedes, he admitted that many members were supportive of enacting sharia in Sweden.

Several other countries across Europe have also seen the rise of similar parties, the most successful among them being the Denk Party in the Netherlands which won three seats in the Dutch parliament in 2017.

Republican Oregon Rep. Greg Walden believes House Democrats’ “obsession” with impeaching President Donald Trump is distracting them from passing a temporary ban on fentanyl substances.

Six Dead, Suspect Arrested in Germany Shooting

Six people were killed in a shooting in a small 5,200-resident southern German town Friday, with police arresting a German citizen suspect at the scene.

In addition to those reported as dead, several others are said to have been injured including two seriously in the shooting at a hotel in the town of Rot am See, Baden-Württemberg.

According to reports in German media, a suspect of the killings has been arrested and he was known to the victims, with outlets including Die Welt reporting personal relationships between the killer and the deceased may be a motive, although no definitive answers have yet been given by police. The victims are all thought to be members of the same family.

Local officers are expected to give a press conference on the events that took place shortly after midday, on Friday night.

California City Becomes First to Ban Background Checks on Rental Housing and Apartments

You read the title right. This might be one of the most absurd things that we’ve ever reported here at The DC Patriot.

I grew up as my parents owned rental properties like duplexes, and rent houses. I can’t imagine my parents not being able to do background checks on who they rented to, this is absolutely insane.

Oakland became the first city in California to ban criminal background checks in most housing applications for private and other rental units under a measure adopted by the City Council on Tuesday.

I’m not honestly sure if there is anyone else in another state that’s dumb enough to have banned these, so this may very well be the first time in the nation’s history. It’s also once again liberal California protecting the rights of criminals over law abiding citizens.

The council unanimously passed a “fair chance housing” ordinance that bars landlords from conducting criminal background checks on prospective tenants. The Berkeley City Council is expected to vote on a similar measure in February.

“This ordinance is about making sure returning community members have equal opportunities they deserve to successfully reintegrate into our community, and this begins with a roof over your head,” said Councilwoman Nikki Fortunato Bas, a co-sponsor of the measure.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham revealed on her show Wednesday night that last May, the New York Times quashed a story about a White House meeting that took place in January 2016 between Obama administration officials, Ukrainian officials, and the alleged whistleblower, which addressed Hunter Biden's position on the board of Burisma Holdings.

According to Ingraham, she obtained a chain of State Department emails from May 2019 between New York Times journalist Ken Vogel and State Department official Kate Schilling, when Vogel was seeking comment on his story about the White House meeting between the whistleblower, Ukrainian officials, and the Obama administration.

In the email, Vogel wrote, "We are going to report that [State Department official] Elizabeth Zentos attended a meeting at the White House on 1/19/2016 with Ukrainian prosecutors and embassy officials as well as … [redacted] from the NSC … the subjects discussed included efforts within the United State government to support prosecutions, in Ukraine and the United Kingdom, of Burisma Holdings, … and concerns that Hunter Biden's position with the company could complicate such efforts."

Ingraham said this email was forwarded to Schilling's colleagues Zentos and George Kent, who appears to have been a source for Vogel. The conversation ended on May 3, with the State Department declining to comment. Kent, who was stationed in Kyiv at the time, told House investigators during an impeachment hearing last year that he raised concerns in 2015 about Hunter Biden holding a position with Burisma but was rebuffed by a Joe Biden aide.

Using archived Obama White House visitor logs, Ingraham said her team was able to corroborate details of the January 2016 meeting, showing on the screen the names of Ukrainian officials checked into the White House by Ciaramella, who was Ukraine director on the National Security Council.

It's previously been established that the Obama State Department had raised "red flags" about Hunter Biden's position on the board of Burisma. But, the story about the White House meeting was never published and Ingraham reached out to Vogel and the New York Times to find out why.

Ingraham got a reply from the New York Times director of communications who told her that "Vogel's request for comment was consistent with their news-gathering process." Basically, a nonresponse.

Prisoners’ rights organisation Addameer yesterday revealed “hard evidence” of the “crime of torture and ill-treatment” committed against Palestinians in recent months, describing “the cruel physical and physiological torture and ill-treatment” that a “number of detainees were subjected to”.

As reported by Addameer, towards the end of 2019 Israel’s Shin Bet “subjected a number of detainees at Al-Mascobiyya interrogation centre to severe physical and psychological torture”, in an attempt “to extract confessions and force them into self-incrimination”.

Addameer stated that it is the legal representative for around 50 cases of the detainees in interrogations, with the detainees including “university students” and “human rights defenders”.

Palestinian prisoners can be interrogated for up to 75 days without being charged, and also prevented from seeing a lawyer for up to 60 days.

According to the report, “the torture methods used against those detainees resulted in visible marks, and bruises on their bodies”, while several

[detainees] were not able to walk or even move due to the harsh beatings and stress positions they were subjected to.

Yet doctors at the interrogation centre clinic failed to document these marks, and even “approved the detainees’ physical capability to be sent back to interrogations”.

Addameer revealed that the Israeli courts only accepted one request by lawyers to obtain pictures showing torture marks of a single prisoner, rejecting such requests in other cases.

According to the rights group, “the role played by the interrogators, the doctors, and the judges at both courts were complementary to each other, which was evidently revealed in the court sessions and its protocols.”

Despite the absolute prohibition of torture under international conventions, Addameer concluded, “torture against Palestinian detainees is systematic and widespread in Israeli occupation prisons and interrogation centres.”

Inside a Trump-era purge of military scientists at a legendary think tank

They’re members of a prestigious academic panel with top-secret clearances who’ve advised the Pentagon on some of America’s most vexing national security issues since the Cold War. Over 60 years, they’ve won 11 Nobel prizes and conducted hundreds of government studies.

The advisory group, known as Jason, is a team of some 60 of America’s top physicists and scientists who spend each summer in La Jolla, California, conducting studies commissioned by the Pentagon and other U.S. government agencies.

On March 28, Trump appointee Michael Griffin – the Pentagon’s chief technology officer – unexpectedly moved to terminate the group.

Jason’s supporters, backed into a corner, managed to keep the group alive, temporarily for now, for eight more months. Democrats in Congress are trying to get Jason funded through a different Pentagon office not run by Griffin, but it’s unclear whether the Republican-controlled Senate will go along.

The Jasons, drawn from America’s elite scientists, are hand-picked by the existing membership. They are known for fiercely guarding their independence and, at times, ruffling feathers.

Named after the leader of the Argonauts who sought the Golden Fleece in Greek mythology, they were formed after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first satellite to orbit Earth, in 1957. Fearing it was losing the space and technology war, the United States created the Jason program

Disbanding the program would have had a ripple effect across U.S. government agencies that use Jason research. For the summer of 2019, the Jasons had been asked to conduct 15 separate studies by seven government agencies.

At the last moment, Gordon-Hagerty’s agency managed to rush through an unorthodox paperwork maneuver: It published a formal notice of its intent to issue a contract for Jason later. That was enough to persuade Mitre to temporarily fund the program out of its own pocket.

Boeing Co. is marketing its new $10 billion loan deal with pricing in line with the company’s existing credit lines, according to people familiar with the matter. The loan, which would help the U.S. planemaker ease its growing financial strain, will have a margin of 100 basis points over the London interbank offered rate, the people said. Boeing will pay a 9 basis point ticking fee while it doesn’t draw the money, the people added. The debt will mature in two years and be structured as a delayed-draw term loan, which allows Boeing to access the funds at a later date, Bloomberg previously reported. Citigroup Inc. is leading the deal.

This pricing is in line with the planemaker’s most recent $9.5b revolving credit facilities signed in October. At Boeing’s current rating of A3 by Moody’s Investors Service and A- at S&P Global Ratings, the revolver costs 100 basis points over Libor if the company taps the credit line or requires a nine basis point facility fee if Boeing doesn’t. Both Moody’s and S&P are considering downgrading the company, which would knock it into the lowest tier of investment-grade rankings and raise its borrowing costs. Representatives from Citi and Boeing declined to comment.

The company is marketing the loan as it weighs another cut to production of its marquee 787 Dreamliner amid sluggish demand for its twin-aisle jet. The new loan is expected to wrap up this week, said the people. The lender group is expected to be smaller than that on its revolving facilities, they added. Around 35 lenders participated in Boeing’s existing credit lines. The $10 billion size of the new loan may increase if participation interest from banks exceeds the target size, the people said. Boeing has already borrowed $21.5 billion of new debt since the crash of its first Max planes in Indonesia in October 2018.

The fresh funding comes as Boeing contends with reimbursing customers, keeping suppliers afloat and maintaining about 400 newly built Max that it can’t deliver until global regulators clear the jet to fly. A production halt taking hold this month on the Max, which has been grounded since March, is a sign that its emergence from the crisis will be lengthy.

SecDef to Congress: Let the Pentagon Dump Old Gear to Fund New Weapons

The Defense Department is "doubling down" on hypersonic technology and other cutting-edge weapons, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Friday, and it's continuing to clean house on older systems to fund the investment.

Esper told an audience at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., that the Pentagon had nearly doubled its long-term investment in hypersonic weapons, with almost $5 billion allocated in the fiscal 2020 budget alone and an "even stronger" fiscal 2021 budget request in planning.

"We have significantly ramped up flight testing and other experimentation so we can accelerate the delivery of this capability in all its forms," he said.

And to make that happen, he said, the DoD will need to keep cutting. Esper said that will mean finding efficiencies within the department, as well as continuing to divest of legacy systems that are no longer relevant to the current fight.

"I've been telling the Pentagon for two-and-a-half years now that our budgets are what they are. They're not going to get any better, and so we have to be much better stewards of the taxpayer's dollar. And that means … divesting of legacy things, divesting of things that don't deliver a high [return on investment]," he said.

As Army secretary, Esper presided over a service "night court" divestment effort that officials say delivered more than $30 billion in savings. He was confirmed as defense secretary in July.

He acknowledged that Congress sometimes puts up its own roadblocks to divestment.

"Congress is fully behind [budget stewardship], but then there's that moment of time when it hits their backyard and you have to work your way through that," he said. "We have to make that leap."

Esper emphasized the National Defense Strategy's focus on China foremost, and Russia second, as near-peer competitors and impetus for new warfighting concepts and investments.

"We have a lot of support from Congress, and we have to bridge this gap now between what was Cold War-era systems and the counterinsurgency, low-intensity fight of the last 18 years, and make this leap into great power competition with Russia and China – China specifically," he said. "And that requires, again, a whole new way of thinking."

Hypersonic weapons, which include missiles that move at five times the speed of sound, have been a priority for all the military services.

In 2018, as secretary of the Army, Esper told reporters he wanted the service to develop and field the weapons by 2028.

"The United States had the early breakthrough in this field, and now we need to double down on that and accelerate our efforts," Esper said Friday. "I think it's another arrow in our quiver that we need to have and we need to develop and modify. Based on the needs of the combatant commanders, we will deploy them in close consultation with our allies and partners to make sure we have that technology available to us."

Trump meets Imran Khan in Davos, offers ‘help’ on Kashmir issue

Interestingly, Trump volunteered the US’s “help” even before Khan spoke — without any prompting or provocation.

Addressing the media with Khan at his side, Trump said, “We are talking about Kashmir and in relation to what is going on with Pakistan and India and if we can help — we certainly will be helping. We’ve been following that and watching it very very closely.”

Khan said it was the US which will be able to help resolve the issue, and said that he had pinned his hopes on the US President.

This is the fourth time that Trump has made such an offer - each time, India has rejected his proposal.

His latest offer comes in the backdrop of talks between Delhi and Washington about Trump possibly visiting India this year, anytime between February and September.

On July 22, 2019, Trump, with Khan by his side in Washington, said that he would “love to be a mediator” in the Kashmir issue. A month later, Trump stunned New Delhi by claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked him to mediate on Kashmir. The US President looked on as Modi made clear that all issues with Pakistan are bilateral, and India doesn’t bother any other country about them.

Then in September, Trump said he had discussed Kashmir with the leaders of India and Pakistan during his meetings with them and had offered to help with “arbitration or mediation” to the two “nuclear-armed neighbours” who have to “work it out”.

“You look at the two gentlemen heading those two countries, two good friends of mine. I said, fellows work it out, just work it out. Those are two nuclear countries, gotta work it out,” he had said.

India has always maintained that Kashmir is a bilateral issue, and no third party has any role in it. Pakistan has been trying to internationalise the Kashmir issue after India withdrew the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, but New Delhi has asserted the abrogation of Article 370 was its internal matter.

The irrational hatred that grew for Trump all around me lead me to believe something was truly wrong. Attempting to impeach a duly elected President months in to his first term? Insanity. Around October I found myself utterly lost and alone, friendless because if you live in the area I do in California and had the liberal group of friends I did, support for Potus was social suicide. I did not care. I had been alone before and I knew this would be another phase. Never, had I been excluded, attacked and ridiculed like I did that year. Plenty of people have pointed out that they don't work very well at all, and it's even worse than just leading to legitimate content being taken down. Having such a tool, means that it will be abused.
