The deadly virus originating out of the central Chinese city of Wuhan is making headlines, and well it should. There’s the potential for this new coronavirus to spread rapidly from China to the rest of Asia and the West.

The virus attacks victims’ immune systems, compromising their health and threatening their very existence. At this writing, there are over 600 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, with at least one in the state of Washington in the United States, and 17 deaths in China.

The Huawei Contagion

But there’s another high-risk contagion that has spread much further and deeper into many nations of the world, with very serious consequences as well. I’m talking about Huawei, of course, and its drive to be the main source of 5G telecommunication equipment for the world.

Democrat House Impeachment Manager Rep. Zoe Lofgren Admits Impeachment is All About the Election

House impeachment manager Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) admitted on Sunday during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” that impeachment is all about the 2020 election.

CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Rep. Lofgren why the Democrats rushed into impeachment rather than fighting the subpoenas in court.

Trump’s Deputy Counsel Patrick Philbin said on Saturday that the House Judiciary Committee must receive approval from the full House before proceeding with impeachment.

Philbin argued that since Pelosi directed various committees to begin impeachment proceedings with a press conference rather than a full House vote, the subpoenas sent to Trump officials were invalid.

The Democrats never even went to the courts to enforce subpoenas, instead, they made up a fake crime “Obstruction of Congress” and launched their shampeachment hearings.

The reason for this is because they want to blunt Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign or keep him off the ballot and Rep. Lofgren openly admitted that on Sunday.

“If we waited for three or four years, the election would be over and the issue would be almost moot,” Rep. Lofgren said.

The tyrannical Democrats want to abolish the Electoral College and ultimately get rid of elections and they aren’t even hiding it anymore.

On Wednesday Adam Schiff lectured America and said your vote doesn’t count because the ballot box cannot be trusted.

Your vote doesn’t count if you choose Trump.

“The President’s misconduct cannot be decided at the ballot box, for we cannot be assured that the vote will be fairly won,” Schiff said.

Death Toll From Rainstorms in Brazil Rises to 53

The number of people who have been injured stands at 12, while 19 people still remain missing as heavy rainstorms and intense flooding hit the southeastern part of the country earlier in the week, local Civil Defence officials stated.

On Sunday, 44 people were pronounced dead in the state of Minas Gerais, local authorities said, as quoted by G1 Globo News agency. It added that a state of emergency has been declared in 99 towns across the state.

Bodies of another nine victims have been found in the nearby state of Espirito Santo, the Civil Defence office added.

Not all victims have been identified yet, as they are buried under collapsed buildings or covered by landslides which resulted from intense storms and flooding.

According to officials, some 17,000 have been forced to leave their homes and find shelter in areas not affected by the flooding.

Previously, the National Institute of Meteorology declared that rainfall in the region has been the heaviest since records were first kept 110 years ago.

Large Explosion Rocks Turkish-Occupied City In Northern Aleppo. Casualties Reported

On January 25 eve, a booby-trapped car exploded in the Turkish-occupied city of Azaz in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo.

Opposition activists shared a video showing the moment when the explosive-laden car blew up near Azaz’s main fuel station. Other videos on social media showed the aftermath of the blast.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), eight civilians were killed and at least 20 others were injured as a result of the bombing.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, some opposition activists said, as usual, that the attack was plotted by Kurdish forces.

Azaz explosion is the most recent in a series of bombings that’s targeting Turkish-occupied areas in northern and northeastern Syria. Hundreds were killed or injured in these bombings over the last few months. However, Turkey is yet to take any serious measure to improve security in these areas.

A New Road to Serfdom

Some years ago, Look, a now-defunct American magazine, published a set of cartoons which attempted to illustrate the basic framework of Friedrich Hayek’s Road to Serfdom. We have published them in other essays. We did it here. And here. And…here. Today we do it again with an excerpt of the first ten ‘steps’. You can see the full range on the Mises Institute’s website.

We keep publishing these cartoons because they are relevant and because they are powerful illustrations of the role of narrative in aiding the concentration of political power. We also think it is valuable to frequently consider forces like this which remain so applicable across time and circumstance.

Yet there is more than one path to serfdom. This is one. In the illustrated scenario, a major event like World War II is used by well-meaning political leaders to establish more long-lasting central control over the planning of economies. They also conjure a Strong Man to see them through. It was a familiar story for mid-20th century Europe and many other times in history. There are other paths. For example, there are paths which run through corporate monopoly power or, say, the Church. These sorts of paths tend to get less attention from those of us who cherry-pick when it comes to Hayek, but that doesn’t make them any less real.

Still, the power of the political Strong Man is a special case. The political Strong Man who seized power immorally or illegally is an even more special case. Yet it isn’t so much the specific case study that interests me so much as the evolution of the road itself. And it has evolved. Seventy-five years after the book that described it was printed, the road to serfdom has gotten shorter. Faster. Those who seek power no longer have to grapple with the kind of public debate that arrested the growth of political movements in the past. Always-on traditional and social media now provide much more powerful tools for missionaries to create common knowledge out of whole cloth. The Widening Gyre has created an environment of identity-based political support ready to muster at will. The methods to summon existential memes to compel compliance are now old hat.

In 2020, all it takes is a critical mass of missionaries to take up the message.
