Memes have their origin in either the positive or negative. You begin to create a meme because you think it'll be funny and informative or it's born out of frustration and you're trying to mock something.
Both have change as the same objective. You want to change people's thinking with it… Don't like the direction this is going? make a meme and try to change it.
Then, depending on the skill of the creator, the idea is condensed and refined… and condensed some more.
Somewhere in our shared evolutionary past, we developed the appetite for quick, easy to digest bits of information that make you go 'heh thats funny' and then on to the next one.
A successful meme sticks under your skin and keeps popping back into your head because of it's simple genius that so perfectly summed up the situation.
