Osteoporosis is relatively common among women of that generation (hint: skimmed milk). Surgery can fix it but they generally end up quit a bit shorter than they started out. The issue is that by the point the back is fixed, all the rest of the bones in the skeleton are so brittle that daily activity breaks them (even with out falls).
