DENVER (KDVR) – Retired Marine Corps Cpl. Don Whipple, 94, is set to meet President Donald Trump at his rally in Colorado Springs on Thursday evening.

 

Whipple fought at the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II.

 

After the war, he moved to the Denver metro area.

 

“I can’t wait to meet that guy,” Whipple said of the president.

 

He was also told he will meet Vice President Mike Pence.

While Governor Paterson's press conference announcing the introduction of same-sex legislation was an monumental landmark event, there was a very awkward moment. Right before Mayor Bloomberg was to speak, some music started playing which made him freak out more than a little.

It turned out that music was from a recorder owned by disabled reporter Michael Harris (of the Examiner). Harris later told PolitickerNY "a photographer knocked over his jacket which held his recorder. When it fell onto the ground, the recorded starting playing. Harris said he at first didn’t realize where the noise was coming from, but once he did, he could not reach down and get to the recorder easily." North Carolina’s new voter ID law appears to have been enacted with racially discriminatory intent and will be at least temporarily blocked during the 2020 elections, the N.C. Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday.

 

A federal court has already blocked the voter ID mandate at least through the 2020 primary elections, which are underway now. Tuesday’s decision — in a separate lawsuit in state courts rather than federal courts — could also extend that block until the general election in November.

 

The voter ID law was written after voters passed a new constitutional amendment in 2018 requiring photo ID to vote. However, this is now the second court to rule that African-American voters could be harmed by the way the Republican-led legislature wrote the law behind the amendment.

 

The judges issued what’s called a preliminary injunction, which is not a permanent ban on voter ID. It simply blocks the law from going into effect while the lawsuit is still underway. So if the case is still in the courts in November — which is entirely possible — then voters won’t have to show ID then, either.

 

Based on the evidence they’ve seen so far, the three judges who heard the case wrote, it appears the legislature will lose in its defense of the law. At one point in their ruling, the judges summarize a major part of the GOP defense and then add that those arguments “fundamentally miss the point.”

 

The activists who sued appear likely to be able to prove “that discriminatory intent was a motivating factor behind” the voter ID law, the judges wrote.

 

“Today, the state Court of Appeals has chosen to unanimously side with democracy,” said Wayne Goodwin, chairman of the N.C. Democratic Party, in a press release. “This Republican legislature has repeatedly targeted African Americans with surgical precision to keep them from making their voices heard.”

 

“We need to make it easier to vote — not harder,” he added.

How voter ID was passed

 

The constitutional amendment won around 55% of the vote in November 2018. Lawmakers came back to Raleigh a few weeks later — after Democrats had flipped enough seats in the election to eliminate the GOP’s veto-proof supermajority, but before those new Democratic lawmakers could be sworn in — to write the details of the law.

 

The judges wrote that the lame-duck voting session meant the law was written quickly, with “limited debate and public input and without further study of the law’s effects on minority voters.”

 

The Republican-backed bill passed almost entirely along party lines, and Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed it, to no avail. One black Democrat, former Charlotte Sen. Joel Ford, co-sponsored the bill and voted to overturn Cooper’s veto.

 

Last month, Ford told the News & Observer: “My motivation was the pure protection of the vote and to help people who did not have an ID secure one.”

 

In the wake of Tuesday’s ruling, Republicans have pointed to Ford’s support of the law as evidence that it couldn’t have been racist. Many have also echoed Ford’s point about helping people get IDs. Before the law was blocked in federal court, local boards of election were giving out free ID cards to people who asked for them.

 

Pat Ryan, a spokesman for Republican Senate leader Phil Berger, said in an interview Tuesday that the legislature had been careful to write a grace period into the law, so that people would still be able to vote without an ID if they could claim one of several excuses that were written into the law.

Details of the ruling

 

In their ruling, the judges specifically pointed to the legislature’s past history with racially motivated voter ID laws — a 2013 law that included voter ID among other election changes was struck down in federal court after it was found to “target African-Americans with almost surgical precision” — as well as issues in the 2018 law that indicate it, too, was motivated by a desire to make it harder for black people to vote.

 

“This is especially true where the Amendment itself allows for exceptions to any voter-ID law, yet the evidence shows the General Assembly specifically left out types of IDs that African Americans disproportionately lack,” the judges wrote. “Such a choice speaks more of an intention to target African American voters rather than a desire to comply with the newly created Amendment in a fair and balanced manner.”

 

That was a reference to the legislature’s decision not to allow voters to use public assistance IDs, said Allison Riggs, a lawyer for the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, which represented the challengers.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg added a little sparkle to her wardrobe on Friday night.

 

The 86-year-old Supreme Court justice attended an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., where she presented philanthropist and art patron Agnes Gund with the inaugural Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Woman of Leadership Award.

 

Photos from the event soon began to circulate showing Ginsburg — nicknamed the “Notorious RBG” by fans — rocking a pair of sparkly silver heels.

 

“Yes. All the yes,” journalist Kate Bennett write on Twitter with a series of photos giving a close-up look of the justice’s footwear.

 

Martha Stewart joined Ginsburg at the event, sharing an Instagram post of the justice that also showed off her choice in heels — which she paired with a pair of black slacks, a patterned blazer and statement earrings.

 

“Last evening was very special and enlightening Justice @ruth.bader.ginsburg Ruth Bader Ginsberg [sic] bestowed the first Woman of Leadership award on Agnes ‘Aggie’ Gund @agnesgund in a formal ceremony in the Library of Congress in Washington,” Stewart wrote. “It was such a distinct pleasure to be involved in such an illustrious event. Fans were quick to jump in the comments of Stewart’s post to praise Ginsburg for the glittering heels.

This is not the first time Ginsburg has made headlines with her fashion choices. One of her eye-catching necklaces became particularly popular when court observers noticed that she typically wore it on the days that she disapproved of the court’s decision.

 

The Banana Republic design became popularly known as her “dissent collar.” She also famously wore it the day after Donald Trump was elected president in 2016.

 

Last year, Banana Republic reissued the crochet-style necklace, naming it the “Notorious Necklace.”

 

Earlier this year, Ginsburg announced that she was “cancer free.” She underwent cancer treatment twice in 2019, including a three-week radiation treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Center in New York City over the summer for pancreatic cancer.

According to the judges’ ruling, a top Republican lawmaker said public assistance IDs shouldn’t be allowed because the federal government makes the rules for those IDs, so their reliability couldn’t be guaranteed by state officials. However, the legislature did vote to allow military IDs, which are also federal IDs.

 

“The failure to include public-assistance IDs was motivated in part by the fact that these types of IDs were disproportionately possessed by African American voters,” the judges concluded.

 

Joseph Kyzer, a spokesman for House Speaker Tim Moore, disagreed that racial motivations played any role in the process.

 

“The General Assembly gave ample exceptions that allow every single legal voter to cast a ballot,” he wrote in an email.

Legislators react

 

Moore, a Republican from Cleveland County who is the lead legislative defendant in the case, criticized the ruling Tuesday.

 

“North Carolinians know that General Assembly leaders will continue to fight on their behalf for a commonsense voter ID law that they chose to put in our state constitution, and we will not be deterred by judicial attempts to suppress the people’s voice in the democratic process,” Moore said in a news release.

 

The court’s ruling was unanimous, with judges Toby Hampson, Allegra Collins and John Arrowood all signing on. All three are Democrats.

 

NC GOP Chairman Michael Whatley released a statement Tuesday pointing to the fact that a majority of North Carolinians supported the voter ID amendment in 2018, as well as the fact that most states have some form of voter ID law.

 

“An overwhelming percentage of North Carolinians of every demographic support voter ID and we are very disappointed to see a panel made up of three Democratic judges overturning their votes by judicial fiat,” he said.

 

Democrats, however, said the ruling is an example of why the courts remain an important part of the government.

 

“This is why an independent judiciary is indispensable,” tweeted Democratic Rep. Marcia Morey, who is a former Durham judge. “Great decision today for voters.”

The nation’s next maturing Eurobond, $1.2 billion of notes due on March 9, fell to a record low of 60 cents on Wednesday, sending the annualized yield to 1,290%. The Beirut-based Al-Akhbar newspaper reported Wednesday that the Lebanese government will formally ask financial and legal advisers how it should handle its Eurobonds, with a view to potentially restructuring them. Lebanon is reaching out to banks including Citigroup Inc., Rothschild & Co. and JPMorgan Chase & Co., the newspaper said. It didn’t say where it got the information.

 

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund is sending a team to Beirut between Feb. 20 and 23 to discuss Lebanon’s economic issues with government officials, spokesman Gerry Rice said. Since the bonds sunk into distressed territory, soon after the start of anti-government protests in October, investors have shifted their focus to recovery rates, with trades driven by prices rather than yields.

 

Still, the surge in yields is an indication of how concerned markets have become. Most of Lebanon’s other Eurobonds have fallen to below 35 cents, while its five-year credit-default swaps hover around 5,260 basis points, the highest in the world, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. There is one other way, you can "bake" energy into an image by making the meme with a high energy environment.

"Absolutely Unacceptable" - Leaked Boeing Memo Shows 'Debris' Found In 737 MAX Fuel-Tanks

 

With airline after airline pushing back their 'return-to-service' dates based on Boeing's total lack of clarity on the path forward for the 737 MAX, the troubled aircraft maker (and the troubled aircraft) now faces more problems.

According to an internal memo, seen by Reuters, Boeing found debris that could pose potential safety risks in the fuel tanks of several 737 MAX aircraft that are in storage and waiting to be delivered to airlines.

To be clear about what 'debris' means, Reuters details that:

"an industrial term for rags, tools, metal shavings and other materials left behind by workers during the production process."

And notes that this 'debris' problem has been a quality control issue for various Boeing aircraft, such as its KC-46 tankers.

 

Foreign-object debris (FOD) “is absolutely unacceptable. One escape is one too many,” Mark Jenks, a Boeing vice president and general manager of the 737 program, said in a message to employees that was viewed by Reuters.

“With your help and focus, we will eliminate FOD from our production system,”

The FOD problem on the MAX was first reported Tuesday on Scott Hamilton’s Leeham.net aviation site:

“There’s a systemic issue with Boeing’s quality control that hasn’t been corralled yet,” said Hamilton in an interview.

“This is not related to the MAX crashes or exclusively a MAX issue. Boeing has these FOD issues on other airplane programs.”

 

A Boeing spokesman confirmed the memo’s authenticity; and Boeing now having to inspect more than 400 stored 737 Max jets, but Bernard Choi said “it’s still undecided if we will inspect the rest” of the MAX fleet - another 385 aircraft that were delivered to customers but have been grounded for almost a year and are parked at airfields around the world.

“Obviously, we’ll do what’s right for safety,” Choi added.

Boeing spokesman Chaz Bickers was, however, careful to claim that the company does not see the debris as contributing to delays in the jet’s return to service. (The inspections will take two to three days per aircraft. Fuel must be drained from the wings before a mechanic can go in and do a thorough check.).

The Federal Aviation Administration said it was aware that Boeing “is conducting a voluntary” inspection for debris in the undelivered aircraft “as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to ensure manufacturing quality.”

It may delay the airlines' decision to accept delivery of the jets though (as its not exactly reassuring to crew members and passengers of the company’s commitment to manufacturing quality and safety!)

Abbott says top Malaysian leaders suspected pilot of MH370

 

PERTH, Australia (AP) — Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said the “top levels” of the Malaysian government long suspected that the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 almost six years ago was a mass murder-suicide by the pilot.

 

Abbott was prime minister when the plane carrying 239 people vanished on March 8, 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

 

Australia, working on Malaysia's behalf, coordinated what became the largest search in aviation history, but it failed to find the plane before being ended in 2017.

 

Speaking in a Sky News documentary to air on Wednesday and Thursday, Abbott said high-ranking Malaysian officials believed veteran pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah deliberately downed the jet.

 

“My very clear understanding, from the very top levels of the Malaysian government, is that from very, very early on, they thought it was murder-suicide by the pilot,” said Abbott, who was Australia’s prime minster from 2013 to 2015.

 

“I'm not going to say who said what to whom, but let me reiterate, I want to be absolutely crystal clear, it was understood at the highest levels that this was almost certainly murder-suicide by the pilot.”

 

In response, Malaysia's former prime minister and police chief said there was no conclusive proof of pilot suicide.

 

Former Prime Minister Najib Razak told the Free Malaysia Today online news portal that a possible pilot suicide was never ruled out but it would be “unfair and legally irresponsible" to pin the blame on Zaharie as the black boxes had not been found.

 

Malaysian police chief Abdul Hamid Bador, who was one of the investigators, told local media that there was no evidence of Zaharie's involvement and that the plane's disappearance was still a mystery. Former Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said in a statement that investigators had “explored every single lead and possibility" but found no conclusive answer to why the plane vanished.

A Malaysian-led independent investigation report released in 2018 said the plane's course was changed manually but did not name a suspect and raised the possibility of “intervention by a third party.” Investigators, however, said the cause of the disappearance couldn't be determined until the wreckage and the plane's black boxes are found.

 

Malaysia's Ministry of Transport didn't immediately respond to Abbott's comments. Malaysia has had a change of government since the plane's disappearance, with current Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad ousting Najib, whose party had ruled Malaysia since its independence in 1957.

 

The pilot's family has long denied he was suicidal. The 2018 investigative report said there was no evidence of abnormal behavior or stress in the two pilots and none of the passengers had pilot training.

 

Abbott said he did not believe conspiracy theories centered on the Malaysian government, which owns Malaysia Airlines.

 

“I’ve read all these stories that the Malaysians allegedly didn’t want the murder-suicide theory pursued because they were embarrassed about one of their pilots doing this. I have no reason to accept that,” he said.

 

The Australian-led search scoured 120,000 square kilometers (46,000 square miles) of the southern Indian Ocean and cost 200 million Australian dollars ($150 million). A private hunt by Texas-based company Ocean Infinity later searched more than 96,000 square kilometers (37,000 square miles) of sea.

 

Debris that washed ashore in the western Indian Ocean has been confirmed as coming from the missing Boeing 777 and indicated a broad expanse of the ocean where the plane likely crashed after running out of fuel.

 

Australia, Malaysia and China agreed in 2016 that an official search would only resume if the three countries had credible evidence that identified a specific location for the wreckage. Most of the passengers were Chinese.

 

Abbott believed a new investigation was warranted.

 

“Let's assume that it was murder-suicide by the pilot and if there is any part of that ocean that could have been reached on that basis that has not yet been explored, let's get out and explore it,” he said.

 

Abbott's comments reopened old wounds for some families.

 

Jacquita Gomes, whose husband Patrick was a flight attendant on the plane, said it was frustrating that Abbott revealed this six years late.

 

“Why now? If it's true, for six years, we have been living a lie," she said.

I wonder if CA is possibly in play. It would be possible if voter fraud is under control to an almost non-existent level. At least as far as machine rigging and ballot stuffing. Illegals with valid ID’s and voter cards voting will be tougher to get a handle on. But I’d bet, there at some of that last group that would actually vote for Trump, albeit they’re a minority. I get depressed AF cause I've known how bad things are most of my life, and got fucked over quite a bit along the way, which has the tendency of making life significantly moar difficult. China Prepares To Nationalize Systematically-Important HNA Group

 

he last time we looked closely at China's "big four" conglomerates, HNA, Anbang, Evergrande and Dalian Wanda, was back in lat 2017 in the context of the systemic risk (i.e. record debt) that these companies had accumulated as part of their tremendous offshore M&A spree in prior years which however came to a crashing halt once the companies were no longer able to issue cheap debt and pursue a ponzi strategy of buying up more companies, then using them as even more collateral for even more debt for even more M&A and so on. And while the systemic risk among these conglomerates declined in recent years, it still remained as a byproduct of the sheer size - measured by the number of people they employ as well as debt on the balance sheet - and may explain why according to Bloomberg, China is planning to take over, i.e., nationalize one of the most infamous of Chinese conglomerates, HNA Group, and sell off its airline assets "after the coronavirus outbreak hit the indebted conglomerate’s ability to meet financial obligations."

 

In other words, while zombie conglomerates such as HNA, Anbang, et al were on the cusp of collapse for the past three years, all it would take to tip them over into insolvency was a "black swan", or rather "black bat" event. Such as the coronavirus epidemic. Which left Beijing with little choice: nationalize the company, or let it fail and suffer the consequences as thousands of people are suddenly left without a job.

 

As Bloomberg further reports, the government of Hainan, the southern island province where HNA is based, "is in talks to take control of the conglomerate, which has been shedding assets after a global buying spree left it with one of the highest levels of corporate debt in China." Bloomberg sources said that in keeping with a model laid out for bail outs of insolvent banks, the HNA airline assets could be taken over later by other local companies.

 

The report also said that the takeover announcement could be made as early as tomorrow, though talks are ongoing and could be delayed or fall apart, the people said. The virus epidemic has killed more than 2,000 people, the majority of them in China, where it has crippled the world’s second-largest economy, shuttering stores, bringing factories to a halt and triggering a virtual shutdown of the airline industry. Since 2018, HNA has sold off tens of billions of dollars in assets including stakes in Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. and Deutsche Bank AG.

 

And speaking of Deutsche Bank, with a nearly 5% stake in the German lender, it remains unclear if HNA would be forced to liquidate this holding under after takeover, although judging by the kneejerk reaction lower, traders aren't willing to hang around and find out.

Noticed this in one paper:

But the conclusion says:

The levels of genetic similarity between the 2019-nCoV and RaTG13 suggest that the latter does not provide the exact variant that caused the outbreak in humans, but the hypothesis that 2019-nCoV has originated from bats is very likely. We show evidence that the novel coronavirus (2019-nCov) is not-mosaic consisting in almost half of its genome of a distinct lineage within the betacoronavirus. These genomic features and their potential association with virus characteristics and virulence in humans need further attention.

 

"Very Likely" is not a rejection of he hypothesis of emergence as a result of a recent recombination event. Having levels of geneti similarity between the two strains doesn't mean it can't be man-made in some areas.

Three months after launching his campaign for president, billionaire media and financial data mogul Mike Bloomberg will make his debut in the Democratic debates Wednesday night as the remaining candidates face off in Las Vegas. Seeing the threat Bloomberg posed from the beginning, Trump long ago coined a moniker, "Mini Mike" Bloomberg, a dig on his rival's diminutive stature. And in a Wednesday morning Tweet, Trump trotted it out once again, along with seemingly forgotten allegations that the candidate - who has promised to pour $1 billion of his massive fortune into the campaign, already having spent hundreds of millions of dollars on ads and campaign staff - violated FEC rules when Bloomberg News said it wouldn't cover his campaign.

 

"Is corrupt Bloomberg News going to say what a pathetic debater Mini Mike is, that he doesn't respect our great farmers, or that he has violated campaign finances laws at the highest and most sinister level with "payoffs" all over the place?" Trump said.

 

Trump is of course referencing Bloomberg News's decision not to cover its owners candidacy, a decision that led several staff members to resign. The bit about not respecting farmers is a reference to this, and the FEC violations apparently reference a complaint filed by the Republican National Lawyers Association.

 

The complaint alleges that Bloomberg News's decision not to cover Bloomberg's campaign is tantamount to "an impermissible in-kind corporate contribution".

 

Now: Will we hear Bernie Sanders raise this issue during the debate? If we do, you can bet Trump is to blame.

 

Bloomberg's campaign manager, a longtime Bloomberg journalist who was infamously sued by the president over a book he wrote, claimed that Trump's tweet is evidence he's 'scared' of Bloomberg.

  • Rod Blagojevich’s attorneys filed a motion today to subpoena President Obama to testify at the former governor’s trial…

 

“President Obama has direct knowledge to allegations made in the indictment. In addition, President Obama’s public statements contradict other witness statements, specifically those made by labor union official and Senate Candidate B,” the motion said.

 

The motion is here. Several parts are redacted, but you can easily copy and paste the entire motion into a text file and view all the redacted material. Oops on somebody’s part.

 

  • All of the most explosive allegations in the motion were redacted.

 

Blagojevich’s lawyers allege that Tony Rezko admitted to violating the law by personally contributing “a large sum of cash” to a public official’s campaign,

which the Blagojevich people say is Obama.

 

The lawyers claim that Obama may not have been telling the truth when he said Rezko never relayed a request from a lobbyist to hold a fundraiser for Obama in exchange for favorable legislative action (Obama, however, refused to agree to the offer, Rezko allegedly says).

 

They also claim that Obama allegedly lied when he said he didn’t have any conversations with Rezko about a casino license…

 

In a recent in camera proceeding, the government tendered a three paragraph letter indicating that Rezko “has stated in interviews with the government that he engaged in election law violations by personally contributing a large sum of cash to the campaign of a public official who is not Rod Blagojevich. … Further, the public official denies being aware of cash contributions to his campaign by Rezko or others and denies having conversations with Rezko related to cash contributions.

 

Rezko has also stated in interviews with the government that he believed he transmitted a quid pro quo offer from a lobbyist to the public official, whereby the lobbyist would hold a fundraiser for the official in exchange for favorable official action, but that the public official rejected the offer. The public official denies any such conversation.

 

In addition, Rezko has stated to the government that he and the public official had certain conversations about gaming legislation and administration, which the public official denies having had.

 

President Obama is the only one who can testify as to the veracity of Mr. Rezko’s allegations above.

Two women are dead after the car they were in plunged off a Miami ferry into the waters off an exclusive island with a members-only club.

 

Miami Fire Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard responded Tuesday after the operator of the Fisher Island ferry reported that a vehicle had fallen off the boat, the agencies reported.

 

Dive crews found the vehicle near Fisher Island within hours, according to the Coast Guard. Two unresponsive women were discovered inside.

 

The vehicle, a 2019 blue Mercedes Benz, and the bodies were recovered overnight, a statement from the Miami-Dade Police Department said Wednesday. The victims were identified as Fisher Island resident Emma Afra, 63, and Viviane Brahms, 75, of New York.

 

Police and the Coast Guard are investigating the incident, and a medical examiner will determine the causes of death.

 

The Fisher Island ferry shuttles people and their vehicles between Miami Beach and Fisher Island, a "private luxury community … consistently ranked as one of the wealthiest zip codes in the U.S.," which also "boasts a beach club with one of the country’s only truly private beaches" and a luxury hotel, according to the club's website.

 

"To board the ferry, hotel guests require pre-arranged security clearance, guaranteeing security and exclusivity," the site says. "From the moment you board the ferry, a wave of calm overtakes you, as you know the luxury, beauty and ultimate lifestyle that await you." The ferry is the only way to get between Fisher Island and the mainland.

 

A media representative for the club said Wednesday morning that a statement was forthcoming.
