Israel reduces amount of bread served to Palestinian prisoners

 

The Israeli Prison Services (IPS) has decided to reduce food amounts and many other services offered to Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli jails, Palestinian Prisoner Club (PPC) revealed on Monday.

 

In a statement, the PPC announced that this step is part of Gilad Erdan’s Committee, which decided in 2018 to cancel all the achievements that the prisoners gained throughout their struggle with the IPS.

 

The statement, which was sent to mass media, pointed out that the IPS is to reduce the number of TV channels allowed for the prisoners from ten to seven, to lower the number of loaves of bread from five to four, and to withdraw cookers and 40 items from their purchases. In addition, the IPS will also cut down on the amount of meat, water and books allowed.

 

It will also offer only boiled eggs, ban the use of coloured blankets, restrict movement among prison departments, decrease the time of breaks, minimise the number of family visits and change factional representation.

 

Meanwhile, the prisoners stressed that they are currently laying out a resistance plan against the IPS over these measures, which are gradually being implemented.

 

The PPC reiterated that the IPS is intending to impose a new reality inside the Israeli prisons, based on political orders and systematic policies aiming to put more pressure on the prisoners and rendering their lives unbearable.

Trump grants clemency to 11, including former junk bond king Michael Milken

President Trump granted pardons or commutations Tuesday to 11 convicted felons, including Michael Milken, the disgraced former junk bond king who waged a decades-long campaign for a pardon, in a mass clemency that expanded the president’s interventions in judicial matters since his Senate impeachment acquittal.

Among those who had their sentences commuted was former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who has served eight years of a 14 year prison term after he was found guilty for trying to sell an open U.S. Senate seat that had been held by Barack Obama.

 

The president also made clear he has not ruled out pardoning Roger Stone, who is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court on Thursday despite Trump’s complaints on Twitter earlier Tuesday that his longtime friend and advisor deserved a new trial.

 

Stone was convicted in November of seven counts of witness tampering and lying to Congress during the special counsel probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Trump told reporters he thought Stone was β€œbeing treated unfairly.”

Trump dismissed criticism that his furious tweets about specific criminal cases involving his associates, federal judges hearing them, and the prosecutors and jurors at trials have served to politicize the criminal justice system and raise questions about the integrity of the Justice Department.

 

β€œI’m actually, I guess, the chief law enforcement officer of the country,” Trump said when asked if he had crossed a line by interfering at the Justice Department. β€œI’ve chosen not to be involved,” he continued. β€œI could be involved if I wanted to be.”

 

Trump spoke at Joint Base Andrews as he embarked on a four-day swing to Nevada and California, and just hours after the White House announced the first pardon, that of former San Francisco 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo, Jr., who was convicted in a gambling fraud scandal.

 

Trump also commuted the prison sentence of Bernard Kerik, who led the New York Police Department after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and was later nominated by President George W. Bush to head the Department of Homeland Security, although his name was later pulled. Kerik was sentenced to four years in prison in 2010 after pleading guilty to eight felony charges, including tax fraud and lying to investigators.

 

Kerik expressed his gratitude to Trump, saying, β€œToday is one of the greatest days of my life.”

 

Trump also issued full pardons to Ariel Friedler, Paul Pogue, David Safavian and Angela Stanton. And he commuted sentences for three others: Tynice Nichole Hall, Crystal Munoz and Judith Negron.

 

Trump first floated the possibility of pardoning Blagojevich in May 2018 despite advisors’ warnings of political fallout from commuting the sentence of a politician whose crime exemplifies the kind of corruption Trump’s β€œdrain the swamp” messaging vowed to root out.

 

Blagojevich was convicted in 2011 of trying to extract a personal benefit from naming a replacement for Obama in the U.S. Senate after Obama was elected to the White House in 2008. He has been imprisoned since 2012 in a federal prison in Colorado, and was not due for release until 2024.

 

Trump’s commutation frees Blagojevich from prison without wiping out his conviction.

 

Blagojevich appeared on NBC’s β€œThe Apprentice” in 2009, which was then hosted by Trump. On Tuesday, the president denied knowing him, however.

 

β€œHe seems like a very nice person, don’t know him,” Trump said of the former Democratic governor.

 

The Illinois House voted to impeach the governor and proceed to a trial to remove him from office. In January 2009, the state Senate unanimously voted to remove him from office.

European court reinstates order for Russia to pay $50 billion for oligarch's lost oil assets

 

A Dutch appeals court has reinstated an international arbitration panel's ruling that Russia should pay $50 billion in compensation to ex-shareholders of the defunct Russian oil giant, Yukos, overturning a previous court decision.

 

The Hague Court of Appeal ruled on Tuesday that the 2016 ruling cancelling the arbitration decision "was not correct," meaning that "the arbitration order is in force again."

 

The Russian Justice Ministry said immediately after the ruling that it would appeal the court's decision. The Ministry of Justice said the court had ignored the fact that the former Yukos shareholders were not "bona fide investors."

 

"Control over the assets of this company was obtained through a number of illegal actions, including conspiracy and bribery of officials," said the ministry. "During the management of Yukos by the former majority owners, there was massive tax evasion, illegal withdrawal of assets abroad, money laundering, and other illegal actions."

 

The Russian Justice Ministry pointed out that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) did not find any political motives in the criminal prosecution of former Yukos executives Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev and that no compensation would be awarded.

 

The ministry added it will continue to uphold its legitimate interests and plans to appeal the ruling in the Supreme Court of the Netherlands.

 

The arbitration panel had originally ruled that Moscow seized control of Yukos in 2003 by hammering the company with massive tax claims. It ordered Russia to pay former shareholders $50 billion in compensation.

 

Russia challenged the decision, sending a detailed response to the Hague's District Court. It expanded on arguments about unlawful acts committed during and after the privatization of Yukos. It revealed examples of manipulation and collusion during mortgage auctions, bribing state managers, creating an extensive network of shell companies to minimize taxes, and exporting illegally acquired assets abroad, concealing the true beneficiaries of the supposedly foreign companies that filed lawsuits in The Hague against Russia.

 

In April 2016, the Hague's District Court overturned a decision by the Permanent Court of Arbitration ordering Russia to compensate former shareholders of the company that was once owned by oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

 

In the summer that year, ex-shareholders appealed to the Hague Court of Appeal to reverse the district court’s decision and restore the arbitral awards.

The leaders of the Virginia Colony had long wanted school to give their sons higher education, as well as to educate the natives. An attempt to establish a permanent university at Henricus for these purposes around 1618 failed after the Indian Massacre of 1622 wiped out the entire settlement, which was not rebuilt.

 

Almost 70 years later, with encouragement from the Colony's House of Burgesses and other prominent individuals, Blair prepared a plan, believed by some historians to be modelled after the earlier one from Henricus, and returned to England in 1691 to petition the monarchy for a new college. The Powhatan people had been largely decimated and reduced to reservations after the last major conflict in 1644, but the religious aspiration to educate them into Christianity was nevertheless retained, perhaps as a moral incentive to help gain support and approval in London. Moreover, the school would serve to train clergy born in the colonies for service among their neighbors.[4]

 

The trip to London proved successful. Blair was supported in his efforts by John Tillotson, who was the Archbishop of Canterbury. (Protestants King William and Queen Mary II of England were reigning joint monarchs of Great Britain, having just deposed Catholic James II of England in 1688 during the Glorious Revolution.) In 1693, a charter was granted for The College of William & Mary in Virginia, named to honour both monarchs. Blair was made president of the new school for life.[3] He served for 50 years, from 1693–1743, and remains the longest serving president of the college and the second longest serving college president in US history.

 

After Blair returned to Virginia, the trustees of the new college bought a parcel of 330 acres (1.3 km2) from Thomas Ballard for the new school. The location chosen was at Middle Plantation, a high point on the Virginia Peninsula so named because it was equidistant from the James and York Rivers. Middle Plantation had served as a defensive location during periodic conflicts with the Native Americans since its establishment in 1632. Blair established his home at nearby Rich Neck Plantation.

 

The College was given a seat in the House of Burgesses.

Financial income was to come by taxation of a penny per pound on tobacco exported from Maryland and Virginia to countries other than England, and from other similar sources, such as an export duty on furs and animal skins.

 

The new school opened in temporary buildings in 1694. Properly called the "College Building," the first version of the Wren Building was built at Middle Plantation beginning on 8 August 1695 and occupied by 1700. Today, the Wren Building is the oldest academic structure in continuous use in America. (Incidentally, it is called the "Wren Building" because tradition has it that the building was designed by the famed English architect Sir Christopher Wren who had designed St Paul's Cathedral in London. His actual involvement with the College Building completed in 1700 is disputed by some historians.)

Supply Chain Chaos Unfolds At Major Chinese Ports As Frozen Meat Containers Pile Up

 

New evidence from Bloomberg reveals cracking global supply chains are fast emerging at major Chinese ports with thousands of containers of frozen meat piling up with nowhere to go.

 

The Covid19 outbreak will remain a dominant issue for 1Q as supply chain shocks are being felt by multinationals on either side of the hemisphere.

 

Sources told Bloomberg that containers of frozen pork, chicken, and beef (mostly from South America, Europe, and the US) are piling up at Tianjin, Shanghai, and Ningbo ports because of the lack of truck drivers and many transportation networks remain closed.

 

Seaports in China are quickly running out of room to house the containers and cannot provide enough electricity points to keep existing containers cold. This has forced many vessels to be rerouted to other destinations.

 

We've already noted that Bloomberg's Stephen Stapczynski recorded footage of an oil tanker parking lot off the Singapore coast last week as refiners in China cut runs as crude consumption has collapsed by more than 4 million barrels per day.

 

It's clear that a logistical nightmare is unfolding as two-thirds of the Chinese economy has effectively shut down much of its production capacity, producing a massive "demand shock."

 

The impact on the global economy is already dragging down world trade and could force the World Trade Organization (WTO) to slash economic growth forecasts for the year.

 

The Chinese economy constitutes about 20% of global GDP, and supply chain disruptions across China could cause a cascading effect that could tilt the world into recession.

 

But it's not just frozen meats piling up at Chinese ports or a crude glut developing. There's a high risk that product shortages to Western countries could be 60-90 days out.

 

Alibaba Group's CEO Daniel Zhang warned last week that the supply chain disruption, or "shock," is a "black swan event" for the global economy.

 

The "black swan" warning was also repeated by Freeport-McMoRan CEO Richard Adkerson several weeks ago after he said the outbreak of the virus in China is a "real black swan event."

 

China's economy is at a standstill and could trigger the next economic crisis, not seen since 2008.

Wife of ex-Bloomberg News reporter says Bloomberg tried to β€˜ruin’ family after she spoke out against China

 

The wife of a former Bloomberg News reporter claimed Michael Bloomberg threatened to β€œruin” her family to protect his company’s ties to China. Leta Hong Fincher, whose husband, Michael Forsythe, now writes for the New York Times, accused the former New York City mayor of trying to ruin her family financially after she revealed that they had been threatened by Chinese authorities over negative coverage about Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping.

 

In an editorial for the Intercept, Fincher explained that Forsythe had written a story for Bloomberg News in June 2012 that described how Xi’s family became incredibly wealthy when he took over party leadership. After that story was published, Fincher received threats against her young children, who were 6 and 8 years old at the time. Bloomberg News urged the family not to speak out about the threats. Fincher stayed quiet until October 2012, when a separate story in the New York Times revealed that other reporters had been threatened. She tweeted, β€œNow that NYT has gone public about Chinese govt pressure, I can admit that we got death threats after Bloomberg story on Xi Jinping.”

 

Bloomberg News demanded that Fincher pull the tweets down. She refused but agreed to stop discussing the issue online. In 2013, Forsythe had been working on a story similar to the story about Xi’s family raking in cash. Just before the story was set to publish, Bloomberg knifed the story over fears that they would be β€œkicked out of China.” Bloomberg, who was mayor of New York City at the time, denied that he had killed the story, saying, β€œNobody thinks that we’re wusses and not willing to stand up and write stories that are of interest to the public and that are factually correct.”

 

Shortly after he made those remarks, Fincher and Forsythe were ordered to sign a nondisclosure agreement. Fincher wrote, β€œBloomberg lawyers in Hong Kong threatened to devastate my family financially by forcing us to repay the company for our relocation fees to Hong Kong from Beijing and the advance on my husband’s salary that we took out, leave us with no health insurance or income, and take me to court if I did not sign a nondisclosure agreement β€” even though I had never been a Bloomberg employee.” Fincher claimed that Bloomberg’s attorney was going to demand that they pay thousands of dollars to the company, including his legal fees, if she didn’t sign the agreement, despite not being an employee of the company. She hired the same attorneys who defended Edward Snowden to help her with the case, which Bloomberg eventually dropped. β€œMy story shows the lengths that the Bloomberg machine will go to in order to avoid offending Beijing,” Fincher wrote. β€œBloomberg’s company, Bloomberg LP, is so dependent on the vast China market for its business that its lawyers threatened to devastate my family financially if I didn’t sign an NDA silencing me about how Bloomberg News killed a story critical of Chinese Communist Party leaders.”

 

Fincher noted that she believed there were many similar stories out there against Bloomberg that have been silenced by nondisclosure agreements. β€œI haven’t met any of the other women [bound by disclosures], but I imagine that they, too, may have experienced the same terror of being threatened by a multibillion-dollar corporation, which could ruin their lives if they did not comply,” Fincher wrote. β€œEven now, I am nervous about the consequences of speaking out. But the more of us speak out, the stronger we are.”

 

The billionaire has been known to meddle in the newsroom owned by his company, Bloomberg LP. When he announced his presidential bid, Bloomberg News announced that it would continue its policy of not investigating Bloomberg or his finances. Instead, it decided to halt all investigations into 2020 Democrats but agreed to continue digging into the Trump administration and campaign. Bloomberg, 78, surged into second place in a recent national poll, trailing only Sen. Bernie Sanders. The billionaire’s strong showing in the poll also qualified him for his first debate appearance on Wednesday in Nevada.

Factories all over China have been shut down, global supply chains have been hit by an unprecedented shock, the Baltic Dry Index is absolutely collapsing, the tourism industry is being absolutely devastated, and companies all over the globe are warning that sales will be lower than anticipated this quarter. This coronavirus outbreak is already taking a very serious toll on the global economy, and experts are warning that we could still be in the very early chapters of this crisis. If this outbreak ultimately evolves into a horrifying worldwide pandemic that kills millions of people, what will the global economy look like a few months from now?

 

For the moment, more than 98 percent of the confirmed cases are still in China, but that could soon change.

 

And if this virus does start spreading in other countries like it is in China, that could rapidly push us into a deep global recession.

Bloomberg cited a new report via China Merchants Securities (CMSC) that said new apartment sales crashed 90% in the first week of February over the same period last year. Sales of existing homes in 8 cities plunged 91% over the same period.

 

β€œThe sector is bracing for a worse impact than the 2003 SARS pandemic,” said Bai Yanjun, an analyst at property-consulting firm China Index Holdings Ltd. β€œIn 2003, the home market was on a cyclical rise. Now, it’s already reeling from an adjustment.”

 

We have never seen an economic catastrophe of this nature since the communists took power in China, and everyone agrees that all of the Chinese economic numbers are going to be absolutely terrible for the foreseeable future.

What Obama Is Saying in Private About the Democratic Primary

 

Democratic leaders, whose two primary concerns these days are trying to keep Donald Trump in check and maintaining their own party’s unity, have had ample reason for concern in the first seven weeks of 2020. There was the end of Trump’s impeachment trial, the Iowa caucus fiasco, and the growing certainty that their intensifying presidential nominating contest will likely drag on for months. One Thursday afternoon in late January, they briefly had another worry to contend with: the entire party losing its mind after a Fox Business reporter tweeted a β€œSCOOP” that Barack Obama β€œis growing increasingly anxious about @BernieSanders rise in the national polls & where the avowed socialist would take the country; he is considering a public statement addressing it.” The report was quickly rubbished by those close to the former president β€” such an action would obviously be painfully out of character for the studiously quiet Obama, who has always been judicious about weighing in on Democratic primary fights, and whose defining post-presidential quality has been distance. But the tweet and ensuing hysteria did renew an unsettling round of questions among candidates, elected officials, campaign strategists, voters, and donors: Well, what does Obama think of all of this?

 

The truth of Obama’s silence on the 2020 primary is that it’s not just about his obvious wish to stay out of the spotlight, but it also reflects a choreographed strategy. With the race looking more and more likely to grow bitter and messy, and maybe even wind up in a contested convention, the former president and those around him are increasingly sure he will need to play a prominent role in bringing the party back together and calming its tensions later this summer, including perhaps in Milwaukee, where the party’s meeting is scheduled to be held in July. So he is committed to not allowing his personal thoughts to dribble out in the meantime, directly or via leaks, conscious of how any sense that he’s taking sides in intraparty disputes could rock the primary in the short run and potentially undermine his ability to play this larger role in the months ahead. β€œHe says one sentence about being woke at some conference, and the Twitterverse freaks out,” recalled one of his friends, referring to the former president’s comments at an Obama Foundation meeting in Chicago that set off a firestorm. He and his advisors β€œare very aware [of the effect of] one word that Barack Obama says.” And he’s being careful to ensure he can be seen as an honest broker in June and July β€” a potentially necessary designation given both his status as the party’s most popular figure and the real possibility that Sanders, or another candidate, could enter the summer with a plurality of the delegates needed for the nomination but not an outright victory. β€œObama is going to look at the [delegate math to determine] the outcome. But Obama is hardly the only Democrat sweating that particular possibility, especially with Michael Bloomberg β€” who some in Obama’s orbit favor but many regard warily β€” poised to swoop in on the process in March. Sorting out that confusion might be the most complicated scenario for Obama, the person added. The reality might be more simple: β€œIt’s not gonna happen before the convention, [but] he’s gonna be all-in for Bernie if he’s the nominee.”

 

Watching from afar, Obama is for now sticking to the plan he set out at the beginning of the election cycle. He’s been going out of his way to remind worried Democrats who come to him that his 2008 primary was long and brutal, and still ended in his election. And his purposeful distance from the race isn’t all about managing party factions in the short-term. He speaks with fewer people regularly about politics than ever β€” he rarely even talks with Tom Perez, the former Labor secretary he helped install as Democratic National Committee chairman, for example β€” in part because he is less interested in the back-and-forth than he was even as president, when his lack of patience for political horse-trading and debating was notorious.

Edward Hospital CEO Pam Davis was so angry at being subjected to an alleged state shakedown she went to the FBI and wound up working undercover for eight months.

The beginning of the end for Gov. Blagojevich was actually five years ago when authorities say some of the governor's cronies tried to muscle an unsuspecting suburban hospital boss.

But unlike other business executives who were willing to pay-to-play, Naperville hospital president Pamela Meyer Davis wasn't about to roll over.

"I felt that there was something very, very wrong and it was right at that moment that I made the decision I should call the FBI," said Davis, Edward Hospital CEO.

What Pam Davis told FBI agents that day in 2003 was that financier Nicholas Hurtgen had tried to shake her down. She said Hurtgen demanded that Edward Hospital hire his company and a certain politically connected construction firm or its expansion plan to Plainfield would be denied by the state.

"I had my personal suspicions that it would go all the way up to the level of the governor," said Davis.

And so the FBI asked Davis, a grandmother of six, to wear a wire.

"For females, you typically wear it in your bra and that is where I was wearing it," said Davis. "I was trying to run a very busy regional medical center with 5000 employees while I do this sort of second full time job of working undercover."

Conversations she recorded the next eight months exposed pay to play hospital deals and resulted in the arrests of several clout-heavy players including state hospital board honcho Stuart Levine, former Democratic party official Joe Cari, Junior and Blagojevich fundraiser Tony Rezko.

"Part of what amazed me throughout this whole investigation was how absolutely corrupt and arrogant the individuals involved were," said Davis.

It was an investigation that would wind its way to Gov. Rod Blagojevich, just as Pam Davis suspected it would five years ago when she stood up to the governor's men.

"They felt they were so smart and powerful that whatever they attempted to do was well within their control and they would never be stopped," said Davis.

Even as Gov. Blagojevich remains in political and legal limbo, the financier who allegedly tried to shake down Pam Davis five years ago hasn't even gone to trial yet. He denies all pay to play allegations and is due to go on trial March 9.

As for Edward Hospital, the project to expand into Plainfield has still not received state approval. But it's not lost on her and others that some making the decision are still Blagojevich appointees.

Davis will be featured as "Person of the Week" on ABC's World News airing at 5:30 p.m., Friday, January 9, on ABC 7.

Spain searches for 143 boat migrants near Canary islands as Atlantic arrivals double

 

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) – Spain on Tuesday was searching for some 143 people missing on five migrant boats en route to the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, according to Spain’s maritime rescue service.

 

A Civil Guard plane was searching for the boats near the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, off the northwest coast of Africa, the service said.

There's two sides in this fight. And if you're not on one, you're on the other. Everyone in a position of power has made a choice at this point and I'm not getting the impression Sanders chose them. He doesn't look nervous enough, frankly. As much as most here will hate to admit it, Sanders' movement is largely organic because large sections of society do not share in the benefits of this much-touted "amazing economy." It's effected certain sectors, but ignored certain others. Mostly the young and indebted.
