Underground group releases 'MAGA' hat-wearing pigeons in downtown Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Following the viral cowboy pigeons, many believed accessorized birds were a thing of the past. To those folks, one self-described "radical" group says, “Think again.” An otherwise normal flock of birds was let go in downtown Las Vegas Tuesday, on the eve of a crucial Democratic presidential debate.

However, to anyone paying attention, these birds had something very strange atop their bobbing heads: customized “Make America Great Again” hats. Only one of the pigeons was different, fitted with a small orange hairpiece meant to mimic President Trump.

The group behind the stunt is called P.U.T.I.N, an acronym for Pigeons United To Interfere Now, and according to their peculiar release sent out late Tuesday evening, they are anonymous underground radicals and their pigeons are trained. The group’s founder, Coo Hand Luke, says that the project came at the end of months of “exhaustive research, logistical hurdles and pigeon care taking,” adding that the release date was coordinated to serve as a sign of loyal support for President Trump.

The release says that the group was inspired by a Cold War-era CIA operation called “Tacana,” during which the intelligence agency explored using pigeons fitted with tiny cameras to spy on Soviet Union sites. Tuesday’s release was meant as a “kind of aerial protest piece,” the release says, against the Democratic candidates in Las Vegas ahead of Wednesday’s debate.

President Trump also arrived in Las Vegas on Tuesday night. He is scheduled for an event at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Headquarters on Thursday and a campaign rally on Friday. In January, about one month after the first cowboy pigeons were spotted in Las Vegas, a sombrero-wearing pigeon was seen in Reno. The Las Vegas cowboy pigeons entered international stardom after going viral, though the identity of the person (or persons) that put those cowboy hats on the pigeons remains a mystery.
