If you grew up on a farm/ranch then you may have heard the term "conversion" or "converters". Animals convert energy from a form unusable or unpalatable to humans, into a form that is nourishing and palatable.
Chickens and ducks convert bugs and grass and seeds into eggs and meat.
Cattle convert grass and forage into milk and meat.

Directly fertilizing crops with human waste (shit) risks spreading disease. Composting the shit converts it into chemicals that plants can also uptake, less the risk of disease. Human urine can actually be used on a garden safely if not too concentrated. Anon has a book on this and has used the technique when nitrogen was needed to improve the soil. But a better use of urine is to moisten a compost pile and speed the digestion by bacteria and fungi of cellulose and other raw materials into rich humus.
Organic gardening is easy, and effective, and you can learn a lot from books and internet. You will learn even moar when you try hands on.
