President Donald Trump granted clemency to eleven people Tuesday in what mainstream media outlets are calling a β€œclemency spree,” but many are ignoring the several women β€” including women of color β€” who were granted relief from long prison sentences, in pursuit of headlines tying Trump to β€œcorruption” and β€œwhite collar crime.”

Trump did, of course, grant commutations and pardons to several high-profile individuals, including former governor Rob Blagojevich, former New York police commissioner Bernard Kerick, financier Mike Milken, and pro-football Hall of Famer Edward DeBartolo, Jr.

But while media focused on creating a common thread tying these commutations and pardons together in an effort to, it seems, connect them back to Trump campaign operative Roger Stone’s ongoing trial, the media missed several other pardons and commutations granted to women who took minor roles in criminal enterprises yet received major Federal prison sentences.

Angela Stanton received a pardon, at the behest of Alaveda King (neice of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.), after serving β€œa 6-month home confinement sentence for her role in a stolen vehicle ring.” After doing her time, Stanton went on to become an advocate for former inmates, pioneering β€œre-entry” programs for those returning to the workforce from a stint in prison,” focusing on the critical role of families in the process,” according to the White House’s official statement on the matter.

Trump, it seems, built on his earlier criminal justice reform initiatives in deciding to commute the sentences of several other women, including Crystal Munoz, who served her time with Alice Marie Johnson β€” the woman found herself free after forging a friendship with Kim Kardashian West who, subsequently, took her case to the White House. Johnson came to consider Munoz β€œone of her prison daughters,” she told The Associated Press, and urged the President to grant her the same mercy he’d granted Johnson.

β€œWe did a lot of crying and a lot of praying together for things to change for us,” Johnson said.

Munoz gave birth in Federal custody, while awaiting trial on charges of β€œconspiring to distribute [marijuana].” She was sentenced to 20 years in prison despite contending that β€œher only role was drawing a map others allegedly used in moving the drugs from Mexico to Texas.” The AP reports that Munoz received ineffective counsel at her trial and suffered dire consequences.

Documents obtained by MEE reveal how British contractors recruited Syrian citizen journalists - often without their knowledge - to promote 'moderate opposition'

 

The British government covertly established a network of citizen journalists across Syria during the early years of the country’s civil war in an attempt to shape perceptions of the conflict, frequently recruiting people who were unaware that they were being directed from London.

 

A number of leaked documents seen by Middle East Eye show how the propaganda initiative began in 2012 and gathered pace the following year, shortly after the UK parliament refused to authorise British military action in Syria.

 

Drawing upon British, American and Canadian funding, UK government contractors set up offices in Istanbul and Amman, where they hired members of the Syrian diaspora, who in turn recruited citizen journalists inside Syria.

 

These journalists, many of them young, were commissioned to produce TV footage, radio programmes, social media, posters, magazines and even children’s comics.

 

While many Syrians turned spontaneously to media activism from the start of the war, the documents describe the way in which the British government sought to guide some of their output, seeing citizen journalism as a way of covertly influencing Syrian audiences.

 

The papers also make clear that those people who were recruited were often unaware that they were part of a British propaganda initiative.

What happened when Bill Clinton met then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch on the west side of Phoenix Sky Harbor airport between 7 and 8 PM on June 27, 2016? Just days before Hillary Rodham Clinton was to be interviewed by the FBI about her mishandling of classified emails, the former president intercepted the AG on her plane. Was it just a β€œcasual” and β€œunscheduled” encounter, as the head spokesperson for the Department of Justice maintained? Or was the former president stalking Lynch to urge her to go easy on his wife?

 

We have a new window on what may have gone on inside Lynch’s FBI jet after it landed β€” the story as told by the former attorney general to lawmakers and staff of the House Judiciary Committee and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Her account could easily be seen as self-serving, but it was given under penalty of perjury.

 

Lynch was questioned behind closed doors on Dec. 19, 2018 in the Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2131. The interview has remained private; no transcript of it has been released. But RealClearInvestigations has obtained a copy. In it, Lynch describes an encounter with Bill Clinton that is both perplexing and preposterous, a story that defies innocent explanation.

 

An Awkward Encounter

The day after the tarmac meeting, Lynch held a press conference to talk about local police policies. Christopher Sign, the morning anchor for the ABC affiliate in Phoenix, asked her what she had been talking with Bill Clinton about on her jet the evening before. She said it was just pleasantries: β€œOur conversation was a great deal about his grandchildren,” she said to reporters. They also talked about their travels, golf, former Attorney General Janet Reno and West Virginia. β€œIt was primarily social,” Lynch said, assuring everyone β€œthere was no discussion of any matter pending for the [Justice] department or any matter pending for any other body.”

 

Lynch told much the same story to lawmakers behind closed doors. It also tracked closely with the way she described the meeting to Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz. But there is a significant difference between the description of the meeting Lynch shared with the reporters and the version Lynch presented on Capitol Hill. She told the press their meeting had been a pleasant happenstance; by contrast, the meeting she described to lawmakers was a forced and awkward encounter in which Bill Clinton was strangely eager to meet with her, so eager that he made it up the stairs and onto her plane without being invited. And once aboard, he simply could not be persuaded to leave, chatting and chatting and chatting, strangely oblivious to Lynch’s repeated hints he had overstayed his welcome.

British staff running these offices were told that their Syrian employees were permitted to talk to British journalists – as spokespeople for the Syrian opposition – but only after receiving clearance from officials at the British consulate in Istanbul.

 

One of the responsibilities of the press offices set up covertly by the British government under the terms of these contracts was to β€œmaintain an effective network of correspondents/stringers inside Syria to report on MAO [moderate armed opposition] activity”.

 

In this way, the British government was able to exert behind-the-scenes influence over conversations that the UK media was having with individuals who presented themselves as Syrian opposition representatives.

According to the way the airport tarmac meeting is described by those trying to downplay the get-together, Lynch and Clinton somehow crossed paths coming to and from Phoenix on their private planes. Typical was a β€œperson familiar with the meeting” who tried to explain it to the press like this: β€œThe former president, who was departing the airport on a private jet, noticed Lynch’s plane had arrived and decided to go over and say hello.” The suggestion was that it was a chance meeting. It was anything but.

 

Loretta Lynch described to the joint House committees landing on a hot evening in Phoenix, where the next day she would be visiting the local police department. She explained there was a standard protocol for getting everyone off the plane: They would always deplane in a series, β€œsecurity detail first, my staff [next], and then I would leave and go immediately to the car.” Security exited, then the staff, all as per normal. But before Lynch and her husband, Stephen Hargrove, who was travelling with her, could get out of the plane there was an interruption of the standard procedure.

 

β€œAs we walked to the door, the head of my security detail came to me and said: β€˜Ma'am, I've been informed … that former President Clinton is also at the airfield and would like to say hello.’” According to Lynch’s testimony, she didn’t have the opportunity to think about whether that was a good idea: Her head of security had barely finished talking and β€œformer President Clinton was standing in the doorway of the plane.” He proceeded to work the room (or perhaps we should say the fuselage). After a cursory hello to Lynch and her husband, Clinton greeted her β€œsecurity detail officer, shook his hand, and then stepped toward the back of the plane” where there β€œwere two members of the flight crew.” Clinton lavished them with attention. According to the former AG’s congressional interview, Clinton β€œsaid hello to them, shook their hand, spent about five minutes talking with both of those two individuals.”

 

At last the former president came back up front where Lynch β€œsort of reintroduced him to my husband.” Clinton β€œspoke with him for several minutes, asked about our trip, asked about our flight,” and otherwise made anodyne small talk such as β€œhappy to meet you, haven't met you before.”

 

β€œThere had been press that they had a new grandchild,” Lynch recalled of the Clintons. β€œI said: Congratulations on your new grandchild. And we were standing up, and he turned and said, thank you very much, and started talking about that. Asked my husband if we had children. They began talking about children and kids.”

 

'A Little Under 10 Minutes'

 

Lynch said that between herself and her husband, they spoke with Clinton β€œmaybe eight or nine minutes, a little under 10 minutes.” They had said a lot of nothing and yet, according to Lynch, it was β€œthe only real conversation I've ever had with him.” Add the time the former president spent schmoozing the staff and he was on the plane for β€œprobably about 20 minutes.”

 

But how are you and the kids? – even if repeated – isn’t quite enough to fill 10 minutes of tarmac time. What else, Lynch was asked on Capitol Hill, did you talk about? β€œWell, he asked what brought me to Phoenix,” she said. β€œHe asked how my travels were, and I mentioned looking forward to seeing the police department.” Clinton β€œalso asked had I been traveling a lot. I mentioned that I had just gotten back from China but had cut that trip short to come back and go down to Florida because of the Pulse Nightclub shooting.” They talked about the failing health of Janet Reno, who would die the day before Election Day. β€œAnd that was probably the extent, the largest part of my conversation with him.”

 

Strange. One can understand that Lynch needs to maintain that there was no conversation about Hillary’s email predicament β€” she’s repeated that enough times that there’s no going back. But if they didn’t have that to talk about, they didn’t have much else to say to one another. It would be one thing if theirs had been a random run-in. But do ex-presidents really just appear at the perfect time to talk to the perfect person who is perfectly positioned to make an imperfect situation go away? If the talk was really about nothing, why was Bill Clinton so eager to have it? So eager that he was at the airport in time to catch Lynch before she got off her plane; so eager that ascending the stairs to the airplane doorway, he had all but pushed past Lynch’s head of security. US lost track of $715m in weapons sent to anti-Daesh allies in Syria

 

The US government has failed to account for nearly $715.8 million in weapons and equipment funnelled to its Syrian allies involved in the multinational counter-offensive against Daesh, according to a report released on Tuesday by the Department of Defence.

 

Officials with the Special Operations Joint Task Force-Operations Inherent Resolve (SOJTF-OIR), which is part of the Combined Joint Task Force (the US military’s mission in Syria) reportedly β€œdid not maintain comprehensive lists of all equipment purchased and received” to supply its allies fighting against Daesh, known as CTEF-S equipment in the fiscal years 2017 and 2018.

 

In addition to failures in accounting for the weapons purchased and received, they were also not stored properly, causing many to rust or become vulnerable to theft. β€œThis occurred because SOJTF-OIR personnel did not divest or dispose of CTEF-S equipment, which led to overcrowding at the BPC Kuwait warehouse”.

 

The report however did not indicate whether weapons intended for vetted partners may have found their ways into the wrong hands. According to the Military Times, some of the equipment has ended up in the hands of Daesh and Al-Qaeda affiliates due to β€œbattlefield losses by partner forces and as a result of Islamic State [Daesh] fighters plundering the armories of U.S.-backed groups in early 2014 as the jihadi group surged across Iraq and Syria”.

 

The Pentagon’s Syrian Train and Equip Program which reportedly cost $500 million was the public-facing part of a two-pronged effort in arming opposition groups in a bid to overthrow the Syrian government and to push back Daesh. According to an updated Congressional Research Service (CRS) report, the program has seen more than $2.3 billion allocated towards it between fiscal years 2015 and 2021.

 

Meanwhile, the CIA’s own operation in arming Syrian opposition, Timber Sycamore, which included Saudi involvement has resulted in terrorist groups armed by both parties fighting one another in Syria. Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, a rebranded Al-Qaeda affiliate, was one such group benefitting from the CIA operation.

β€’ Amid piles of panties headed for a Victoria's Secret near you, the veiled Palestinian women who stitch them together here say they now know that their workplace is not an Israeli factory.

β€’ But from the day it opened, that is how the biggest garment plant in Jordan has been denounced in this northern city and across a country in which hostility toward Israel is more fierce than at any time since the countries made peace in 1994.

β€’ And it certainly does not help that among the finishing touches the young Arab seamstresses put on each of the 150,000 pairs of panties that make their way to United States each month is a label that reads Made in Israel.

β€’ This is our work, not theirs, protested Samira Melhem, 32.

β€’ Someday, the factory may prove a model of the kind of across-the-border partnership that can bind Israel and Jordan together. But as a dividend of the quest for peace, it has run into unexpected resistance.

β€’ That there is some intercourse with Israel is repulsive to many here in these difficult times, acknowledged Omar Z. Salah, the 30-year-old chairman of a Jordanian company that sought out the joint venture and has found itself tarred with a swirl of wild charges in Jordan's tabloid press.

β€’ Among the stories that found their way into print was that Israeli overseers had ordered the all-female staff of 350 to work as prostitutes by night. Another said young women were being beaten.

β€’ Only by inviting husbands and brothers to visit the factory for themselves did managers begin to put suspicions to rest. As they tried to make clear, they themselves are Jordanian and their partner is not Israeli but the American-based corporate giant Sara Lee.

β€’ The arrangement, conceived by Mr. Salah after Jordan and Israel signed a peace treaty in October 1994, is based squarely on competitive advantage. With the border between the two countries to be opened, he argued, companies like Sara Lee ought to shift production to Jordan, where costs are about 50 percent of what they would be in Israel.

β€’ As part of a joint venture, Mr. Salah and his partners won a deal that divided underwear production between an Israeli factory and his new one, with fabric cut into patterns in Israel and then trucked to Jordan for stitching by the Palestinian women who work for an average wage of about $100 a month.

β€’ And since the plant opened in February, some 275,000 panties, boxers and T-shirts have taken shape in Jordan each month before being trucked back to Israel, and shipped to the United States to be sold under brands that, in addition to Victoria's Secret, include Donna Karan, J. Crew and Bali.

β€’ But because Israel, and not Jordan, is guaranteed free-trade access to American markets, no mention of Jordan appears on the underwear labels, a practice permitted under United States law. In keeping with that law, a substantial share of production must also remain on the Israeli side of the border, an arrangement that has struck many Jordanians in recent months as increasingly intolerable.

β€’ Since the election in May of Benjamin Netanyahu as Israel's Prime Minister, King Hussein of Jordan, for two years Israel's loudest champion in the Arab world, has gradually become a critic. And with his warning against Israel's apparent drift from the path toward peace with the Palestinians, the King still sounds effusive when compared with other prominent Jordanians.

β€’ By this month the Jordanian Government had decided to postpone as premature a scheduled trade conference with Israeli officials. And last week, when Israeli diplomats opened their new embassy in Amman, the Jordanian capital, the highest-ranking Jordanian official on hand was the Director General of the Foreign Ministry. Among a handful of private businessmen who attended was Mr. Salah, a member of a wealthy Jordanian family.

β€’ Beginning next month, his company, the Century Investment Group, is to expand its venture to produce up to 150,000 bras a month, pre-cut in Israel and stitched in Jordan for labels including Victoria's Secret and the Gap. Business is pretty good, Mr. Saleh said, but the situation is pretty bad. It grows like a monster every day.

The small talk exhausted, according to Lynch, she tried to make a gracious exit and things got weirder still.

 

β€œAnd at one point, I said: Well, you know, thank you very much. It's lovely seeing you. We have to move on.” And Bill Clinton … kept talking. β€œHe made a comment about where he was headed to next and started talking about his next location. He finished that anecdote. I don't recall what it was about.

 

β€œAnd I, again, said: Well, you know, thank you very much. It's been nice seeing you. You know, we have to move on,” Lynch told lawmakers. And presented with those unmistakable, blunt cues, what did the man so famous for his mesmerizing social skills do? β€œHe continued chatting. He continued talking.”

 

Clinton chatted about what he was doing in Phoenix. β€œWas he doing anything campaign-related that was part of that discussion?” Judiciary Committee majority staffer Zach Somers asked Lynch. β€œHe didn't share that with me,” she said. β€œHe said he had been playing golf.”

 

So let’s get this straight. Hillary Clinton is in the midst of a campaign for president and facing the harrowing prospect (or at least a prospect that would be harrowing for the less-connected) of an FBI interview to determine whether she was to be criminally prosecuted. And her husband β€” the rarest of tacticians who had mastered both those challenges β€” is off…golfing? And on a 110-degree summer day in Arizona when few are to be found out on the scorched greens?

 

Christopher Sign, the TV anchor who broke the tarmac story in Phoenix, doesn’t buy the golfing assertion: β€œTo this day I have never found a single person who claims or corroborates any story that Bill Clinton played golf on this particular trip,” Sign tells RealClearInvestigations. β€œI feel strongly the former president did not play golf on this visit.” Justice IG Horowitz reported that during his day in Phoenix Bill Clinton attended several campaign fundraisers.

 

Back in the plane, Loretta Lynch was still stuck with a former president who wouldn’t stop talking. β€œI said that we had to move on,” Lynch recalled. Clinton was unmoved by her plea to wrap it up: He β€œsaid he was moving on someplace as well. And I don't recall if he was going to West Virginia, but somehow he ended up talking about West Virginia. And he had sort of an anecdote about West Virginia coal mining that was sort of a historical issue. It wasn't something that I was familiar with.”

 

The way Lynch tells it, you can see her struggling to keep her eyelids open. Bravely she made another escape attempt: β€œAnd we were talking about, again, moving on,” Lynch testified. Finally someone came to her rescue: β€œAnd at one point a staffer of mine came on the plane to get me. And at that point the president was β€” Mr. Clinton was then talking about Brexit. He was saying that either he had been reading an article about Brexit, and he made a reference β€” he quoted something that had been in The Times β€” The New York Times, I should say β€” about Brexit when my staffer was stepping on to the plane.”

ANKARA, February 20. /TASS/. The Syrian air force has carried out strikes on the Turkish army’s positions in the Idlib province, killing two troops, Turkish Presidential Spokesman Fahrettin Altun said on Twitter on Wednesday.

 

 

"Our troops deployed to Idlib to ensure peace and carry out humanitarian activities came under the [Assad] regime’s attack, which killed two troops and left another five wounded," the tweet reads.

 

The Turkish Defense Ministry earlier issued a statement about an airstrike on the Turkish positions. At the same time, the ministry reported that "over 50 [Syrian] regime soldiers were killed, five tanks, two armored vehicles, a self-propelled artillery gun and two military pickups were destroyed."

 

Turkey’s Anadolu news agency informed earlier on Thursday that the so-called armed Syrian opposition had launched an operation against government forces in the Idlib province. According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), Syrian troops managed to thwart the opposition’s attacks.

Top Pentagon official leaving Trump administration

 

A top Defense Department official is set to leave the administration following a resignation request from President Trump.

 

John Rood, undersecretary of Defense for policy at the Pentagon, will exit his post by the end of the month, Pentagon press secretary Alyssa Farah said. James Anderson, a senior Pentagon official, will serve as Rood's acting replacement until a permanent one is confirmed.

 

Rood, who assumed his position in 2018, serves as a principal adviser to Defense Secretary Mark Esper and coordinates national security policy within the Pentagon as part of his role. He also oversees areas that deal with the country's partnership with foreign allies.

Rood indicated that his resignation was in response to a request from the president, according to a copy of his resignation letter shared by Breaking Defense.

 

"Senior administration officials appointed by the president serve at the pleasure of the president, and therefore, as you have requested I am providing my resignation," he wrote.

 

Trump in a tweet Wednesday morning thanked Rood for his service.

CNN first reported that Rood was leaving the department after losing support among national security officials.

 

Rood played a role in initially certifying to Congress that Ukraine had taken actions to make institutional reforms within its government in order to receive $250 million in security assistance from the U.S.

 

β€œThe United States remains committed to assisting with the implementation of these reforms to bolster Ukraine’s ability to defend its territorial integrity in support of a secure and democratic Ukraine,” Rood wrote, according to a letter previously obtained by The Hill.

 

The letter undermined the justification that some Trump administration members gave for withholding military assistance. Some officials had said that the block in funding was a product of a push for corruption reform.

 

Rood reportedly also emailed Esper just hours after Trump's July 25 phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In the email, Rood informed the Pentagon chief of an upcoming meeting that would address Trump's "concern about endemic corruption in Ukraine and his reported view that US should cease providing security assistance," according to CNN.

 

Rood asserted that "placing a hold on security assistance at this time would jeopardize this unique window of opportunity and undermine our defense priorities with a key partner in the strategic competition with Russia."

 

Trump's move to block military aid for Ukraine and press the country's president for investigations of his political rivals was at the center of the House impeachment. The Senate voted to acquit the president of the impeachment articles.

 

Rood had reportedly become a source of frustration among Defense officials, who alleged in a Foreign Policy article in December that he was responsible for a toxic work environment.

 

The magazine reported that nearly a dozen former and current Pentagon officials said Rood was to blame for an increase in departures.

 

Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said at the time that the department had the β€œutmost confidence” in Rood.

Is Lynch’s story believable? Maybe. But if it’s true, then Bill Clinton’s small talk was such excruciating torture it might be only an exaggeration to say it could be used to drill in on the question β€œIs it safe?” Lynch’s story may be improbable but its purpose may be less to persuade than to make her sympathetic β€” a victim, even.

 

Lynch was asked whether at some point the thought occurred to her, β€œMaybe I shouldn't have this conversation”?

 

β€œAs we β€” as his conversation continued, I just felt that the conversation was continuing for too long,” Lynch replied. β€œAnd I thought that not only did we need to move on, he didn't seem to have any particular purpose in talking to me, you know, there was nothing specific he seemed to want to say. And after you exchange pleasantries, really people typically go on about their days, or about their evenings in this case.”

 

It 'Went On Too Long'

 

If Bill Clinton wasn’t behaving the way people typically behave, what was he up to?

 

It wasn’t just that β€œthe conversation went on too long,” Lynch told Congress; she had a terrible realization: β€œAs we were leaving I felt that it was β€” it certainly was going to raise a potential issue in the appearance of how the case was being handled.”

 

How much of an issue? James Comey was FBI director at the time of the tarmac meeting. Much later β€” just two days before Lynch’s closed door testimony on Capitol Hill β€” Comey gave his own private congressional interview. He claimed to have been so troubled by the Lynch/Clinton get-together that he considered calling for a special counsel to investigate. But, he decided a special counsel wasn’t necessary. Which left him in the position to usurp from Lynch, with his July 5, 2016 press conference, the decision of whether or not to prosecute Hillary.

 

Let’s assume for the sake of argument that Lynch was not lying to Congress. If so, it seems to have dawned on her rather late that Clinton had compromised her, had put her in a jam. What if that’s exactly what he set out to do? It would explain the ex-president’s otherwise inexplicable behavior β€” how one of the great glad-handers of all time leapt onto a plane in order to bore everyone to death. He was anything but clueless; he was demonstrating to the attorney general that he could cause her real trouble, and could do so with cheerful impunity. He didn’t have to make heavy-handed threats or otherwise put himself at risk of an obstruction of justice charge. No, all he had to do was darken the airplane doorway and prattle on with seeming obliviousness about grandkids, travel plans, coal mining, golf, and Brexit.

 

In the wake of that bravura performance, Lynch had to convene working groups to determine whether she needed to recuse herself from the Hillary probe. She would untimately decide against recusal, but said she would accept the decision of career staff and the FBI on whether to prosecute.

 

What a mess. And what a splendidly innocent way of causing mayhem and conveying menace. Give Bill Clinton his due β€” the man is no amateur.

PM says he’s lifted freeze to build Givat Hamatos neighborhood in East Jerusalem

 

11 days before election, Netanyahu announces approval for 3,000 homes for Jews in project that would cut off Palestinian areas in capital from West Bank

 

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Thursday that he had lifted restrictions against the construction of the controversial Givat Hamatos neighborhood in East Jerusalem, saying that 3,000 homes would be built for Jewish residents there, in addition to another 2,200 housing units for Jews in the nearby Har Homa neighborhood.

 

The significance of Netanyahu’s approval was not immediately clear, given that the final authorization for construction in Givat Hamatos had been given by his office six years ago.

 

The plan for construction in Givat Hamatos was first brought forward in 2012, earning widespread condemnation in the international community over its cutting off of the Palestinian neighborhoods of Beit Safafa and Sharafat from the West Bank, in a manner that critics said placed a nail in the coffin of a two-state solution based roughly on the pre-1967 lines.

 

Thursday appeared to have been the first time Netanyahu publicly admitted to having placed a building freeze on the Givat Hamatos plan, explaining that he had been under immense pressure from countries abroad not to build there.

 

Addressing reporters in front of Har Homa along with Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion and Tourism Minister Yariv Levin, Netanyahu said that in addition to the 2,200 units he had signed off on for the neighborhood behind him and the 3,000 units for Givat Hamatos, he had also green-lit 1,000 homes for Palestinians in the neighborhood of Beit Safafa, which has long suffered from a housing crisis.

 

β€œCoexistence in Jerusalem,” he declared. β€œJerusalem is being built and expanded. We are connecting all parts of the united Jerusalem. I have removed all the restrictions, and now Jerusalem is being built under my authority.”

Senate Democrats Ask To Investigate Communication Between DOJ & Giuliani

 

Democrats in the Senate have signed off on a letter asking Inspector General Michael Horowitz to expand their investigation into Rudy Giuliani and the Justice Department’s recent communications regarding the Biden’s.

 

They first started calling for an investigation into the President’s β€œpersonal lawyer,” after Barr confirmed that the Department would be reviewing information on the Biden’s received from Giuliani during a press conference.

 

Federal prosecutors in New York have already contacted witnesses and and requested additional documents as part of the investigation.

 

Rudy Giuliani submitted the information he gathered through the Justice Department’s new β€œintake process,” which is being used to receive information on the Biden’s from the public.

 

Ranking member Dianne Feinstein and nine other Democrats claimed in the letter β€œthat Mr. Giuliani’s interactions with senior DOJ officials may have unduly influenced or created conflicts of interests with regard to DOJ activities.”

 

β€œThese reports suggest that Mr. Giuliani has used his relationship with the President, including his representation of the President as a private citizen, to gain improper access to attorneys and investigators in the agency, particularly political appointees who serve at the President’s pleasure.”

 

β€œAt a minimum, Mr. Giuliani’s access creates an appearance of impropriety that could undermine trust in the agency,” they added.

 

This request to the inspector general to expand their probe comes as the result of Nadler’s four-page-letter sent to the Justice Department, where he demanded information on the Justice Department’s announcement of their new β€œintake process.”

 

In this letter, House Judiciary Chairman Nadler claimed the DOJ accepting information from Giuliani β€œwould seem to be a significant departure from traditional channels,” and it raises β€œconflicts of interest-both for the Department, generally, and for you [Barr], specifically.”

 

Attorney General Barr replied to Nadler on Wednesday, saying β€œWe had established an intake process in the field so that any information coming in about Ukraine could be carefully scrutinized by the department and its intelligence community partners.”

Former Rep. Katie Hill breaks silence months after resigning from Congress: 'I made the right call'

 

Former Rep. Katie Hill said she doesn't regret stepping down from her seat in Congress last year, but she does believe the fact that she was a bisexual woman played a huge part in "sensationalizing" the scandal.

 

"We haven't seen as many of the sex scandals with women," Hill told ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos in an exclusive interview that aired Thursday on "Good Morning America."

 

The House Ethics Committee announced in October 2019 that it would investigate Hill for allegedly having a sexual relationship with one of her congressional staffers – an allegation she continued to deny to Stephanopoulos. The alleged relationship would have been a violation of House rules that were established in February 2018 following the #MeToo movement.

 

Hill has admitted to – and apologized for – having a relationship with a campaign staffer when she was running for Congress in 2018. That relationship was not covered by House rules since Hill was not a member of Congress at the time.

 

'Biggest mistake': Hill on not setting boundaries during her 2018 campaign

 

During the interview, Hill told Stephanopoulos it was "absolutely" her biggest mistake to have a relationship with a campaign staffer.

 

Even though she had no political experience when she began running for Congress, she said she should have set employer-employee boundaries.

 

"You're truly in the trenches with these – this very small team," she said. "Where I think I made the biggest mistake was not setting those boundaries from the very beginning."

Along with the relationship allegations, nude photos of her were published online without her consent. At the time, Hill claimed that her "abusive husband who seems determined to try to humiliate" her was behind it, and referred to the incident as "revenge porn."

Now, she tells Stephanopoulos that there is a problem with the term "revenge porn," but still believes her ex-husband was behind the initial photo leak.

 

"It implies A) that there's something to be taking revenge for, right?" Hill said. "That the woman maybe did something wrong in the first place. And pornography also could imply that – or could imply that it was – it was consensual, and it's not."

 

Representatives for Kenny Heslep, Hill's estranged husband, told ABC News he denies the allegations.

 

"Ms. Hill has made no allegations of abuse in her petition for dissolution," Heslep's lawyers told ABC News, saying he is asking for privacy during this moment. "Mr. Heslep denies any allegations of abuse or wrongdoing outright. The parties are currently in the process of negotiating an amicable settlement."

 

Hill's father, Mike Hill, released a public statement to defend his daughter last October. He called Heslep "evil" and said he hoped Hill would seek legal ramifications, citing California's Penal Code 647(j)(4), which outlaws distributing intimate images that would knowingly cause harm.

The senator also said legislation such as the Green New Deal and a new push by Democrats to ban fracking is too dangerous to even consider.

From at least 2000 to 2007, Epstein chaired a company registered in Bermuda called Liquid Funding Ltd. This entity was partially owned by the investment bank Bear Stearns, where Epstein had worked, according to the report. The bank’s collapse would help set in motion the 2008 financial crisis.

 

Epstein’s offshore company was loaded up with some of the financial products β€” like mortgage-backed securities and collateralized loan obligations β€” that would become synonymous with the financial excesses leading to the financial crisis.

 

According to the Miami Herald and McClatchy, Liquid Funding had commercial mortgages and investment-grade residential mortgages bundled into complex securities.

Nine Dead in Apparent Anti-Muslim Attack in Germany. Will It Lead to a Crackdown on Right-Wing Political Groups?

 

A man described by authorities as a "right-wing terrorist" attacked two shisha bars in the city of Hanau, Germany, killing nine people and injuring several others. After a short manhunt, police found the man in his apartment, dead of a gunshot wound. He had apparently murdered his 72-year-old mother before turning the gun on himself.

 

His name has not yet been released and police have identified him only as 43-year-old Tobias R. He apparently had a lot of far-right, anti-immigrant propaganda in his apartment and on his social media sites.

 

There are five people with what are being described as "life-threatening injuries." Shisha, or hookah bars, are popular with the immigrant community and some younger Germans.

 

German federal prosecutors are investigating the shooting as a terrorist attack. Meanwhile, in a strange and jarring "I told you so" statement, the Islamic Association made it clear they were the victims.

"Before this right-wing terror we had been warning and demanding for weeks and months to take a clear stand against right-wing agitation and Islamophobia," its statement said. "We had also warned that terror threatens us all – Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Our warnings were ignored. The terror has struck. It is now the time to stand together."

 

They are almost congratulating themselves for being "right." Very strange at a time of mourning for the rest of the German people.

 

Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned the "perpetrators" – there was one lone attacker, say police.

 

"It is still too early for a final evaluation. Everything is being done to clear up the background of these horrible murders to the last detail. But at present there is much evidence that the perpetrator acted out of right-wing extremist, racist motives – out of hatred against people of other origins, other beliefs or other outward appearances.

 

"Racism is a poison, hatred is a poison," Merkel said. "I think now especially of the families and friends of the murdered. None of us can measure the suffering that the perpetrators brought upon them. I mourn with them and express my deepest sympathy."

 

There is a real danger now of a crackdown on right-wing political groups, including the Alliance for Germany Party, whose recent success has threatened the hold on power of Merkel's governing coalition. For its part, the AfD vigorously condemned the murders.

 

"We believe that it is in the interests of the relatives of the victims if the crime and its background are clarified quickly," it added in a statement. "The AfD group has full confidence in the investigative authorities that they will solve the crime quickly and completely."

 

During a recent election in the German state of Thuringia, the AfD engineered a coup of sorts by working with Merkel's CDU centrist party to elect a state premiere, a member of the minor Free Democrats party. This so terrified authorities in Berlin they forced the Free Democrat premiere to resign and to hold another election.

 

The AfD is not the problem. The party does not encourage "hate" or violence, does not promote anti-Islamic views or antisemitism. But they are likely to continue to be the scapegoat for government policies that breed dissatisfaction in the refugee community and resentment among German citizens.

 

What ails Germany is not politics. It's bad government.

Looks to me like the whole point of the Roger Stone trial was to wake the public up to the judicial injustice.

Former NASCAR driver Candace Muzny Found Dead Inside Oklahoma City Home

 

Police initially described Muzny's death as 'suspicious,' but said there were no obvious signs of foul play, KOCO 5 reported. According to a report from the Medical Examiner's office, Muzny's death has been ruled an accidental drowning.

But a better use of urine is to moisten a compost pile and speed the digestion by bacteria and fungi of cellulose and other raw materials into rich humus.

New Study Shows How Eating a Western Diet Impairs Brain Function and Leads to Overeating

 

Could it be that our Western-style diet laden with saturated fats, added sugars, and processed grains could actually impair our brain functions while weighing us down with a tendency to continuously over-indulge?

 

According to researchers, this is very much the case. Gluttonous diets in the West could transform otherwise healthy and slim young people into mildly scatter-brained overeaters.

 

The new study, published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, is among the first studies looking into how the Western diet impairs memory and appetite control in humans.

 

The results of the research are shocking and show how high-fat, high-sugar diets caused volunteers to perform worse on memory tests while nursing a continuous craving for junk food even after they had finished a meal. In fact, the desire for junk food only grew after they had eaten the meal.

 

The research suggests that self-control in regards to food consumption is harder for those who cling to a Euro-American or Western diet, with the array of foods involved in the diet causing havoc for the hippocampusβ€”the part of the brain which regulates memory and appetite control.

 

Richard Stevenson, study co-author and psychology professor Macquarie University in Sydney, told the Guardian:

 

After a week on a Western-style diet, palatable food such as snacks and chocolate becomes more desirable when you are full.

 

This will make it harder to resist, leading you to eat more, which in turn generates more damage to the hippocampus and a vicious cycle of overeating.

 

To investigate the Western diet’s impact on humans, researchers recruited 110 participants aged 20-23 who were generally lean and healthy and stuck to a good diet. The group was split into one control group that ate their normal diet for a week, while the other team was assigned a calorie-heavy western-style diet filled to the brim with fast food and Belgian waffles.

 

At the beginning and end of the week both groups ate a breakfast in the lab that was bookended by word memory tests and rating how much they enjoy sugary foods like Froot Loops and Coco Pops, as well as how much they want to continue eating them.

 

Prof. Stevenson noted that their findings suggest the disruption of the hippocampus by the foods. He added:

 

The more desirable people find the palatable food when full, following the Western-style diet, the more impaired they were on the test of hippocampal function.
