Lufthansa suspends 7,100 flights in March, including to Israel

BERLIN (Reuters) - German airline group Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) said on Thursday it is cancelling about 7,100 flights up to the end of March due to lower demand and the spread of coronavirus. The group, which includes Swiss International Air Lines and Austrian Airlines, added it will reduce capacity by up to 25%. Among the affected flights are high-frequency connections in Germany and to Italy, which has reported thousands of coronavirus infections and is one of the hardest-hit countries in the world. Lufthansa also said it will suspend all flights to Israel, starting on Sunday, until March 28. Israel on Wednesday ordered travelers arriving from Germany, France, Spain, Austria and Switzerland to go into home quarantine over coronavirus concerns. Citizens from these countries will not be allowed into Israel unless they can show they made quarantine arrangements ahead of time.

Coronavirus hammers Asian airlines as passenger numbers plummet

KUALA LUMPUR/JAKARTA – Sharp falls in airline passenger numbers triggered by the rapid spread of the coronavirus will likely test the long-term viability of several Asian carriers already battling a long list of challenges. Most vulnerable are those airlines which rely heavily on the Chinese market, such as Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways, Malaysia's AirAsia Group, Singapore's Scoot, Philippine Airlines, and Garuda Indonesia. Analysis by CAPA already shows that the impact of the virus on airlines "has been sudden and ugly," with traditionally busy periods such as the upcoming Easter holidays in April also likely to be severely disrupted. According to CAPA, China's international seat numbers are already down by nearly 80% compared to last year, with domestic seat numbers down nearly 60%. Singapore's seat capacity is also well down, falling from 1.75 million last February to around 1.35 million.

UBS Considers Passing Negative Rates to More Clients

UBS Group AG is considering whether to impose fees on a wider group of savers as it seeks to share the burden of negative interest rates.

The Swiss bank is approaching clients holding less than the 2 million Swiss francs ($2.1 million) about paying for their deposits, people with knowledge of the matter said, asking not to be identified discussing private talks. That’s the current threshold at which charges currently kick in at the lender. Central banks around the world are reducing interest rates in response to slowing economic growth and the coronavirus outbreak. The Federal Reserve made an emergency interest rate cut of half a percentage point on Tuesday. Swiss banks are affected by both the European Central bank’s 0.5% negative rate and the Swiss National Bank’s minus 0.75% rate. UBS has so far set a relatively high bar for passing on the pain. Zurich-based rival Credit Suisse Group AG also charges clients with cash deposits of more than 2 million francs. Some retail lenders in Germany charge for deposits of more than 100,000 euros ($112,000) and Switzerland’s PostFinance AG sets the bar at more than 250,000 francs.

Negative rates were a main reason that UBS dropped its net new money target in January. UBS started a program this year to encourage clients to move out of cash into investments that are better protected from negative rates. If depositors don’t want to make those changes, UBS will consider charges “and it’s possible that they move their cash elsewhere,” Chief Financial Officer Kirt Gardner said on a call with analysts in January. “We are working through the details of that program and will announce more within the first quarter.”

Moving clients into investments may have become a harder sell after stocks dropped the most since the financial crisis last week, hurting investment portfolios.

G6=Gulfstream 6. I just shorten it. But yes I do believe you are correct. I've never seen anything come out of Beijing, military wise. Just a few C-17's from Canada and US floating around northern China southern Russia about a month ago.
