Global corporate losses from coronavirus to top $12 TRILLION – investor Ray Dalio

The economic damage from the Covid-19 outbreak will be unprecedented, according to the head of one of the world’s largest hedge funds Ray Dalio, who says global corporate losses from the epidemic will amount to $12 trillion.

“What’s happening has not happened in our lifetime before … What we have is a crisis,” Dalio told CNBC. “There will also be individuals who have very big losses… There’s a need for the government to spend more money, a lot more money… A lot of people are going to be broke.” Talking about US corporations he said they will lose as much as $4 trillion.

The founder of Bridgewater Associates explained that the US fiscal stimulus package should be $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion at a minimum, depending on the form of financial relief such as loan guarantees and credits.

Dalio said there’s an “inability of central banks to stimulate in a way that’s normal.” They have less capacity to ease monetary policies when interest rates have already hit the floor, he added.

“We are now at a point where there will have to be a debt restructuring and a monetization of that. We’re living in a different world like the 1930s in which 1930s, 1932 you have a devaluation of the dollar. You have the printing of money.”

The White House has announced this week a $1 trillion stimulus package that could help soften the blow of a sudden recession. The funds will include direct payments or tax cuts and small business assistance. The Federal Reserve has also unveiled plans to pump an additional $1 trillion into the US economy through asset purchases and cut interest rates to zero.

India & Russia plan to open new trade route via Iran despite threat of US sanctions

Opening a long-pending multi-modal transportation corridor via Iran will be a big boost for bilateral trade between Russia and India, but it’s not just the economy at stake. This is a bold move against the threat of US sanctions.

India’s state-owned Container Corporation of India (Concor) and Russian Railways Logistics Joint Stock Company (RZD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to transport cargo between India and Russia – based on a single invoice – via the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a 7,200-km multi-modal transportation network project cutting right across Central Asia, starting in Iran and ending in Astrakhan, Russia.

“Within three months, traders from India and Russia could move goods between the two countries through Iran,” Concor chairman V Kalyana Rama said last week.

The INSTC is a trilateral project jointly initiated by Russia, Iran and India in 2002. In order to operationalize a new strategic transit route bypassing Pakistan, India connected it to the Iranian port of Chabahar and built a new route connecting four major cities in Afghanistan by the end of 2016.

In October 2017, in a “pathbreaking” move, India shipped a consignment of wheat from Port Kandla in Gujarat to Afghanistan, via Chabahar.

The US was keen to promote an alternative route to Afghanistan bypassing Pakistan, so India was accorded a waiver for the Chabahar project from the US sanctions against Iran. This all changed suddenly following the unexpected killing of top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani by the US in January, and the imposition of fresh sanctions by the Trump administration against any entity dealing with Iran, particularly in the construction sector. At the time, it seemed unlikely that the INSTC would ever be operationalized without an official waiver from Washington.

Overcoming US sanctions

The sudden signing of the Russian-Indian MoU, just weeks after President Donald Trump’s historic visit to India, suggests that the US may have given just such a waiver for India – or perhaps that deepening Indo-US strategic ties may have emboldened New Delhi to move forward in activating the INSTC to connect with Russia through Iran.

In any case, trade via the INSTC will benefit exporters and importers in both India and Russia by lowering transit time and cost of transportation compared to the existing route via the Suez Canal. It will also cut down the shipping time sharply, to 25-28 days from the current 40 or so.

With all of the craziness being reported by the media, most of our fellow citizens believe that the media have overblown the actual risks of COVID-19, according to a survey from Pew Research.

Pew reported Wednesday that though 89% of Americans say they're following the coronavirus news closely, 62% of them believe the media have exaggerated the risks, with more than a third (37%) saying the risks have been "greatly exaggerated."

Nearly half (48%) of those polled said they have seen at least some made-up news about COVID-19.

epublicans are significantly more likely to hold this view, but it's not just GOPers — a group long distrustful of the national media — who feel the media have exaggerated the risks. Nearly half of Democrats feel the same.

Chloroquine Known as Effective Against Coronavirus Since 2005

The world economy is collapsing because of the terror and mounting death toll caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. But the anti-malarial drug chloroquine is effective both as a prophylactic and treatment for the virus – and the medical establishment has known about this since at least the SARS coronavirus outbreak in 2005. What the hell is going on?

Yesterday, I reported the existence of three studies, all claiming that chloroquine phosphate had proved effective in treating the COVID-19.

This has since been confirmed by a more recent open-label non-randomised clinical trial in France by Didier Raoult​ M.D/Ph.D et al, completed just days ago. The sample was small but the results were convincing.

As the summary reports:

100% of patients that received a combination of HCQ and Azithromycin tested negative and were virologically cured within 6 days of treatment.

In addition, recent guidelines from South Korea and China report that hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are effective antiviral therapeutic treatments for novel coronavirus.

But the story gets more extraordinary still. It turns out that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has known since at least 2005 that chloroquine is effective against coronaviruses.

In 2005, Martin J Vincent et al published a study in Virology Journal titled ‘Chloroquine is a potent inhibitor of SARS coronavirus infection and spread.’

Here are its findings:

Background

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is caused by a newly discovered coronavirus (SARS-CoV). No effective prophylactic or post-exposure therapy is currently available.

Results

We report, however, that chloroquine has strong antiviral effects on SARS-CoV infection of primate cells. These inhibitory effects are observed when the cells are treated with the drug either before or after exposure to the virus, suggesting both prophylactic and therapeutic advantage. In addition to the well-known functions of chloroquine such as elevations of endosomal pH, the drug appears to interfere with terminal glycosylation of the cellular receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2. This may negatively influence the virus-receptor binding and abrogate the infection, with further ramifications by the elevation of vesicular pH, resulting in the inhibition of infection and spread of SARS CoV at clinically admissible concentrations.

Conclusion

Chloroquine is effective in preventing the spread of SARS CoV in cell culture. Favorable inhibition of virus spread was observed when the cells were either treated with chloroquine prior to or after SARS CoV infection. In addition, the indirect immunofluorescence assay described herein represents a simple and rapid method for screening SARS-CoV antiviral compounds.

It ought to be no surprise that chloroquine is effective against both SARS and COVID-19. After all, they are both coronaviruses and COVID-19 has often been described in medical and research sources as SARS-2.

Chloroquine works by enabling the body’s cells better to absorb zinc, which is key in preventing viral RNA transcription – and disrupting the often fatal cytokine storm.

As at least one person has noticed, the implications of this are enormous. If the medical establishment – including CDC – has been aware of the efficacy of chloroquine in treating coronavirus for at least 14 years, why has it not been mass produced and made available sooner?

Sen. Lindsey Graham is using the coronavirus recovery bills to dramatically expand the award of EB-5 green cards to wealthy Chinese if they lend money to U.S. real estate investors and other companies, according to several activists and Politico magazine.

“How can people pushing this not see how politically explosive this is?” said Mark Krikorian, director of the Center for Immigration Studies. “An EB-5 increase would almost exclusively benefit Chinese: It is hard to imagine what they are thinking.”

The plan by Graham, (R-S.C.) was provided to Politico, which said it would “boost the number of [EB-5] visas offered to wealthy immigrants who invest money in the United States as it tries to boost a faltering economy amid the escalating coronavirus outbreak, according to four people familiar with the situation.” The Politico report added:

The proposal, which could be included in one of the Senate’s coronavirus rescue bills, would significantly boost the number of visas offered annually from 10,000 to 75,000 while halving the investment required to earn legal residence from $900,000 to $450,000, they say.

Half the recipients of the EB-5 visa program — investors and their families — come from China, according to a report by the Brookings Institution think tank. Many others come from South Korea and Taiwan.

Breitbart News asked Graham’s office for comment. The office responded by saying, “Check with the Majority Leader’s office. He is handling the package and what will/will not be included.”

Immigration reformers say they are astounded by Graham’s apparent willingness to have the GOP portray itself as covertly selling fast-track citizenship to wealthy Chinese migrants amid the mounting human toll and economic cost caused by China’s coronavirus.

“It is appalling – it is not even like in any tangential way related to the crisis we’re in,” Krikorian said, adding, “anybody who signs on to this is going to get some of the splatter.”

“Why on earth would they be going down this path? Who is telling them this is a good idea?” said Preston Huennekens, a lobbyist at the Federation for American Immigration Reform. Trump’s deputies reformed the EB-5 program in 2019 to cut corruption and to spread the spending outside coastal cities, he said, so any walk back would be really alarming, he said.

Instead of a serious push, “I hope it is a play” just to get political donations from the investment groups, said one source.

GOP leaders seem to be resisting special interest grabs by GOP and Democrat legislators. “The goal here is to deal with this emergency created by this epidemic,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said March 17. “Anything that doesn’t address that pandemic to me should not be considered.”

The Graham amendment would expand the EB-5 program, which awards EB-5 green cards and the promise of citizenship to foreign investors who lend money to private U.S. companies. The program is widely used in the real-estate sector by investors to raise construction funds.

Steven Mnuchin Pitches Direct Deposits of $1000 Per Person, $500 Per Child

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Thursday he wanted Congress to pass direct payments to American families suffering during the Chinese coronavirus crisis.

“I refer to this as checks in the mail, but it’s really money directly deposited,” Mnuchin said, during an interview with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo.

Mnuchin detailed a proposal to send $1000 to American adults and $500 per child — $3,000 for a family of four.

“Soon as Congress passes this, we get this out in three weeks and then six weeks later if the president still has a national emergency, we’ll deliver another $3,000,” he said.

The direct payments to Americans are part of a proposed $1 trillion coronavirus economic relief package proposed by President Donald Trump’s administration.

“This is not going to go on forever, we are going to beat this, and while we are doing that, we understand, there are impacts on hardworking Americans and the president is determined that we are going to support them,” Mnuchin said.

Mnuchin said $300 billion would be used for small businesses, helping them hire people and keep people on the payroll during the crisis, and repaying them with loan forgiveness.

“That’s 40 percent of the private workforce and we want to keep those people employed,” he said.

Stanford Professor: Data Indicates We’re Severely Overreacting To Coronavirus

In an analysis published Tuesday, Stanford’s John P.A. Ioannidis — co-director of the university’s Meta-Research Innovation Center and professor of medicine, biomedical data science, statistics, and epidemiology and population health — suggests that the response to the coronavirus pandemic may be “a fiasco in the making” because we are making seismic decisions based on “utterly unreliable” data. The data we do have, Ioannidis explains, indicates that we are likely severely overreacting.

“The current coronavirus disease, Covid-19, has been called a once-in-a-century pandemic. But it may also be a once-in-a-century evidence fiasco,” Ioannidis writes in an opinion piece published by STAT on Tuesday.

“Draconian countermeasures have been adopted in many countries. If the pandemic dissipates — either on its own or because of these measures — short-term extreme social distancing and lockdowns may be bearable,” the statistician writes. “How long, though, should measures like these be continued if the pandemic churns across the globe unabated? How can policymakers tell if they are doing more good than harm?”

The woefully inadequate data we have so far, the meta-research specialist argues, indicates that the extreme measures taken by many countries are likely way out of line and may result in ultimately unnecessary and catastrophic consequences. Due to extremely limited testing, we are likely missing “the vast majority of infections” from COVID-19, he states, thus making reported fatality rates from the World Health Organization “meaningless.”

“Patients who have been tested for SARS-CoV-2 are disproportionately those with severe symptoms and bad outcomes,” Ioannidis explains. With very limited testing in many health systems, he suggests, that “selection bias” may only get worse going forward.

The U.S. Government Wants Your Phone’s Location Data So It Can Track Coronavirus Outbreaks

The United States government “is in active talks with Facebook, Google and a wide array of tech companies and health experts,” according to the Seattle Times, looking for ways to use Americans cell phone metadata and other sources of location data to track outbreaks of the coronavirus and enforce quarantine, social distancing, and curfews if it becomes necessary.

“Public-health experts are interested in the possibility that private-sector companies could compile the data in anonymous, aggregated form, which they could then use to map the spread of the infection,” the Seattle Times notes. The information “could help officials predict the next hotspot or decide where to allocate overstretched health resources.”

Although the project is in its early stages, at the moment, the government and companies that collect this type of data believe they can keep it free of identifying information. Facebook, which spoke to other news outlets about possible data-sharing collaborations with the United States government also noted that they’ve engaged in such projects before, though not to combat a deadly disease.

“A task force created by tech executives, entrepreneurs and investors presented a range of ideas around disease mapping and telehealth to the White House during a private meeting Sunday,” Seattle Times says. “The discussions included representatives from tech giants; investors led by the New York-based firm Hangar and well-known Silicon Valley venture capitalist Ron Conway; public-health leaders from Harvard University; and smaller telehealth startups like Ro, two sources said.”

The United States would hardly be the first country to use cell phone and social media data to aid in the fight against the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, but it could be the first country to weight the benefits of curbing a public health crisis against a Constitutional right to privacy.

London Underground Shuts 40 Stations over Coronavirus

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that up to 40 stations on the London Underground will be closed to curtail travel in an effort to halt the spread of coronavirus.

The night tube and bus services will also be reduced in the capital, where it is spreading faster than in any other part of the country. Other public transport services will also be on limited services, including the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), TfL Rail, London Overground, and the south London Tram network.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson had asked Britons to self-isolate and work from home if possible. However, one key worker commuting on the Underground told the BBC that it seemed “a lot busier” on the Tubes than earlier in the week, saying: “It didn’t feel like people were staying at home.”

There have been 900 confirmed cases of the China-origin virus in London, with fatalities in the capital reaching 34. The virus’s spread in the city is weeks ahead of other parts of the country, and on Wednesday night, Prime Minister Johnson would not rule out enforcing a curfew on Londoners, putting the city into lockdown.

The government is preparing to pass emergency legislation on coronavirus which includes increasing police powers to detain those suspected of having the virus who refuse testing or isolation, as well as the power to shut down venues for public safety.

Recent reports have suggested that London could go into lockdown by this weekend. One source close to London Mayor Sadiq Khan told The Telegraph in a report published on Wednesday: “We expect a shutdown of London, but nobody in central Government is saying when that will be or what form it will take.”

Mr Johnson is set to chair another meeting of the national emergency COBRA meeting on Thursday to discuss proposals amidst concerns that people in London are not following the government’s advice, reports The Times. Such measures could include forcing pubs, cafes, and restaurants to close.

“This is not about arresting people on the street,” a government source told the newspaper of record. “This is about some simple measures to ensure that the current public health guidance is followed.”

On Thursday morning, however, a government spokesman told media that there is “zero prospect” of restrictions being put on travel in and out of London.

“There are no plans to close down the transport network in London and there is zero prospect of any restrictions being placed on travelling in and out of London,” the spokesman said.

Aside from TfL’s decision to shut some 40 stations, the government also said that it would not forcibly shut down London’s public transport system.

Such tests will make it possible to get an answer within two hours in almost any medical laboratory, which has the appropriate equipment," he said.

Sirazutdinov stressed that the company did not consider the project to be commercial, its task is to provide the country with a reliable tool for detecting the virus. He noted that the accuracy of the test system would be 90-95%.

He added, that in the event of a positive conclusion, "the new test system can be put into production in the immediate future." "Negotiations have been held with a number of partners regarding a potential contract to manufacture the test systems in the required amount," he said.

Nobel Prize Winner Who Predicted China Slowdown: Italy Nearing Slowdown, Israel Will Have 10 Deaths Max From Coronavirus

American-British-Israeli biophysicist Nobel Prize winner Michael Levitt, who accurately predicted the coronavirus (COVID-19) slowdown in China, said Wednesday that Italy is nearing its own slowdown in infection rates and predicted Israel will have no more than ten deaths from the virus.

“Italy is already half way through the disease,” the biophysicist said during a radio interview Wednesday, The Jerusalem Post reported. “There has been a decrease in growth in the number of deaths in Italy in the past 2-3 days.”

Levitt noted that coronavirus tests in South Korea “are 10 times more sensitive than in Italy.”

“If Italy measured cases like Korea, there would have been 10 times more cases,” he said, suggesting Italy’s fatality rate is likely lower than reported.

“South Korea is already in the slow-down phase, he said, and Italy is nearing the same point,” the Nobel Prize winner explained, according to The Jerusalem Post.

“To put things in proportion, the number of deaths of coronavirus in Italy is 10% of the number of deaths of influenza in the country between 2016-2017,” Levitt added.

With regard to Israel, Levitt endorsed precautions being taken against the virus, but noted said there is still “unjustified panic.”

“There is a lot of unjustified panic in Israel. I don’t believe the numbers here, everything is politics, not math,” he said, adding: “I will be surprised if number of deaths in Israel surpasses ten, and even five now with the restrictions.”

Levitt noted that the numbers regarding coronavirus testing are not “made up,” “but because the definition of a case in Israel keeps changing and it’s hard to evaluate the numbers that way.”

Chase to temporarily close 1,000 branches over coronavirus concerns

JPMorgan Chase is closing about a fifth of its bank branches to help contain the spread of COVID-19.

The finance giant will shutter about 1,000 Chase bank locations temporarily, according to a memo sent to employees Wednesday. The roughly 4,000 other branches will reduce their operating hours starting Thursday.

The bank is trying to balance its need to protect employees with “the fact that we are essential to the communities we serve,” said Thasunda Duckett, CEO of Chase Consumer Banking. “We are doing everything we can to step up for our country, our customers and for all of you.”

Coronavirus will teach us that a country without free national health care is severely handicapped. Millions of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. They cannot afford health care premiums, deductions, and copays. Millions have no insurance. This means millions of people infected with coronavirus who cannot get medical help. The morbidity from this is intolerable in any society.

Shutdowns associated with efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus will deny income to millions of Americans who live paycheck to paycheck. What do they do for food, shelter, transportation? You don’t have to think very long along these lines to see a very frightening scenario.

Globalism has taken down the ladders of upward mobility by exporting American middle class jobs to Asia. A population once able to save now lives on debt, the service of which is interrupted by recession/depression and by debt service absorbing all net disposable income.

Globalism has also reduced the survivability of our society by making it dependent on externally produced goods, the supply of which can be cut off by disruptions in other societies, by policy disagreements leading to sanctions, and by an inability to export enough to pay for imports, which is what the offshored production of US firms is.

The United States has an unprotected population and an economy in trouble. For years corporate executives have run the companies for the benefit of their bonuses, which are largely dependent on rises in their company’s share price. Consequently, profits and borrowings have been invested in buying back the companies’ shares and not in new investment in the businesses. Corporate indebtedness is extreme and will threaten many corporations and many jobs in a downturn. Boeing is a case in point.

Economist Michael Hudson has for many decades studied the use of debt-forgiveness to restart economies killed by debt burdens. Debt forgiveness for corporations has a different implication than debt forgiveness for individuals. For corporations, forgiving debts lets those who financialized and indebted the economy and the population off the hook. To avoid rewarding them for the catastrophe they produced and to prevent widespread public outcry and distrust, nationalization is implied for insolvent companies and banks.

Nationalization would be limited to insolvent companies and financial institutions and doesn’t mean that there would be no private companies or businesses. Additional nationalization could be used to prevent strategic companies from substituting their interests for national interests, which they do when they move American jobs and factories offshore. Pharmaceuticals could be nationalized along with health care. Energy which often sacrifices the environment to its profits could be considered for nationalization. A successful society has to have more driving it than private profit.

Can the common flu cause people in America and worldwide to lose their minds, and lose all ability to think? Apparently, that is the case, as Americans have gone insane over a new monster created out of thin air called coronavirus. I have anticipated a scenario such as this, and written about it for the past decade or more, but the response by the people of this country is more ridiculous than even I could have imagined. It is the most pathetic sight I have seen in my life.

Without any initial testing, without any proof, without any certainty as to what this new fake threat to all mankind actually is, the world is now in lockdown, and therefore very easy to control. A better plan for the globalists could not have been imagined, as the sheep get into line for sheering without any resistance or question. I have watched this take place, and it was structured incrementally, all along testing the gullibility and fear of the populace, and as it progressed, it became obvious to those perpetrating this lie that taking over the entire country was going to be a cakewalk.

What is happening now is exactly as Bill Gates previewed it in his idiocy called Event 201, which seems to have been the initial test and propaganda piece set in place to start this engine. This was no coincidence, regardless of what the mainstream media and globalists’ claim, but was an active exercise for what was to come. And yes, this is real conspiracy, not “conspiracy theory.”

I will not relent in my efforts to expose the fact that the U.S. economy has been decimated due to spending, debt, and money creation for many years. Considering the situation in 2008, when all markets should have failed, the current economic picture is not only far worse, but has reached the pinnacle of disaster. This economy cannot be saved by money printing, QE, or sending checks out to those that have been forcibly relieved of their jobs by government fiat. I firmly believe that a major factor in why this so-called pandemic was created is to shift blame for the impending economic collapse on this virus, and hide the fact that the Fed and central banks around the world completely destroyed the economy. Had the markets and economy been allowed to fail without any fake pandemic, the government and banking system would have been exposed for the criminal thieves they are. This could not be allowed to happen by the ruling elites. Hence, the flu will kill us all!

The coronavirus pandemic, which has ravaged portions of China and Italy, has arrived in the United States and our central planners have panicked. The governor of New Jersey is threatening to ban all travel after dark. And the mayor of New York City is threatening to ban all travel all the time.
