Ive been monitoring the "official" numbers of COVID-19 in canada via the government website.

cases arent that high, but a few things stick out to me. the number of confirmed cases have nearly trippled since sunday. BC and ON have the most cases and have been increasing by double digits daily. but they have not been reporting any "probable cases" at all. this tells me that they have not been tracking the spread from confirmed cases. if they were, they would almost undoubtedly be finding people who have traveled, or been exposed to confirmed cases, and are showing symptoms. but they arent reporting that at all. the data indicates that all the new cases are previously unknown to officials and have received positive tests after becoming symptomatic and seeking treatment. this means that those cases have been spreading it for up to 3 weeks while they were asymptomatic and officials are not tracking their movements. canada has been letting anyone into the country till just days ago, only screening people and telling them to go home and self isolate if they are not showing symptoms. which many people would not bother to do. i expect the numbers in canada to start skyrocketing soon as 2nd and 3rd generation infections become symptomatic.

India & Russia plan to open new trade route via Iran despite threat of US sanctions

 

Opening a long-pending multi-modal transportation corridor via Iran will be a big boost for bilateral trade between Russia and India, but it’s not just the economy at stake. This is a bold move against the threat of US sanctions.

 

India’s state-owned Container Corporation of India (Concor) and Russian Railways Logistics Joint Stock Company (RZD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to transport cargo between India and Russia – based on a single invoice – via the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a 7,200-km multi-modal transportation network project cutting right across Central Asia, starting in Iran and ending in Astrakhan, Russia.

 

β€œWithin three months, traders from India and Russia could move goods between the two countries through Iran,” Concor chairman V Kalyana Rama said last week.

 

The INSTC is a trilateral project jointly initiated by Russia, Iran and India in 2002. In order to operationalize a new strategic transit route bypassing Pakistan, India connected it to the Iranian port of Chabahar and built a new route connecting four major cities in Afghanistan by the end of 2016.

 

In October 2017, in a β€œpathbreaking” move, India shipped a consignment of wheat from Port Kandla in Gujarat to Afghanistan, via Chabahar.

 

The US was keen to promote an alternative route to Afghanistan bypassing Pakistan, so India was accorded a waiver for the Chabahar project from the US sanctions against Iran. This all changed suddenly following the unexpected killing of top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani by the US in January, and the imposition of fresh sanctions by the Trump administration against any entity dealing with Iran, particularly in the construction sector. At the time, it seemed unlikely that the INSTC would ever be operationalized without an official waiver from Washington.

Overcoming US sanctions

 

The sudden signing of the Russian-Indian MoU, just weeks after President Donald Trump’s historic visit to India, suggests that the US may have given just such a waiver for India – or perhaps that deepening Indo-US strategic ties may have emboldened New Delhi to move forward in activating the INSTC to connect with Russia through Iran.

 

In any case, trade via the INSTC will benefit exporters and importers in both India and Russia by lowering transit time and cost of transportation compared to the existing route via the Suez Canal. It will also cut down the shipping time sharply, to 25-28 days from the current 40 or so.

Nearly half (48%) of those polled said they have seen at least some made-up news about COVID-19.

Yesterday, I reported the existence of three studies, all claiming that chloroquine phosphate had proved effective in treating the COVID-19.

 

This has since been confirmed by a more recent open-label non-randomised clinical trial in France by Didier Raoult​ M.D/Ph.D et al, completed just days ago. The sample was small but the results were convincing.

 

As the summary reports:

 

100% of patients that received a combination of HCQ and Azithromycin tested negative and were virologically cured within 6 days of treatment.

 

In addition, recent guidelines from South Korea and China report that hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are effective antiviral therapeutic treatments for novel coronavirus.

 

But the story gets more extraordinary still. It turns out that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has known since at least 2005 that chloroquine is effective against coronaviruses.

 

In 2005, Martin J Vincent et al published a study in Virology Journal titled β€˜Chloroquine is a potent inhibitor of SARS coronavirus infection and spread.’

 

Here are its findings:

 

Background

 

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is caused by a newly discovered coronavirus (SARS-CoV). No effective prophylactic or post-exposure therapy is currently available.

Results

 

We report, however, that chloroquine has strong antiviral effects on SARS-CoV infection of primate cells. These inhibitory effects are observed when the cells are treated with the drug either before or after exposure to the virus, suggesting both prophylactic and therapeutic advantage. In addition to the well-known functions of chloroquine such as elevations of endosomal pH, the drug appears to interfere with terminal glycosylation of the cellular receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2. This may negatively influence the virus-receptor binding and abrogate the infection, with further ramifications by the elevation of vesicular pH, resulting in the inhibition of infection and spread of SARS CoV at clinically admissible concentrations.

Conclusion

 

Chloroquine is effective in preventing the spread of SARS CoV in cell culture. Favorable inhibition of virus spread was observed when the cells were either treated with chloroquine prior to or after SARS CoV infection. In addition, the indirect immunofluorescence assay described herein represents a simple and rapid method for screening SARS-CoV antiviral compounds.

 

It ought to be no surprise that chloroquine is effective against both SARS and COVID-19. After all, they are both coronaviruses and COVID-19 has often been described in medical and research sources as SARS-2.

 

Chloroquine works by enabling the body’s cells better to absorb zinc, which is key in preventing viral RNA transcription – and disrupting the often fatal cytokine storm.

 

As at least one person has noticed, the implications of this are enormous. If the medical establishment – including CDC – has been aware of the efficacy of chloroquine in treating coronavirus for at least 14 years, why has it not been mass produced and made available sooner?

Sen. Lindsey Graham is using the coronavirus recovery bills to dramatically expand the award of EB-5 green cards to wealthy Chinese if they lend money to U.S. real estate investors and other companies, according to several activists and Politico magazine.

 

β€œHow can people pushing this not see how politically explosive this is?” said Mark Krikorian, director of the Center for Immigration Studies. β€œAn EB-5 increase would almost exclusively benefit Chinese: It is hard to imagine what they are thinking.”

 

The plan by Graham, (R-S.C.) was provided to Politico, which said it would β€œboost the number of [EB-5] visas offered to wealthy immigrants who invest money in the United States as it tries to boost a faltering economy amid the escalating coronavirus outbreak, according to four people familiar with the situation.” The Politico report added:

 

The proposal, which could be included in one of the Senate’s coronavirus rescue bills, would significantly boost the number of visas offered annually from 10,000 to 75,000 while halving the investment required to earn legal residence from $900,000 to $450,000, they say.

 

Half the recipients of the EB-5 visa program β€” investors and their families β€” come from China, according to a report by the Brookings Institution think tank. Many others come from South Korea and Taiwan.

 

Breitbart News asked Graham’s office for comment. The office responded by saying, β€œCheck with the Majority Leader’s office. He is handling the package and what will/will not be included.”

 

Immigration reformers say they are astounded by Graham’s apparent willingness to have the GOP portray itself as covertly selling fast-track citizenship to wealthy Chinese migrants amid the mounting human toll and economic cost caused by China’s coronavirus.

GOP leaders seem to be resisting special interest grabs by GOP and Democrat legislators. β€œThe goal here is to deal with this emergency created by this epidemic,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said March 17. β€œAnything that doesn’t address that pandemic to me should not be considered.”

 

The Graham amendment would expand the EB-5 program, which awards EB-5 green cards and the promise of citizenship to foreign investors who lend money to private U.S. companies. The program is widely used in the real-estate sector by investors to raise construction funds.

Steven Mnuchin Pitches Direct Deposits of $1000 Per Person, $500 Per Child

 

 

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Thursday he wanted Congress to pass direct payments to American families suffering during the Chinese coronavirus crisis.

β€œThis is not going to go on forever, we are going to beat this, and while we are doing that, we understand, there are impacts on hardworking Americans and the president is determined that we are going to support them,” Mnuchin said.

 

Mnuchin said $300 billion would be used for small businesses, helping them hire people and keep people on the payroll during the crisis, and repaying them with loan forgiveness.

β€œThe current coronavirus disease, Covid-19, has been called a once-in-a-century pandemic. But it may also be a once-in-a-century evidence fiasco,” Ioannidis writes in an opinion piece published by STAT on Tuesday.

β€œDraconian countermeasures have been adopted in many countries. If the pandemic dissipates β€” either on its own or because of these measures β€” short-term extreme social distancing and lockdowns may be bearable,” the statistician writes. β€œHow long, though, should measures like these be continued if the pandemic churns across the globe unabated? How can policymakers tell if they are doing more good than harm?”

The woefully inadequate data we have so far, the meta-research specialist argues, indicates that the extreme measures taken by many countries are likely way out of line and may result in ultimately unnecessary and catastrophic consequences. Due to extremely limited testing, we are likely missing β€œthe vast majority of infections” from COVID-19, he states, thus making reported fatality rates from the World Health Organization β€œmeaningless.”

The United States government β€œis in active talks with Facebook, Google and a wide array of tech companies and health experts,” according to the Seattle Times, looking for ways to use Americans cell phone metadata and other sources of location data to track outbreaks of the coronavirus and enforce quarantine, social distancing, and curfews if it becomes necessary.

β€œPublic-health experts are interested in the possibility that private-sector companies could compile the data in anonymous, aggregated form, which they could then use to map the spread of the infection,” the Seattle Times notes. The information β€œcould help officials predict the next hotspot or decide where to allocate overstretched health resources.”

Although the project is in its early stages, at the moment, the government and companies that collect this type of data believe they can keep it free of identifying information. Facebook, which spoke to other news outlets about possible data-sharing collaborations with the United States government also noted that they’ve engaged in such projects before, though not to combat a deadly disease.

β€œA task force created by tech executives, entrepreneurs and investors presented a range of ideas around disease mapping and telehealth to the White House during a private meeting Sunday,” Seattle Times says. β€œThe discussions included representatives from tech giants; investors led by the New York-based firm Hangar and well-known Silicon Valley venture capitalist Ron Conway; public-health leaders from Harvard University; and smaller telehealth startups like Ro, two sources said.”

London Underground Shuts 40 Stations over Coronavirus

 

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that up to 40 stations on the London Underground will be closed to curtail travel in an effort to halt the spread of coronavirus.

 

The night tube and bus services will also be reduced in the capital, where it is spreading faster than in any other part of the country. Other public transport services will also be on limited services, including the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), TfL Rail, London Overground, and the south London Tram network.

 

Prime Minister Boris Johnson had asked Britons to self-isolate and work from home if possible. However, one key worker commuting on the Underground told the BBC that it seemed β€œa lot busier” on the Tubes than earlier in the week, saying: β€œIt didn’t feel like people were staying at home.”

 

There have been 900 confirmed cases of the China-origin virus in London, with fatalities in the capital reaching 34. The virus’s spread in the city is weeks ahead of other parts of the country, and on Wednesday night, Prime Minister Johnson would not rule out enforcing a curfew on Londoners, putting the city into lockdown.

 

The government is preparing to pass emergency legislation on coronavirus which includes increasing police powers to detain those suspected of having the virus who refuse testing or isolation, as well as the power to shut down venues for public safety.

 

Recent reports have suggested that London could go into lockdown by this weekend. One source close to London Mayor Sadiq Khan told The Telegraph in a report published on Wednesday: β€œWe expect a shutdown of London, but nobody in central Government is saying when that will be or what form it will take.”

 

Mr Johnson is set to chair another meeting of the national emergency COBRA meeting on Thursday to discuss proposals amidst concerns that people in London are not following the government’s advice, reports The Times. Such measures could include forcing pubs, cafes, and restaurants to close.

 

β€œThis is not about arresting people on the street,” a government source told the newspaper of record. β€œThis is about some simple measures to ensure that the current public health guidance is followed.”

 

On Thursday morning, however, a government spokesman told media that there is β€œzero prospect” of restrictions being put on travel in and out of London.

 

β€œThere are no plans to close down the transport network in London and there is zero prospect of any restrictions being placed on travelling in and out of London,” the spokesman said.

Levitt noted that coronavirus tests in South Korea β€œare 10 times more sensitive than in Italy.”

Coronavirus will teach us that a country without free national health care is severely handicapped. Millions of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. They cannot afford health care premiums, deductions, and copays. Millions have no insurance. This means millions of people infected with coronavirus who cannot get medical help. The morbidity from this is intolerable in any society.

 

Shutdowns associated with efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus will deny income to millions of Americans who live paycheck to paycheck. What do they do for food, shelter, transportation? You don’t have to think very long along these lines to see a very frightening scenario.

 

Globalism has taken down the ladders of upward mobility by exporting American middle class jobs to Asia. A population once able to save now lives on debt, the service of which is interrupted by recession/depression and by debt service absorbing all net disposable income.

 

Globalism has also reduced the survivability of our society by making it dependent on externally produced goods, the supply of which can be cut off by disruptions in other societies, by policy disagreements leading to sanctions, and by an inability to export enough to pay for imports, which is what the offshored production of US firms is.

 

The United States has an unprotected population and an economy in trouble. For years corporate executives have run the companies for the benefit of their bonuses, which are largely dependent on rises in their company’s share price. Consequently, profits and borrowings have been invested in buying back the companies’ shares and not in new investment in the businesses. Corporate indebtedness is extreme and will threaten many corporations and many jobs in a downturn. Boeing is a case in point.

 

Economist Michael Hudson has for many decades studied the use of debt-forgiveness to restart economies killed by debt burdens. Debt forgiveness for corporations has a different implication than debt forgiveness for individuals. For corporations, forgiving debts lets those who financialized and indebted the economy and the population off the hook. To avoid rewarding them for the catastrophe they produced and to prevent widespread public outcry and distrust, nationalization is implied for insolvent companies and banks.

 

Nationalization would be limited to insolvent companies and financial institutions and doesn’t mean that there would be no private companies or businesses. Additional nationalization could be used to prevent strategic companies from substituting their interests for national interests, which they do when they move American jobs and factories offshore. Pharmaceuticals could be nationalized along with health care. Energy which often sacrifices the environment to its profits could be considered for nationalization. A successful society has to have more driving it than private profit.

I managed a chinese restaurant, they made me the best food all day, the meals they make themselves, great home cooking, absolutely wonderful.

We have lots of local places that do authentic too, not just americanized standards. "Real" chinese cuisine usually has more expensive ingredients, usually not deep fried. Americans in general have shitty taste.

We agreed to speak again-
