The mission, using a C-17 cargo plane, originated in Aviano, Italy, and landed in Memphis, Tenn., early Tuesday morning. But Defense Secretary Mark Esper said in a press conference, "We want to be the last resort" when it comes to fighting the pandemic. What the military can do, is ship badly-needed supplies to "hot zones" where COVID-19 has broken out. Defense One: The Defense Department will immediately release 1 million N95 respirator masks to the Department of Health & Human Services, or HHS, and may eventually provide eventually up to 5 million, Esper said at the Pentagon on Tuesday. The department is also ready to provide some 2,000 room ventilators and is considering activating National Guard and Reserve units to help with the nationwide response. Exactly what those units would be called to do, however, remains unclear. The secretary urged state and local officials to seek their own solutions first. β€œIn some ways, we want to be the last resort,” Esper said. Those supplies will be released by DHS and HHS on an as-needed basis.

 

There's a reason the swabs were flown to Memphis. Gen. Dave Goldfein, the Air Force chief of staff, confirmed that military cargo planes were moving coronavirus testing kits, but did not give specific details during a Wednesday briefing at the Pentagon. The general acknowledged that β€œwe’ve just made a pretty significant movement into Memphis.” The mission was flown by a C-17 cargo plane using the call β€œReach 911,” which landed early Tuesday morning at Memphis International Airport, a major FedEx hub. Shipping the kits to Memphis allows them to be quickly transferred to commercial aircraft and distributed around the country, according to people familiar with the mission. Esper was echoing the president when he said there wasn't that much the military could do during the crisis. But whatever can be done, they will do.

BACKGROUND

No therapeutics have yet been proven effective for the treatment of severe illness caused by SARS-CoV-2.

 

METHODS

We conducted a randomized, controlled, open-label trial involving hospitalized adult patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, which causes the respiratory illness Covid-19, and an oxygen saturation (Sao2) of 94% or less while they were breathing ambient air or a ratio of the partial pressure of oxygen (Pao2) to the fraction of inspired oxygen (Fio2) of less than 300 mm Hg. Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive either lopinavir–ritonavir (400 mg and 100 mg, respectively) twice a day for 14 days, in addition to standard care, or standard care alone. The primary end point was the time to clinical improvement, defined as the time from randomization to either an improvement of two points on a seven-category ordinal scale or discharge from the hospital, whichever came first.

 

RESULTS

A total of 199 patients with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection underwent randomization; 99 were assigned to the lopinavir–ritonavir group, and 100 to the standard-care group. Treatment with lopinavir–ritonavir was not associated with a difference from standard care in the time to clinical improvement (hazard ratio for clinical improvement, 1.24; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.90 to 1.72). Mortality at 28 days was similar in the lopinavir–ritonavir group and the standard-care group (19.2% vs. 25.0%; difference, βˆ’5.8 percentage points; 95% CI, βˆ’17.3 to 5.7). The percentages of patients with detectable viral RNA at various time points were similar. FBI Shuts Online Public Records Operation Over Coronavirus, Encourages Standard Mail

 

As mandatory social distancing forces Americans and federal government employees to telework, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is using coronavirus as an excuse to shut down its electronic public records operations. Instead, the agency that dropped the ball on 9/11 and more than 20 terrorist attacks in the U.S. since then, is encouraging the public to send requests via standard mail. Even for a famously inefficient government with a talent for keeping the public in the dark, this is a bit much. Furthermore, it is a scary display of attitude and conduct by the same bloated entity that is supposed to save us all from the new pandemic.

 

The bizarre move comes amid a nationwide mandate to avoid the outside world and a maximum telework order for federal government employees. Shutting its online Freedom of Information/Privacy Act (FOIPA) operation and accepting only standard mail makes no sense unless the law enforcement agency is simply trying to stop the flow of public records requests. That would be unethical, to say the least. FOIPA is a valuable tool used by Judicial Watch to expose government corruption and it is essential that there be no disruption in the system. Who will receive the mail with the new requests? When will the FOIPA requests get processed if employees are under a mandatory telework order? Judicial Watch reached out to the FBI, but never received a response. Apparently, everyone is home teleworking which means the requests could easily be accessed if the FBI didn’t shut down its electronic system.

 

Here is the absurd message that greets those wishing to obtain records from the FBI during the viral crisis: β€œDue to the emerging COVID-19 situation, the FBI is not accepting electronic Freedom of Information/Privacy Act requests or sending out electronic responses through the eFOIPA portal at this time. You may still submit a FOIPA request via standard mail. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.” The print is in red, indicating a sense of urgency, and appears above the original eFOIPA submission portal, which was designed to facilitate the process by allowing requesters to submit and receive responses electronically. β€œThe eFOIPA portal’s normal operating hours are 24 hours a day seven days a week,” according to the FBI website, which offers simple directions on how to proceed with public records requests. β€œThe FBI would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation and looks forward to receiving and responding to your request,” the agency writes. β€œIf you have any additional questions or experience any issues while using the eFOIPA system, please e-mail FOIPAQuestions@fbi.gov for assistance. Undercover detectives and partnering agencies conducted a seven-day undercover operation from March 10th through March 16th, 2020, during which detectives posed as girls and boys onlineβ€”on social media platforms and on-line dating sitesβ€”to investigate those who prey upon and travel to meet children for unlawful sexual activity. Detectives from the Desoto, Hillsborough, Lake, and Osceola Sheriff’s Offices, and the Tampa and Altamonte Springs Police Departments, also participated in the operation.

 

The suspects communicated with and solicited who they thought were children between the ages of 12 and 14 for sex acts. Most of them showed up to an undercover location in Polk County at separate times to meet who they thought were children, to sexually batter them. Some of them transmitted pornographic images and solicited the children online, and were arrested for that.

 

In all, detectives arrested 16 suspects, including a registered sexual predator; a Navy veteran who works for Disney Vacation Club; an assistant youth soccer coach; a grandfather with 9 grandchildren; and two full-time college students. The oldest suspect is 59 and the youngest is 21.

 

The 16 arrested suspects face a total of 42 felony charges which include: traveling to meet a minor for sex, attempted lewd battery, use of a computer to seduce a child, transmission of material harmful to a child, and violation of probation.

Two Australian scientists believe they have found the cure for coronavirus

 

The two drugs are Chloroquine, an anti-malarial drug, and HIV-suppressing combination lopinavir/ritonavir.

 

The scientists caution that it’s early in the findings.

 

The coronavirus has infected more than 189,000 people around the world with more than 7,500 dying.

 

One of the researchers is Professor David Paterson, who hopes to enroll more people in larger pharmaceutical trials by the end of the month.

 

'It’s a potentially effective treatment," he said. β€œPatients would end up with no viable coronavirus in their system at all after the end of the therapy.”
