FARMINGTON — Farmington has rea the 70th anniversary of one of the more sensational events in its history this week, but it's a safe bet to say few residents will pay much attention to that milestone – or even be aware of it.

From March 16 to March 18 in 1950, the city experienced a mass UFO sighting, with some reports indicating "hundreds" of residents saw strange objects in the sky in broad daylight over the three-day period.

Their accounts were reported in breathless fashion not just in this publication — "HUGE 'SAUCER' ARMADA JOLTS FARMINGTON" screamed the banner headline on page 1 of The Daily Times on March 18, 1950 – but in many others as well. Those include The Santa Fe New Mexican ("Farmington 'Invaded' by Saucer Squadron") and the Las Vegas (New Mexico) Daily Optic ("'Space Ships' Cause Sensation").

An account of the incident by The Associated Press was picked up by newspapers across the country.

It's a fantastic story, one that might have seemed destined to leave an indelible impression on UFO history and the sizable community of amateur sleuths and researchers who have made it their duty to investigate and publicize such incidents.

And, yet, the Farmington UFO incident of 1950 largely has been lost to history, especially when it is compared to its in-state counterpart, the famed, alleged crash of an alien spacecraft on a ranch northwest of Roswell in June 1947.

While that incident — sketchy as its details may be — is widely regarded as the most famous UFO-related event in history, having achieved legendary status over the years, the Farmington event that took place a few years later barely registers on anyone's radar.

With seven decades having passed, that remains true, even though Farmington's brush with UFO fame, or infamy, holds up to scrutiny far better than most other incidents, many of them much better known. That's the assessment of an Albuquerque man who studies such phenomena, but who acknowledges the need to take a skeptical approach to most UFO reports.

Ireland: Antifa collaborators in student governments and youth movements exposed

Conservative student journalists in Ireland are publishing the results of a long-term undercover operation they conducted, which has revealed that there are many Antifa collaborators who currently hold positions in student governments and youth movements across the country.

The journalists, who write for The Burkean, refer to their work as the “Irish Antifa Project,” and describe it as “an undercover investigation into the tacit and sometimes overt support for antifascist harassment among elements of the Irish media and political class.” They are publishing their findings in a series of articles on The Burkean website.

The Irish Antifa Project created a Twitter account for a fake group called “Irish Students Against Fascism” and spent months holding and recording conversations with prominent officials in various student and youth groups to get them to admit to their sympathies and cooperation with Antifa. Posing as Antifa themselves, they typically offered to carry out illegal acts against people on the Right on their target’s behalf while protecting his or her anonymity.

Most notable among those who have been exposed so far has been Michelle Byrne, who was Deputy President of the Union of Students in Ireland (USI), a nationwide organization which represents all of the country’s nearly 400,000 students. The Burkean journalists recorded Byrne agreeing to turn over the names of known conservative students. The journalists had told Byrne that they would use the names to “slap them around.” They also told her that they could carry out illegal actions against Right-wingers on her behalf to keep her name clean, to which she replied, “Yeah, absolutely.”

Byrne also made it clear that she was willing to do anything she could to help the fictitious group, so long as her connection was kept secret. After The Burkean’s findings were published, she resigned from her position.

Similarly, Lorna Fitzpatrick, USI’s President, told the group that she would lobby the USI to support their activities, and expressed support for the group’s proposed tactic of using the names of known Right-wingers in order to get them dismissed from their jobs, even offering to pass names to them.

Many others were netted in The Burkean’s sting operation as well, including Robert Murtagh, President of the Union of Students in Northern Ireland; Roisin Nic Lochlainn, Vice President of the NUI Galway student union; Laura Beston, President of the Trinity College Dublin student union; Sé Ó hEidhin, Trinity College student union’s Ethnic Minority Officer; Tate Donnelly, a candidate for the Green Party; Sean-Diarmuid Kelliher of the progressive youth movement Ógra Fianna Fáil; and Jacob Woolf, the acting head of Trinity College’s Jewish Society. All expressed support for the group’s intentions and in some cases promised or actually provided aid on a personal level to assist with the harassment of conservatives.

Woolf, in fact, turned over the names, photographs, and employment details of several of The Burkean’s writers. He made it clear that he wanted to target “classical liberals,” claiming that the term is merely a front for people who are in fact fascists.

The Burkean is still in the process of publishing its findings, so more revelations can be expected in the coming days. Full details of the intelligence they gathered is available on their website.

For the first time since the week ending February 29, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released its Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report, which shows that the death toll from the seasonal flu has reached 22,000, including 144 children.

The CDC website notes the tardiness of the report.

“The COVID-19 outbreak unfolding in the United States may affect healthcare seeking behavior which in turn would impact data from ILINet (Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance Network),” the website stated.

The website provided updated information:

Flu activity as reported by clinical laboratories remains high but decreased for the fourth week in a row; however, influenza-like illness activity increased slightly. Severity indicators remain moderate to low overall, but hospitalization rates differ by age group, with high rates among children and young adults.

Nationally, influenza A(H1N1)psm09 viruses are now the most commonly reported influenza viruses this season. Previously, influenza B/Victoria viruses predominated nationally.

But this flu season has broken at least one record.

Laboratory-confirmed influenza-associated hospitalization rates for the overall U.S. population remain moderate compared to recent seasons, but rates for children 0-4 years and adults 18-49 years are now the highest CDC has on record for these age groups, surpassing rates reported during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic.

Hospitalization rates for school-aged children (5-17 years) are higher than any recent regular season but remain lower than rates experienced by this age group during the pandemic.

The report also noted at least 36 million flu illnesses in the United States and 370,000 hospitalizations.

Over a Dozen Child Predators Nabbed In Undercover Sting In Florida

Undercover detectives and partnering agencies conducted a seven-day undercover operation from March 10th through March 16th, 2020, during which detectives posed as girls and boys online—on social media platforms and on-line dating sites—to investigate those who prey upon and travel to meet children for unlawful sexual activity. Detectives from the Desoto, Hillsborough, Lake, and Osceola Sheriff’s Offices, and the Tampa and Altamonte Springs Police Departments, also participated in the operation.

The suspects communicated with and solicited who they thought were children between the ages of 12 and 14 for sex acts. Most of them showed up to an undercover location in Polk County at separate times to meet who they thought were children, to sexually batter them. Some of them transmitted pornographic images and solicited the children online, and were arrested for that.

In all, detectives arrested 16 suspects, including a registered sexual predator; a Navy veteran who works for Disney Vacation Club; an assistant youth soccer coach; a grandfather with 9 grandchildren; and two full-time college students. The oldest suspect is 59 and the youngest is 21.

The 16 arrested suspects face a total of 42 felony charges which include: traveling to meet a minor for sex, attempted lewd battery, use of a computer to seduce a child, transmission of material harmful to a child, and violation of probation.

I don't see a typewriter fascination.

I see old Smith-Corona PORTABLE mechanical typewriters. These things are a complete bitch to type on unless you do it VERY regularly. There's a key sink of over a 1/2", the impact on the key is responsible for the boldness of the printed letter etc. Look at Madonna's example, it's awful. She can't use that device to format a letter. Then there's typos. Computers have made accuracy a low priority. Those old mechanicals it was a HIGH priority. You can't slop a half pound of white out on a page.

Also, if using a typewriter to type messages was important, you'd go with an IBM Selectric. Light key strike, consistant impact on paper, consistent text alignment, erase tape for errors, etc.

So the device is what's important.
