Coronavirus: Greatest test since World War Two, says

UN chief

"The current coronavirus outbreak is the biggest challenge for the world since World War Two, UN Secretary General António Guterres has warned.

He said it could bring a recession "that probably has no parallel in the recent past".

His warning comes amid dire predictions about the possible economic impact of measures imposed to fight the virus.

The number of confirmed cases around the world is now nearing 860,000, with more than 42,000 deaths.

The death toll in the US is now more than 4,000 - higher than the declared number of fatalities in China, where the outbreak began late last year.

Johns Hopkins University said 865 people had died in the past 24 hours in the US and in all more than 189,000 people in the country had been infected.

Meanwhile, Spain, second only to Italy in the number of recorded fatalities, has seen 849 deaths in the last 24 hours - the highest number it has had in a single day.

In the UK, a total of 1,789 people have died - a rise of 381, officials say. Among the victims was a 13-year-old boy, King's College Hospital Trust in London said."

Covid-19 deaths in Europe spike past 30,000 – AFP tally

1 Apr, 2020 07:21 / Updated 19 minutes ago

"Europe has lost over 30,000 lives to the coronavirus pandemic, AFP has reported. Italy accounts for more than a third of the grim number.

Just four days ago, the 30,000 benchmark was reached by the entire world, which shows how quickly the deaths are mounting and how hard European nations are suffering from the disease.

Apart from Italy, the highest numbers of deaths in Europe have been reported by Spain, France, the UK, and the Netherlands.

Global Covid-19 death toll hits 40,000 as countries continue to struggle with outbreak

The global coronavirus death toll topped 40,000 on Tuesday, with the US, China, and Iran affected worst among non-European nations.

The virus poses a greater threat to people with preexisting conditions and older patients, which is an apparent factor in why Europe’s comparatively older population is suffering more than people in younger parts of the world. However, many middle-aged and younger people have developed serious symptoms, too."

Europe & Iran Complete First INSTEX Transaction

Dodging US Sanctions

Wed, 04/01/2020 - 04:15

"The very first transaction of the INSTEX special purpose 'alternative' vehicle between Europe and Iran has been successfully completed, according Germany's Foreign Ministry Tuesday. "France, Germany and the United Kingdom confirm that INSTEX has successfully concluded its first transaction, facilitating the export of medical goods from Europe to Iran. These goods are now in Iran," the ministry said in a statement.

It was created over a year ago by European signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal in order to bypass Trump administration Iran-related sanctions, after the Belgium-based SWIFT financial messaging service suspended access for Iranian banks in Nov. 2018 under pressure from Washington.

France, Germany, and the United Kingdom confirmed the first transaction with Iran involving the export of medical goods, at a crucial moment the coronavirus is ravaging the population, and vowed it was the first of many to come.

"Now the first transaction is complete, INSTEX and its Iranian counterpart STFI will work on more transactions and enhancing the mechanism," the statement said on behalf of the three nuclear deal signatories.

Though Tehran has long criticized the Europeans for bowing to Trump's sanctions and not doing enough to keep up their end of the JCPOA, the 'SWIFT-alternative' of INSTEX is designed to save the nuclear deal by at least partially ensuring trade transactions with Europe continues, also with the assurance that no money directly changes hands.

The mechanism also seeks to woo European companies back into doing business with Iran, and to provide a legal and 'humanitarian' means of bypassing US sanctions without fear of penalties.

https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/europe-iran-complete-first-instex-transaction-successfully-dodging-us-sanctions

How INSTEX is designed to work, via Global Trade Law Blog: "The program sets up a trade finance system between Europe and Iran. EU exporters send goods to Iran, submit invoices to INSTEX, and receive payment from the INSTEX entity in Europe. Likewise, Iranian exporters send goods to Europe, submit invoices to the INSTEX-related entity in Iran, and receive payments in Iranian Rials. No U.S. dollars are involved, nor is the SWIFT system (both of which could subject the transactions to U.S. sanctions)."

The timing is sure to not be missed by the Trump administration, given that even amid the global coronavirus pandemic, which has been particularly fierce in Iran - taking over 2,800 lives among 44,600 confirmed cases - the US has kept up its "maximum pressure" campaign, despite critics saying the sanctions are ensuring the further spread of the virus through hitting Iran's already weakened medical sector hard."

‘We consider them family’: US military furloughs thousands

of South Korean employees in blow to alliance

April 01 2020

"CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea — Following months of warnings, the U.S. military put 4,500 South Korean base employees — about half its local workforce — on unpaid leave indefinitely Wednesday after the allies failed to agree on a new defense cost-sharing deal.

The furlough — the first of its kind — was a blow to the alliance and joint military readiness to fight on the divided peninsula, which commanders say already has been jeopardized by restrictions on movement aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus.

Negotiators have been deadlocked over the United States’ demand that South Korea sharply increase its contribution to offset the costs of stationing some 28,500 service members on the divided peninsula as defense against the nuclear-armed North.

U.S. Forces Korea commander Gen. Robert Abrams expressed regret and promised to continue to press both governments to reach a new Special Measures Agreement as soon as possible since the previous deal expired at the end of the year.

“The partial furlough of (South Korean) employees is not what we envisioned or hoped what would happen,” he said in a videotaped message. “The furlough is in no way a reflection of their performance, dedication or conduct, but rather due to a lack of a burden-sharing agreement making programmed funds unavailable.”

“These are our employees, our co-workers, our teammates, and we consider them family,” he added. “And while this is an unfortunate situation, and we will miss them dearly, we will work to minimize the impact on our ‘fight tonight’ posture despite the strenuous circumstances.”

South Korean officials blamed the American side, saying they had offered compromises including a way to isolate the labor issue while continuing to negotiate on other items."

Coronavirus deaths top 4,000 in US, surpass China

Published 1 hour ago

"The number of coronavirus related deaths topped 4,000 in the U.S. on Tuesday night, just one day after reaching the 3,000 mark.

The U.S. has now surpassed China by over 700 COVID-19 fatalities – as the White House coronavirus task force said it projects 100,000 to 240,000 deaths from the virus and millions infected in the country.

Without any measures in place to mitigate the contagion's spread, those projections jump to between 1.5 million and 2.2 million deaths from COVID-19.

WHITE HOUSE PROJECTS 100K TO 240K CORONAVIRUS DEATHS AS TRUMP TELLS US TO PREPARE FOR 'VERY PAINFUL TWO WEEKS'"

“This is going to be a rough two week period,” President Trump said in a press conference on Tuesday. “As a nation we’re going to have a really rough two weeks. Our strength will be tested and our endurance will be tried.”

China – where the outbreak started – has reported 3,310 virus-related deaths, while over 4,070 have been killed in the U.S.

Deaths surged by roughly 700 on Tuesday as infections are nearing 190,000 in the U.S. Wyoming is the only state in the country without a fatality from the virus after Hawaii announced a senior citizen with multiple medical issues had died from the pandemic, according to Hawaii News Now.

New York – the epicenter for the virus outbreak in the U.S. – has over 76,000 infections and more than 1,700 fatalities as of early Wednesday. Over 43,000 of the state's infections and more than half of its deaths have occurred in New York City.

In the U.S., 11 states have over 4,000 coronavirus infections – as Michigan, Illinois, Louisiana and Massachusetts have started to become emerging hotspots for the virus. Michigan now has 7,615 cases after 1,117 infections and 75 deaths were recorded in a single day. Over 259 people in the state have died from the virus.

Illinois – which has seen nearly 6,000 infections – sent out an emergency alert to residents in the state on Tuesday requesting the need for additional licensed healthcare workers.

"In the COVID-19 event, Illinois is looking for medically trained individuals to join the fight," according to the website where health professionals are directed to sign up. "Individuals that register here may be potentially contacted to work in a hospital surge or alternative housing setting."

European markets sink as US coronavirus death toll rises

1 Apr, 2020 07:15 / Updated 19 minutes ago

"European stock markets are falling at the start of trading on Wednesday, beginning the new quarter with fresh losses, as the death toll in the United States from Covid-19 continues to climb.

Germany’s DAX plunged by over three percent during early trading, while British and French stock markets have dropped by over four percent. Spain’s IBEX and Italy’s FTSE MIB are both down over two percent.

The losses are led by shares in Britain’s banks which dropped heavily at the start of trading after they froze last year’s dividends and vowed not to pay any for this year. HSBC has plunged eight percent, followed by Lloyds and Standard Chartered which have both fallen almost six percent.

The markets are reacting to dire warnings from US President Donald Trump of a “very, very painful two weeks” ahead. He said Americans should be prepared for a surge in coronavirus infections and deaths.

“This could be a hell of a bad two weeks. This is going to be a very bad two, and maybe three weeks. This is going to be three weeks like we’ve never seen before,” Trump said on Tuesday.

White House officials are projecting between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths in the country, with coronavirus fatalities peaking over the next two weeks.

Investors are now focused on the eurozone unemployment data for February and final eurozone manufacturing PMI data that are due to be published, showing how badly factories have suffered from the Covid-19 shutdown in March.

European stock markets have posted their worst quarter in nearly two decades as the Covid-19 pandemic has forced nationwide shutdowns across the continent.

By Tuesday’s close, the pan-European Stoxx 600 index had fallen by 23 percent since the start of the year. This marked its worst first quarter result ever, but narrowly beating the 23.33 percent loss posted in the third quarter of 2002."

March 31, 2020 Updated: April 1, 2020

"The Australian government on Sunday enacted new laws banning price gouging as well as the export of personal protective equipment (PPE) and disinfectant products as supplies in hospitals, aged-care centers, and other centers across the country are running dry amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has moved to ban the exports of disposable face masks, gloves, and gowns, as well as eye visors, and disinfectant products including alcohol wipes and hand sanitizer.

While you’re terrified of Covid-19, some climate alarmists are overjoyed because, for them, fear is… an OPPORTUNITY

1 Apr, 2020 08:34

"Many hardline environmentalists are overjoyed at the atmosphere of fear that Covid-19 has created; for them, it is an instrument for realising the dream of a society that runs according to climate alarmists’ dogma.

“Some believe the pandemic is a once-in-a-generation chance to remake society and build a better future,” argues one advocate of climate alarmism.

So, in case you thought that Covid-19 is a global pandemic of catastrophic proportions, think again!

In the West, hardline environmentalists are working overtime to portray Covid-19 as payback for all the miseries that humans have inflicted on the planet. They claim that global warming, species extinction, the emergence of superbugs and the eating of meat are somehow directly or indirectly linked to the outbreak of the current pandemic. They regard the fears and anxiety generated by the current public health emergency as an opportunity to promote the message that, unless we accept their dogma, humanity will become extinct."

Some of them are positively overjoyed at the opportunity created by the climate of fear that’s all-pervasive across the world. “We’ve been trying for years to get people out of normal mode and into emergency mode,” enthused Margaret Klein Salamon, who heads the advocacy group The Climate Mobilization. She added that “what is possible politically is fundamentally different when lots of people get into emergency mode – when they fundamentally accept that there’s danger, and that if we want to be safe we need to do everything we can.”

Keeping people in a state of fear of what they euphemistically describe as ‘emergency mode’ is the objective of Klein Salamon. As she stated, “now the challenge is to keep emergency mode activated about climate.”

That’s another way of saying that perpetuating –indeed, institutionalising– a climate of fear is the main objective of this movement. From this perspective Covid-19 is not so much a tragic public health issue but an instrument for realising the dream of a society that runs according to the environmentalist dogma of misanthropic miserabilism.

What green fear entrepreneurs really hate is the spirit of human ambition, that refuses to defer to the dictates of nature. This is a spirit that is open to taking risks in order to transform the world through the use of science and technology. From the time when humans stepped out of their caves to taking the risk of travelling to space, there were always those who decided to do what was necessary to conquer their fears. The refusal not to give in to fears is always the first step towards looking for solutions that will allow us to assume greater control over our lives.

It is precisely this aspiration to take control and harness the power of nature and science that climate alarmists despise. They despise it so much that they have coined the term ‘human impact’ to suggest that what people have done to the planet is by definition wholly destructive. They hate humans’ impact on the world so much that many of them want to dramatically decrease the number of babies that are born. "

QAnon’s conspiracy theories have seeped into U.S. politics

but most don’t know what it is

MARCH 30, 2020

"While much attention has been paid to online platforms that have become vehicles for misinformation and campaigns to sow division, the collection of connected conspiracy theories known as QAnon represents a different phenomenon. QAnon originated on internet chat boards, and its message has spread into the offline world, where its adherents surface at political and other rallies or are moved to actions that result in real-life incidents. Most Americans say they've heard nothing at all about QAnon

The conspiracy theories center around the idea of a “deep state” in which anti-American elements in the government, industry, media and other institutions are involved in activities including bringing down President Donald Trump. Also featured are allegations that prominent political figures and others participated in a global pedophile ring.

But despite QAnon’s spread, about three-quarters of U.S. adults (76%) say they have heard or read nothing at all about it, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in February and March. Around a quarter (23%) say they have heard or read a lot or a little, with 3% saying they’ve heard or read a lot. The data was gathered as part of the Center’s Election News Pathways project."

scrape a little bit of it for us please, like this:

"Summary

An outbreak of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) that began in Wuhan, China, has spread rapidly, with cases now confirmed in multiple countries. We report the first case of 2019-nCoV infection confirmed in the United States and describe the identification, diagnosis, clinical course, and management of the case, including the patient’s initial mild symptoms at presentation with progression to pneumonia on day 9 of illness. This case highlights the importance of close coordination between clinicians and public health authorities at the local, state, and federal levels, as well as the need for rapid dissemination of clinical information related to the care of patients with this emerging infection.

On December 31, 2019, China reported a cluster of cases of pneumonia in people associated with the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, Hubei Province.1 On January 7, 2020, Chinese health authorities confirmed that this cluster was associated with a novel coronavirus, 2019-nCoV.2 Although cases were originally reported to be associated with exposure to the seafood market in Wuhan, current epidemiologic data indicate that person-to-person transmission of 2019-nCoV is occurring.3-6 As of January 30, 2020, a total of 9976 cases had been reported in at least 21 countries,7 including the first confirmed case of 2019-nCoV infection in the United States, reported on January 20, 2020. Investigations are under way worldwide to better understand transmission dynamics and the spectrum of clinical illness. This report describes the epidemiologic and clinical features of the first case of 2019-nCoV infection confirmed in the United States.

Case Report

On January 19, 2020, a 35-year-old man presented to an urgent care clinic in Snohomish County, Washington, with a 4-day history of cough and subjective fever. On checking into the clinic, the patient put on a mask in the waiting room. After waiting approximately 20 minutes, he was taken into an examination room and underwent evaluation by a provider. He disclosed that he had returned to Washington State on January 15 after traveling to visit family in Wuhan, China. The patient stated that he had seen a health alert from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about the novel coronavirus outbreak in China and, because of his symptoms and recent travel, decided to see a health care provider.

Figure 1.

Posteroanterior and Lateral Chest Radiographs, January 19, 2020 (Illness Day 4).

Apart from a history of hypertriglyceridemia, the patient was an otherwise healthy nonsmoker. The physical examination revealed a body temperature of 37.2°C, blood pressure of 134/87 mm Hg, pulse of 110 beats per minute, respiratory rate of 16 breaths per minute, and oxygen saturation of 96% while the patient was breathing ambient air. Lung auscultation revealed rhonchi, and chest radiography was performed, which was reported as showing no abnormalities (Figure 1). A rapid nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) for influenza A and B was negative. A nasopharyngeal swab specimen was obtained and sent for detection of viral respiratory pathogens by NAAT; this was reported back within 48 hours as negative for all pathogens tested, including influenza A and B, parainfluenza, respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus, adenovirus, and four common coronavirus strains known to cause illness in humans (HKU1, NL63, 229E, and OC43)."

Tokyo stocks sink deeper in first fiscal 2020 session

JIJI

APR 1, 2020

"The raging coronavirus pushed Tokyo stocks far lower in their first fiscal 2020 trading Wednesday, with the benchmark Nikkei average surrendering over 1,000 points at one point.

The Nikkei average of 225 selected issues listed on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange closed at 18,065.41, down 851.60 points, or 4.50 percent, extending its losing streak to a third market day. On Tuesday, it lost 167.96 points.

The TOPIX index of all first-section issues dived 51.96 points, or 3.70 percent, to end at 1,351.08, after dropping 32.50 points the previous day.

The Tokyo market went south from the outset, in the wake of Wall Street’s downturn Tuesday amid rekindled concerns over an economic slump caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Bank of Japan’s tankan quarterly survey for March, released just before the opening bell, also drove investors to sell as the closely watched report showed the first negative business sentiment index reading for large manufacturers in seven years, brokers said.

With coronavirus outbreaks in Japan and the United States, in particular, showing no signs of slowing down, stocks plunged deeper in the afternoon. Also weighed down by U.S. Dow Jones futures’ drop in off-hours trading and the yen’s rise against the dollar, the Nikkei nose-dived 1,045.39 points toward the closing.

“Uncertain about the timing of a lockdown of Tokyo, medium- to long-term investors took to the sidelines for most of the day’s session,” said Yutaka Miura, senior technical analyst at Mizuho Securities Co.

On the first section, falling issues far outnumbered rising ones 2,056 to 100 while 10 issues were unchanged. Volume fell to 1.66 billion shares from Tuesday’s 1.86 billion shares.

Technologies and automakers were hit hard by the stronger yen, with industrial robot producer Fanuc tumbling 6.58 percent and carmaker Honda 5.49 percent.

ANA plunged 8.30 percent on media reports that the airline will put 6,400 flight attendants on temporary leave.

Nippon Sheet Glass plummeted 7.51 percent, after the glass maker announced that it will skip dividend payments for fiscal 2019.

Among other noticeable losers were drug maker Eisai and seafood company Nippon Suisan Kaisha.

On the other hand, V-Cube, which makes video conferencing software, surged 20.91 percent, rising for the eighth consecutive session, amid growing investor appetite for telework-related stocks

In index futures trading on the Osaka Exchange, the key June contract on the Nikkei average tumbled 890 points to end at 17,820."

DOJ audit prompted by FBI spying on Americans finds

errors in EVERY sample FISA application

31 Mar, 2020 21:55 / Updated 11 hours ago

"A review of 29 FBI applications to spy on US citizens or residents found mistakes in every single one, and four cases of proper documentation missing entirely, the Justice Department inspector general has revealed.

From a dataset of more than 700 applications under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) submitted by eight FBI field offices, Inspector General Michael Horowitz and his team selected a sample of 29, made between October 2014 and September 2019, pertaining to US citizens or “green card” holders.

They found an average of 20 errors in each one.

The Woods Procedures mandate “compiling supporting documentation for each fact in the FISA application,” Horowitz wrote in his findings, which were made public on Tuesday. Yet his auditors found at least some of that documentation contained erroneous or mistaken information in 25 of the applications – and was entirely missing in four other cases.

“We could not review original Woods Files for 4 of the 29 selected FISA applications because the FBI has not been able to locate them and, in 3 of these instances, did not know if they ever existed,” Horowitz wrote.

The auditors “do not have confidence” the FBI actually followed procedure in any of the cases, the report concluded.

Horowitz’s findings managed to attract a considerable amount of attention on Tuesday, even as the US continued to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. Attorney General Bill Barr was “appalled” at the way the FISA process was abused, resulting “in one of the greatest political travesties in American history,” DOJ spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said.

Barr was referring to FBI failure to follow Woods procedures in the four FISA warrants used to spy on the campaign of President Donald Trump – via adviser Carter Page – during and after the 2016 US presidential election. The wider audit followed Horowitz’s findings in December last year that the Page warrants contained at least 17 “significant errors or omissions.”

Two of those warrants have been ruled improperly obtained since, and the DOJ has moved to “quarantine” information obtained through all four from all pending investigations.

Even so, Barr and FBI Director Chris Wray insisted that FISA warrants remained a vital and “indispensable” tool to guard the US from national security threats, and urged lawmakers to extend those powers going forward.

Democrats, on the other hand, insisted that the actual takeaway from the audit was that the FBI was not evil, but merely incompetent.

“Further evidence that the problems with the Carter Page FISA applications had nothing to do with Trump, Carter Page, or political bias,” tweeted Michael Bromwich, DOJ IG under the Clinton administration.

Bromwich was also the lawyer for Dr. Christine Blasey-Ford during the attempt by Democrats to block the nomination of Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court. Her accusation that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her back in high school could ultimately not be substantiated.

Why Did Russia Just Halt Domestic Gold Purchases?

Wed, 04/01/2020 - 05:35

"As the gold market continues to deal with global liquidity issues, and virus-lockdown-related disruptions between paper and physical pricing as extremely high physical demand creates shortages, Russia made a surprise announcement on Monday.

Starting April 1, Russia will be suspending its domestic gold purchases:

"Since April 1, 2020, the Bank of Russia has suspended the purchase of gold in the domestic precious metals market.

Further decisions on the purchase of gold will be made depending on the development of the situation in the financial market…" Russia's central bank said.

In recent years, as Kitco notes, the Russian central bank has dominated the gold market, consistently increasing its gold reserves every month for the last three years. According to data from the World Gold Council, the Russian central bank bought 158.1 tons last year. The WGC data shows that the central bank bought 8.1 tons of gold in January.

Although Russia will not be adding to its gold reserves in the near future, analysts are not expecting the central bank to start selling its gold anytime soon."

Virus Droplets Could Travel 27 Feet, Social Distancing Rules Outdated: MIT Professor

April 1, 2020 Updated: April 1, 2020

"Droplets from the CCP virus could travel up to 27 feet, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researcher said in a paper published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) on March 26.

Lydia Bourouiba, Ph.D., an associate professor at MIT and expert in fluid dynamics, said that a sneeze or cough, for example, results in a turbulent gas cloud that could contain virus droplets, and warned that the current guidelines on social distancing, while critical in the current time of pandemic, are based on outdated models from the 1930s.

“Recent work has demonstrated that exhalations, sneezes, and coughs not only consist of mucosalivary droplets following short-range semiballistic emission trajectories but, importantly, are primarily made of a multiphase turbulent gas (a puff) cloud that entrains ambient air and traps and carries within it clusters of droplets with a continuum of droplet sizes,” she wrote.
