Coronavirus: Greatest test since World War Two, says

"The current coronavirus outbreak is the biggest challenge for the world since World War Two, UN Secretary General AntΓ³nio Guterres has warned.

 

He said it could bring a recession "that probably has no parallel in the recent past".

 

His warning comes amid dire predictions about the possible economic impact of measures imposed to fight the virus.

 

The number of confirmed cases around the world is now nearing 860,000, with more than 42,000 deaths.

 

The death toll in the US is now more than 4,000 - higher than the declared number of fatalities in China, where the outbreak began late last year.

 

Johns Hopkins University said 865 people had died in the past 24 hours in the US and in all more than 189,000 people in the country had been infected.

We used to call it 'personal space', that area surrounding another that one just naturally strives to avoid. That, 'stay out of my face' space we will rank as number one in this analysis of social distancing. What we stayed out of, that was the primitive concern, not so long ago.

"The very first transaction of the INSTEX special purpose 'alternative' vehicle between Europe and Iran has been successfully completed, according Germany's Foreign Ministry Tuesday. "France, Germany and the United Kingdom confirm that INSTEX has successfully concluded its first transaction, facilitating the export of medical goods from Europe to Iran. These goods are now in Iran," the ministry said in a statement.

 

It was created over a year ago by European signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal in order to bypass Trump administration Iran-related sanctions, after the Belgium-based SWIFT financial messaging service suspended access for Iranian banks in Nov. 2018 under pressure from Washington.

 

France, Germany, and the United Kingdom confirmed the first transaction with Iran involving the export of medical goods, at a crucial moment the coronavirus is ravaging the population, and vowed it was the first of many to come.

 

"Now the first transaction is complete, INSTEX and its Iranian counterpart STFI will work on more transactions and enhancing the mechanism," the statement said on behalf of the three nuclear deal signatories.

 

Though Tehran has long criticized the Europeans for bowing to Trump's sanctions and not doing enough to keep up their end of the JCPOA, the 'SWIFT-alternative' of INSTEX is designed to save the nuclear deal by at least partially ensuring trade transactions with Europe continues, also with the assurance that no money directly changes hands.

 

The mechanism also seeks to woo European companies back into doing business with Iran, and to provide a legal and 'humanitarian' means of bypassing US sanctions without fear of penalties.

Illinois – which has seen nearly 6,000 infections – sent out an emergency alert to residents in the state on Tuesday requesting the need for additional licensed healthcare workers.

 

"In the COVID-19 event, Illinois is looking for medically trained individuals to join the fight," according to the website where health professionals are directed to sign up. European markets sink as US coronavirus death toll rises

"European stock markets are falling at the start of trading on Wednesday, beginning the new quarter with fresh losses, as the death toll in the United States from Covid-19 continues to climb.

Been thinking about how many people not able to work is going to be able to pay bills. With forced shutdowns/layoffs and independent business people out of work and unable to pay bills, the economy as we know it is going to be drastically changed. A MAJOR reset if you will. "A review of 29 FBI applications to spy on US citizens or residents found mistakes in every single one, and four cases of proper documentation missing entirely, the Justice Department inspector general has revealed.

From a dataset of more than 700 applications under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) submitted by eight FBI field offices, Inspector General Michael Horowitz and his team selected a sample of 29, made between October 2014 and September 2019, pertaining to US citizens or β€œgreen card” holders.

 

They found an average of 20 errors in each one.

 

The Woods Procedures mandate β€œcompiling supporting documentation for each fact in the FISA application,” Horowitz wrote in his findings, which were made public on Tuesday. Yet his auditors found at least some of that documentation contained erroneous or mistaken information in 25 of the applications – and was entirely missing in four other cases.

 

β€œWe could not review original Woods Files for 4 of the 29 selected FISA applications because the FBI has not been able to locate them and, in 3 of these instances, did not know if they ever existed,” Horowitz wrote.

 

The auditors β€œdo not have confidence” the FBI actually followed procedure in any of the cases, the report concluded.

 

Horowitz’s findings managed to attract a considerable amount of attention on Tuesday, even as the US continued to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. Attorney General Bill Barr was β€œappalled” at the way the FISA process was abused, resulting β€œin one of the greatest political travesties in American history,” DOJ spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said.

 

Barr was referring to FBI failure to follow Woods procedures in the four FISA warrants used to spy on the campaign of President Donald Trump – via adviser Carter Page – during and after the 2016 US presidential election. The wider audit followed Horowitz’s findings in December last year that the Page warrants contained at least 17 β€œsignificant errors or omissions.”

 

Two of those warrants have been ruled improperly obtained since, and the DOJ has moved to β€œquarantine” information obtained through all four from all pending investigations.

 

Even so, Barr and FBI Director Chris Wray insisted that FISA warrants remained a vital and β€œindispensable” tool to guard the US from national security threats, and urged lawmakers to extend those powers going forward.

 

Democrats, on the other hand, insisted that the actual takeaway from the audit was that the FBI was not evil, but merely incompetent.

 

β€œFurther evidence that the problems with the Carter Page FISA applications had nothing to do with Trump, Carter Page, or political bias,” tweeted Michael Bromwich, DOJ IG under the Clinton administration.

The USNS Comfort sailed from Norfolk, Virginia to New York City, arriving on March 31, 2020.

President Trump gave a speech in Norfolk on to see the ship off on March 28, 2020. He could have flown to NYC and received the ship there but he chose to see it off. A commander in chief see ships off to war so this was peculiar.

The president gave his speech in front of the ship and 23 American flags. As the ship sailed into the Atlantic Ocean, it first sailed in a giant circle, partially overlapping its path before breaking out back on course. Many people saw this as sailing in the path of the letter Q.

President Trump has recently made a few photographic tributes to President Lincoln, including from within his press secretary’s office. He hasn’t done this for President Washington recently.

Right next to Norfolk along the coast is the City of Yorktown, which saw the last battle of the Revolutionary War. The British surrendered at Yorktown, ending the Revolutionary War against England.

The legislation, which aims to discourage Taiwan's diplomatic allies from cutting ties with the island country due to pressure from Beijing, passed unanimously in the House of Representatives on March 4 and in the Senate on March 11. Despite being preoccupied with the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, President Donald Trump on March 26 signed the bill into law.

 

The act requires the State Department to induce governments that are allies of Taiwan to maintain diplomatic ties with the country and to identify those at risk of severing relations with it. The act also calls for the U.S. to supplement its diplomatic presence in countries that support Taiwan and reduce its diplomatic footprint in those that side with Beijing.

 

In an editorial released on Wednesday, communist China's state-run mouthpiece, the People's Daily, expressed Beijing's "strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition" with the act, which it claimed "sabotages" the "one China principle" and "violates international law." The paper also claimed the U.S had "grossly interfered in China's domestic affairs" with the new act.

 

The Chinese propaganda outlet then described the TAIPEI act as an "evil act" that enables the U.S. to enhance or sever diplomatic ties with other countries based on their relationship with Taiwan, the very pressure tactic Beijing has employed extensively. The editorial alleges the law is a "hegemonic threat" that indulges in "wrongdoings" that challenge the "one China principle."
