a lot of the push for masks comes from Asian countries/people where folks have been in the habit of wearing face masks for many years now due to air pollution and street dust.
The Asian habit of wearing face masks has always been tied to the prevalence of two-wheeled scooters (50cc to 150cc things) as a form of personal transportation. There is no 'windshield' to keep the dust out of your nose/mouth so people got in the habit of wearing face masks long before the beervirus.
Due to two-wheeled traffic and air pollution, every pharmacy and convenience story in Asia already sold face masks. There was a huge stockpile of them even before the beervirus. In the USA, this was not the case. No stockpile, and more importantly no habit of wearing face masks.
POTUS knows that wearing a face mask is an Asian thing that would be shocking or fear-inspiring to American society. Of course, Antifa types would love to capitalize on this excuse to wear masks if POTUS gives in.
