Alpha Centauri and Beta Centauri are sometimes called the Southern Pointer Stars. They point to the Southern Cross. The Southern Cross is distinctive in its own right, but, if you're in the Southern Hemisphere and want to be sure you've found the Cross, these two stars can help you.

It's no coincidence that on top top of Epstein's temple were the two sulphur crested cockatoos. The ancient aboriginal myth told of how these two cockatoos flew into the sky to become the two pointer stars (including Alpha Centauri).

And no coincidence that Q asked "how far away is the closest star" (Drop 376) …which just happnes to be Alpha Centauri.

Does the yellow brick (golden) road lead to Oz (AU)?

What exactly is up downunder?

Only one of the two pointer stars became part of the Australian flag (second image). The largest star on the flag.

Alpha Centauri is the nearest star to earth at about 4.22 light years.

Wikipedia claims that the large star on the current Australian flag is NOT the pointer star Alpha Centauri. And yet, it's positioned where the pointer star would be. Just look at the original South Australia flag (first image), from 1870, which was very open about including Alpha (and Beta) Centauri on the flag.
