The CDC has started administering antibody tests to gauge true scale of coronavirus spread

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Saturday it has begun conducting antibody tests to determine the true number of people infected with the novel COVID-19 coronavirus, including those who never developed symptoms.

Unlike normal diagnostic tests, the antibody test can detect if a person has recovered from an earlier infection. If so, there's a chance they've built up some protection, which could help inform future responses to the virus and perhaps even allow some people to re-enter the workforce. However, it's not yet confirmed if antibodies ensure immunity, and there are still questions about the accuracy of such tests, especially those administered at home.

The CDC is planning three different studies related to the tests. One, which is already underway, will look at blood samples from people who were never diagnosed with COVID-19 but live in hot spots. The agency will also conduct a national survey using samples from different parts of the country. The hope is the survey will launch in the summer. The third study, for which there's no timetable yet, will consider special populations, like health care workers. Read more at Stat News.

Coronavirus Can be Stopped in 48 Hours Using a Simple Anti-Parasitic Drug: Monash University

Amid a barrage of research on finding treatment for new coronavirus, Australian scientists have found that a common anti-parasitic drug killed SARS-CoV-2 virus, growing in cell culture, within 48 hours in lab settings. Ivermectin is an FDA-approved anti-parasitic drug that has also been shown to be effective in vitro against a broad range of viruses including HIV, dengue, influenza and Zika virus.

Published in the journal Antiviral Research, the study from Monash University showed that a single dose of Ivermectin could stop the coronavirus growing in cell culture โ€“ effectively eradicating all genetic material of the virus within two days. "We found that even a single dose could essentially remove all viral RNA by 48 hours and that even at 24 hours there was a really significant reduction in it," said study lead author Dr Kylie Wagstaff.

Dr Wagstaff, however, cautioned that the tests conducted in the study were in vitro and that trials needed to be carried out in people. "Ivermectin is very widely used and seen as a safe drug. We need to figure out now whether the dosage you can use it at in humans will be effective - that's the next step," Wagstaff informed. In times when we're having a global pandemic and there isn't an approved treatment, "if we had a compound that was already available around the world then that might help people sooner".

Very safe medication.

Ivermectin was first developed in 1975 and came into medical use in 1981. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.

It is currently used as a treatment for strongyloidiasis, a parasitic disease caused by roundworms that affects an estimated 30 million to 100 million people worldwide. Ivermectin is effective in destoying the parasites in the intestine.

It is also to alleviate the symptoms of onchocerciasis, or river blindness, which can lead to severe itching, bumps under the skin, and blindness. In the case of river blindness, for which there is no vaccine, ivermectin is not a cure but has been proven to kill the larvae if not the adult worms. It is administered to patients once every six to 12 months.

Ivermectin is also used to treat head lice, scabies and other diseases caused by roundworms and whipworms globally. It is available on the market in drugs including Ivexterm, Ivergot, Dermoper IV, Detebencil, Evanix, Iver P and Ivertal and usually administered in pill form, although it is also manufactured as drops, creams and injectable solutions.
