Spain: Illegal migrants return illegally to Morocco
A group of approximately 100 Moroccan migrants who had been living in Europe returned illegally to Morocco from Spain by inflatable boat last week to escape the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The young migrants each paid 60,000 Moroccan dirhams (approximately 5,500 euros) to get back to Morocco, according to a report at the French portal Fdesouche, which was in turn based on an article by the Moroccan newspaper Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.
As they were crossing the Mediterranean, their boats were caught by large waves and they were trapped at sea for an entire day, according to the authorities in Larache, on the Moroccan coast. They were rescued by a smuggler from Kenitra who brought them to a beach near Douar Akla for 300,000 dirhams (approximately 27,000 euros).

COVID-19: China says it has sold nearly four billion masks abroad
China has exported 3.86 billion masks, 37.5 million pieces of protective clothing so far
Beijing: China has sold nearly four billion masks to foreign countries since March, officials said on Sunday, as they tried to stem widespread fears over the quality of medical exports.
Despite Chinese cases dwindling, Beijing has encouraged factories to increase production of medical supplies as the pandemic kills over 60,000 globally and parts of the world face a protective equipment shortage.
China has exported 3.86 billion masks, 37.5 million pieces of protective clothing, 16,000 ventilators and 2.84 million COVID-19 testing kits since March 1, customs official Jin Hai said, with orders to more than 50 countries.
She added the country's medical supply exports were valued at 10.2 billion yuan ($1.4 billion).
However numerous nations - including the Netherlands, the Philippines, Croatia, Turkey and Spain - have complained about substandard or faulty medical products shipped from China.

Perhaps the most under-reported statistic in the entire coronavirus pandemic passed an important milestone on Sunday as 250,000 were marked as having recovered from the illness.
The onward march of the death toll and number of confirmed cases has prompted countless hours of media coverage, as the virus spread around the globe. However, the number of people who are officially recorded as having recovered from the disease receives far less attention.
The important stat climbed past the quarter of a million barrier (to 252,478) on Sunday, as more than 20 percent of confirmed carriers of the virus have officially overcome the disease, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.

Italy has recorded the world's largest number of official COVID-19 fatalities
Rome: An Italian policeman who worked in Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte's security detail died Saturday after contracting the novel coronavirus, the country's police force said.
The Italian government said that, when officer Giorgio Guastamacchia tested positive on March 21, he had not been in contact with Conte for at least two weeks.
The Corriere della Sera reported at the time that Conte, 55, was tested as a precaution, turning up a negative result for the virus.
The head of the Italian police force expressed his condolences for Guastamacchia, who was 52.

KABUL (Sputnik) - An airstrike in the central Afghan province of Uruzgan left at least eight civilians killed and two others critically injured in the early hours of Sunday, a source in the regional government said, adding that it was unclear if the attack was carried out by the government forces or the US-led international troops.
"Eight civilians were killed and two others were critically injured in the attack," the source said.
They said the injured civilians had been taken to the Mirwais hospital in the southern city of Kandahar.
At the same time, the Uruzgan governor's spokesman, Zargai Abadi, denied there were civilian casualties in the attack. Speaking to local media, he said that the airstrike had been carried out by the Afghan government forces, adding that six militants were killed in the ambush.

The former head of Venezuela’s military intelligence unit, Hugo Carvajal, is discussing his surrender with US authorities, three people familiar with the matter said on Saturday, after prosecutors charged him this week with drug trafficking alongside Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Carvajal, a former general and ally of late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, has been in hiding since a Spanish court in November approved his extradition to the United States. It was unclear when he could formally surrender to US authorities and the people declined to say.

Council of Europe: Migrants must be released from detention
Dunja Mijatovic, the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights, is demanding that the national governments of the European Union release migrants from detention and back into the general population as a coronavirus (COVID-19) prevention measure.
Last week, Mijatovic said in a statement that EU member states should “release [migrants]to the maximum extent possible,” given that “immigration detention facilities generally provide poor opportunities for social distancing and other measures to protect against Covid-19 infection for migrants and staff.”
Mijatovic also noted that Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom had already released migrants as a result of the pandemic. She observed that holding migrants in detention facilities is only lawful under human rights treaties when it is certain that detainees will eventually be returned to their homelands. Since that’s no longer possible in many cases given the travel restrictions imposed in response to the pandemic, migrant detention is no longer defensible on legal grounds.

Venezuela mobilizes forces for potential confrontation with US: report
Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro tweeted on Saturday that he had “ordered the mobilisation of artillery [pieces]” in the country’s strategic areas in order to protect the security of ordinary Venezuelans.
“I denounce the existence of groups financed from Colombia and the US, which seek to undermine the stability of [our] homeland with violent actions”, he wrote on his Twitter page.
