Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report

Between 38 million and 54 million people have been stricken with the flu as of March 14, according to the latest CDC data.

By some indicators, this flu season is worse than last flu season. For example, the data shows the cumulative hospitalization rate for the flu so far this season is 65.1 per 100,000 people, compared with 48.8 per 100,000 at the same point last season.

According to CDC, this year's flu season has led to at least 17 million medical visits and 390,000 hospitalizations. CDC found that the percentage of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness increased to 5.8% in the week ending on March 14, up from 5.2% the previous week. The national baseline for those visits is 2.4%.

CDC in its latest report estimated that there had been at least 23,000 deaths related to the flu as of March 14.

Ohio Prosecutor To Stay-At-Home Violators: ‘You Can Sit There And Kill Yourself’ In Jail

A Cincinnati, Ohio prosecutor said violators of the state’s stay-at-home order will be arrested and can “sit there and kill” themselves in jail.

Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine issued the order last month, then last week extended it until May 1. The order bans all nonessential travel, gatherings of more than 10 people, and requires all visitors to the state to quarantine themselves for 14 days.

GPS Ankle Monitors Ordered for Kentucky Residents Refusing Quarantine as Crackdown Begins

As we’ve noted in recent months, COVID-19 is the perfect cover for the government to usher in a massive surveillance state.

Residents in Kentucky are figuring this out firsthand as they have already seen an increase in digital surveillance of smartphone tracking by the government to make sure everyone is practicing social distancing. And now, there’s a new report that shows anyone refusing to quarantine after virus exposure could be subjected to wearing a GPS/cellular ankle bracelet issued by the courts.

As a response to the virus outbreak in the state, Jefferson Circuit Court judge Angela Bisig ordered anyone who has been infected by COVID-19 and fails to isolate will wear an ankle monitoring device.

CNN affiliate WDRB reported last week that Bisig ordered an individual identified as “D.L.” to wear a GPS monitoring device for 14 days after refusing to self-quarantine.

In the court order, D.L. is living with “someone who has tested positive for the illness and another person who is a presumptive case,” according to an affidavit from Dr. Sarah Moyer, director of the health department.

Coronavirus lockdowns shave off almost 30 percent of entire US economy — Moody's

As stay-at-home orders to battle the coronavirus are effective in most states, the virus-related restrictions have already shed 29 percent of US daily output, Moody's Analytics warns as cited by the Wall Street Journal.

The full scale of economic disaster stemming from almost countrywide closures of businesses in various industries — from entertainment to retail — will not be seen for years. However, the first estimates have already started to emerge, and the picture is quite gloomy.

According to Moody's study, which was carried when 41 states shut down non-essential businesses, California alone lost $2.8 billion a day, equivalent of more than 31.5 percent of the state's daily gross domestic product (GDP).

The drop of output in 15 other states, responsible for almost 70 percent of all the US daily GDP, is $12.5 billion, while 30 other states together with Washington DC are losing a total of $4.9 billion of GDP per day.

The economic fallout (in terms of output drop) of the coronavirus crisis has already turned worse that the consequences of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, according to the agency's data. As the result of three weeks of government-imposed closures, US output tumbled by around $350 billion, while the attacks had cut it by an estimated $111 billion in current dollars.

“It's like if Indiana disappeared for an entire year,” the chief economist of Moody's Analytics, Mark Zandi, told the WSJ. “This is a natural disaster. There's nothing in the Great Depression that is analogous to what we're experiencing now.”

Report: Fired Commander of Aircraft Carrier Captain Crozier Tested Positive for Coronavirus

The ex-commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, Navy Capt. Brett Crozier, tested positive for coronavirus before he was removed from command, according to a report.

Crozier began exhibiting symptoms before he was removed from the ship on Thursday, the New York Times reported on Sunday morning, citing two of Crozier’s close friends.

Navy Secretary Thomas Modly fired Crozier on Thursday, after a memo he wrote urging Navy leaders to get sailors off the ship faster in Guam due to a coronavirus outbreak leaked to the San Francisco Chronicle, Crozier’s hometown paper.

Modly said Crozier was not fired for raising concerns, but for emailing the memo over an unsecured and unclassified system and cc’ing more than 20 people, including some outside the chain of command, and for not bringing his concerns to his direct superior, who lived on the ship down the hallway from him.

Leading disease forecasters, whose research the White House used to conclude that 100,000 to 240,000 people will die nationwide from the coronavirus, were mystified when they saw the administration’s projection this week.

The experts said they don’t challenge the numbers’ validity but said they don’t know how the White House arrived at them.

White House officials have refused to explain how they generated the figure – a death toll bigger than the United States suffered in the Vietnam War or the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. They have not provided the underlying data so others can assess its reliability, and have not provided long-term strategies to lower that death count.

YouTube moves to limit spread of false coronavirus 5G theory

YouTube will reduce the amount of content spreading conspiracy theories about links between 5G technology and coronavirus that it recommends to users, it has said, as four more attacks were recorded on phone masts within 24 hours.

The online video company will actively remove videos that breach its policies, it said. But content that is simply conspiratorial about 5G mobile communications networks, without mentioning coronavirus, is still allowed on the site.

YouTube said those videos may be considered “borderline content” and subjected to suppression, including loss of advertising revenue and being removed from search results on the platform.

New York reports first decline in daily deaths from coronavirus

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that Saturday showed the first decrease in daily coronavirus deaths for the state, in what may be a promising trend for the state’s handling of the pandemic.

During a Sunday press briefing, Cuomo displayed a graph showing the trend of cases, with 562 deaths on Thursday, 630 on Friday and then back down to 594 on Saturday. He said the new numbers could indicate the state has reached its apex for the virus, but cautioned it may be too early to tell.

“The number of deaths over the past few days has been dropping, for the first time,” Cuomo said before cautioning, “What is the significance of that? It’s too early to tell.”

Cuomo said daily visits to intensive care units (ICU) is down and the number of daily cases requiring intubation is also down. He added that the discharge rate was also “way up.”
