'Surreal': NY funeral homes struggle as virus deaths surge

NEW YORK β€” Pat Marmo walked among 20 or so deceased in the basement of his Brooklyn funeral home, his protective mask pulled down so his pleas could be heard.

 

"Every person there, they're not a body," he said. "They're a father, they're a mother, they're a grandmother. They're not bodies. They're people."

 

Like many funeral homes in New York and around the globe, Marmo's business is in crisis as he tries to meet surging demand amid the coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 2,200 people in New York City alone. His two cellphones and the office line are ringing constantly. He's apologizing to families at the start of every conversation for being unusually terse, and begging them to insist hospitals hold their dead loved ones as long as possible.

 

His company is equipped to handle 40 to 60 cases at a time, no problem. On Thursday morning, it was taking care of 185.

 

"This is a state of emergency," he said. "We need help."

 

Funeral directors are being squeezed on one side by inundated hospitals trying to offload bodies, and on the other by the fact that cemeteries and crematoriums are booked for a week at least, sometimes two.

 

Marmo let The Associated Press into his Daniel J. Schaefer funeral home in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn on Thursday to show how dire the situation has become.

 

He has about 20 embalmed bodies stored on gurneys and stacked on shelves in the basement and another dozen in his secondary chapel room, both chilled by air conditioners.

 

He estimated that more than 60% had died of the new coronavirus. For most people, the virus causes mild or moderate symptoms, but for some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness and lead to death.

 

"It's surreal," he said.

 

Hospitals in New York have been using refrigerated trucks to store the dead, and Marmo is trying to find his own. One company quoted him a price of $6,000 per month, and others are refusing outright because they don't want their equipment used for bodies.

 

Even if he gets a truck, he has nowhere obvious to put it. He's wondering if the police station across the street might let him use its driveway.

 

He's also hoping the Environmental Protection Agency will lift regulations that limit the hours crematoriums can operate. That would ease some of the backlog.

 

"I need somebody to help me," he said. "Maybe if they send me refrigeration, or guide me in a way that I could set up a refrigerated trailer that I could keep, and I could supervise."

 

Patrick Kearns, a fourth-generation funeral director in Queens, said the industry has never experienced anything like this. His family was prepared on 9/11 for their business to be overrun, but with so many bodies lost amid the rubble, the rush never came.

Hospital ship remains empty as New York battles COVID-19

 

A military hospital ship which arrived in New York City on Monday is fighting to stay in a coronavirus-free "bubble" so as not to risk bringing the disease on board, its medical officer said.

 

The 1,000-bed USNS Comfort, previously deployed to conflict and natural disaster zones, was sent to Manhattan to ease the strain on health centers in the city at the epicenter of America's outbreak by caring for patients other than those diagnosed with the virus.

 

By Friday it had received 21 patients, according to the ship's press officer Lieutenant Commander Amelia Umayam.

 

"We consider the USNS Comfort to be in a bubble," said medical officer Captain Patrick Amersbach as he explained the procedures followed by the ship's crew to shield it from the virus, including not disembarking for as long as it is docked.

 

Patients are arriving directly from New York hospitals and will be screened in advance to make sure they are free of the coronavirus.

 

For the time being, even relatives of patients are not allowed to board the ship – though Amersbach said a protocol for loved ones to visit was being put in place "because nobody wants to be without their family members."

 

If a worker needs to board the ship to perform installations or repairs, they must be examined, wash their hands in front of a witness, and put on a mask before being escorted to the precise location on the ship where they will work.

 

Once finished, they will be escorted directly off again.

 

New York City has had more than 57,000 positive coronavirus cases since the arrival of the pandemic and 1,867 deaths.

 

The nearby Javits Center, which has been converted into a field hospital by the US military and was not originally intended to house coronavirus patients, will now do so.

 

But there are no plans for the USNS Comfort to make such a move.

 

"We're going to try and stay in that bubble," said Amersbach.

Israeli police detain Jerusalem governor

 

Israeli police on Sunday detained Jerusalem Governor Adnan Ghaith, reports Anadolu Agency and local media outlets.

 

A video released by the Jerusalem-based Wadi Hilweh Information Center showed police forcefully detaining Ghaith from his home in Jerusalem’s neighborhood of Silwan.

 

Ghaith has been detained several times in recent months.

 

The reason behind the detention remains unclear and the Israeli police have yet to issue an official statement.

 

In February, Israeli occupation authorities banned Adnan Ghaith from entering the West Bank for six months and from communicating with the Palestinian Authority (PA), despite being the PA’s governor. He was previously arrested by Israeli forces in October 2019, and then again in November 2019.

 

Ghaith’s arrest comes two days after Israeli forces arrested Palestine’s Jerusalem Affairs Minister Fadi Al-Hadami on Friday for allegedly violating an Israeli ban on Palestinian political activities in occupied East Jerusalem. The Jerusalem Affairs Ministry said in a statement that Israeli police raided the minister’s house in the Silwan neighbourhood of Jerusalem and took him into custody.

 

PLO Executive Committee Hanan Ashrawi accused the Israeli occupation of undermining Palestinian efforts in the battle against coronavirus, referring to the Israeli escalation against Palestinian officials in Jerusalem, including the repeated detention of Jerusalem’s Minister Fadi Al-Hadami.

Coronavirus: Ultra-orthodox Jews cough on Israeli police, calling them 'Nazis'

 

Videos circulating on social media show Ultra-Orthodox Jews in the Israeli town of Bnei Brak coughing on police and calling them β€œmurderers” and β€œNazis” amid efforts by the government to combat the spread of coronavirus.

Wash hands frequently and before removing the mask.

Gov. Gavin Newsom launches task force to increase COVID-19 testing by five-fold

 

OAKLAND, Calif. - California Governor Gavin Newsom has launched a new task force to help increase testing for COVID-19.

The goal is to increase testing five-fold by the end of the month.

This will be done by making available more tests and testing sites.

 

As of Saturday, California has tested 126,700 people.

Newsom says that number is far too small, and he is promising to do better.

β€œI'm not going to explain away why we didn't do more and better all I can say is we're going to do more and better and we own that I own that,” said Newsom.

 

Newsom says his new task force will address the problem.

Each day, about two-thousand Californians are tested for Coronavirus.

The task force plans to increase that to 25,000 a day by the end of April, and even more beyond, according to the task force co-chair.

 

β€œIf we're going to really avoid overloading the healthcare system, avoid unnecessary deaths, and get out of these social isolation measures and people can go back into their more normal day-to-day lives, we're going to need to have very, very broad testing out there,” said Paul Markovitch, CEO of Blueshield California.

In a partnership with UC Davis and UC San Diego, a hub system will be created throughout the state so that a testing site is within an hour drive for every Californian.

Testing at the point of care will also be expanded in partnership with Abbott Labs.

 

Newsom also debuted a new website – www.covid19supplies.ca.gov – a portal allowing individuals and companies to donate, sell, or offer to manufacture essential medical supplies.

β€œWe have 13 critical areas of medical supplies that we are looking for, obviously ventilators, N95, masks, surgical masks, conferrals, exam gowns, face shield goggles,” said Newsom.

Compared to states like New York, California is faring well in the war against COVID-19.

The governor issued the country's first statewide stay at home order.

 

While acknowledging testing is lagging, health officials say California's aggressive action appears to be working.

β€œThere's no question in my mind from what I'm seeing in the data and what I'm seeing elsewhere that it is making a difference,” said Markovitch.

Gov. Newsom also announced Saturday a collaboration with Stanford Medicine, which is developing a type a blood test to see if someone has already developed antibodies to COVID-19.

Late on April 3, the U.S.-led coalition air dropped logistic and military supplies for its troops in the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor.

 

The North Press Agency (NPA) released a video showing a U.S. C-130 cargo plane dropping the supplies from a low altitude. The supplies landed near the al-Omar oil fields in southeast Deir Ezzor, and were later distributed to coalition bases in the fields and in the nearby Conico gas factory.

 

The coalition usually ships supplies to its troops in northeast Syria through the Semalka border crossing with the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. However, the river crossing is currently unsafe due to floods. This explains why the coalition opted to air drop the supplies.

 

Earlier this week, dozens of trucks loaded with supplies for coalition troops entered northeast Syria through Semalka. The supplies were deployed in key coalition bases near the Rmelan oil fields in northern al-Hasakah and the area of al-Shaddadi in the southern countryside of the governorate.

India is banning all exports of hydroxychloroquine for treating the coronavirus pandemic.

 

President Trump first touted the drug during a daily press conference and was widely mocked and ridiculed by the enemedia.

 

 

India banned all exports of hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug that President Donald Trump has touted as a β€œgame changer” in the fight against Covid-19.

 

Exports of the drug and its formulations are prohibited β€œwithout any exceptions” and with immediate effect, India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in an April 4 order on its website. The trade regulator had last month restricted overseas shipments of the drug, allowing only limited exceptions such as on humanitarian grounds and for meeting prior commitments.

 

At a press conference on Saturday, Trump said he spoke to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and appealed for the release of shipments U.S. has already ordered. India is giving his request β€œserious consideration,” he said.

Between 38 million and 54 million people have been stricken with the flu as of March 14, according to the latest CDC data.

 

By some indicators, this flu season is worse than last flu season. For example, the data shows the cumulative hospitalization rate for the flu so far this season is 65.1 per 100,000 people, compared with 48.8 per 100,000 at the same point last season.

 

According to CDC, this year's flu season has led to at least 17 million medical visits and 390,000 hospitalizations. CDC found that the percentage of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness increased to 5.8% in the week ending on March 14, up from 5.2% the previous week. The national baseline for those visits is 2.4%.

 

CDC in its latest report estimated that there had been at least 23,000 deaths related to the flu as of March 14.

Turkish Military Sets Three β€˜Observation’ Posts Near Jihadist Stronghold In Syria’s Idlib

 

On April 5, the Turkish military established three new β€œobservation” posts in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.

 

The new posts were established next to the towns of Baksariya, al-Z’ainiyah and Furaykah. The three towns are located in the countryside of Jisr al-Shughur in the northwestern part of Idlib.

 

Jisr al-Shughur is known to be a stronghold of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP). The Turkish military couldn’t have established these new posts without some sort of an understanding with these terrorist groups.

 

All three observation posts overlook the M4 highway, which links the port city of Lattakia with Aleppo city, the industrial hub of Syria.

 

Turkey committed to reopen the M4 under the March 5 agreement with Russia. However, the highway is still blocked by opposition supporters and radical militants, who organize protests there on a regular basis.

 

While the establishment of new posts on the M4 could help secure it, there is nothing indicating that Turkey is planning to do so. The Turkish military appear to be preparing for a new confrontation with the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) once the March 5 agreement collapses.

Casten also asserted the United States shut down its pandemic response team in the National Security Council, a false claim repeated by many Democrats and mainstream media outlets. Trump merely consolidated several redundant teams, including those tasked with the pandemic response, into one office while retaining much of their original staff, according to Tim Morrison, who previously led the consolidated office.

 

Casten has frequently accused Trump and his Republican allies of disseminating misinformation about coronavirus. He went as far as to demand that media outlets refuse to broadcast the president's daily coronavirus press conferences, arguing that the briefings are "getting people killed."

Has the Trump/Putin Thaw Finally Begun?

 

It’s becoming increasingly clear as the Coronapocalypse wreaks havoc on all of our lives that the relationship between China and the U.S. has changed, and not for the better. At every level of state actor we’ve seen a huge increase in the rhetorical hostility between the two nations.

 

From President Trump calling COVID-19 the β€œChina Virus” to the Chinese officially accusing the U.S. of seeding the virus in Wuhan back in October, these interactions signal a big shift is underway. Alexander Mercouris of The Duran has been saying for months that the U.S. and China have been headed for a divorce. And that this divorce is one of Trump’s strategic goals.

 

He recently upgraded that divorce to that of a new Cold War and I have to agree with him. We’re seeing a sudden shift in anti-China coverage coming from CIA house organs like the New York Times and the Washington Post. Both sides are effectively accusing the other of engaging in bioweapons deployment and attack which is very serious when one considers the U.S.’s current nuclear posture.

 

I don’t want to alarm anyone with this statement, because the likelihood of anything like that happening are incredibly low. Instead I want you to consider what the purpose of such rhetoric is.

 

It’s an excuse to ratchet up the domestic propaganda as cover story for how and why both countries are getting very ready to β€œtake their toys and go home.”

 

Against this backdrop of a fundamental shift in U.S./China relations I want to bring up the recent phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Because I feel this phone call highlights a number of significant changes to the landscape both domestically and internationally.

 

Here’s the first one. Putin and Trump talked and the U.S. press didn’t go into apoplexy. The absence of irresponsible histrionics by the likes of Rachel Maddow and Jake Tapper at CNN. Speaker Nancy Pelosi wasn’t rushing to a microphone denouncing Trump. Adam Schiff (remember him?) is AWOL.

 

You would think they would be trying to eviscerate Trump over talking with Putin at this moment in time. The talking points are ready made. β€œHow can this president spend his time taking orders from his master Putin when there are thousands dying in New York?”

 

Because Trump secured a plane full of needed medical equipment from Putin. And these same people are the ones whose lives are now directly threatened by COVID-19. I guess we may have found the limit to their depravity, when their lives are in danger they will back off on the petty, divisive and toxic politics.

 

Maybe they’ll save it for the weekend talk show circuit, but the lack of coverage here even after Trump’s tweets about massive oil production cuts from Russia and Saudi Arabia is telling.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. banks are expected to defend their dividend payments when they submit their annual capital plans to the Federal Reserve on Monday for the upcoming stress tests, the Financial Times reported on Sunday, citing people familiar with the situation.

 

U.S. lenders face growing pressure to follow their European counterparts and non-financial companies and cut dividends, as the chinavirus crisis puts a record number of people out of work, which could make it harder for borrowers to repay loans. Banks may need cash to cover those losses, critics argue.

 

But over the past week, executives from Citigroup Inc (C.N), Morgan Stanley (MS.N) and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) have defended their plans to continue paying dividends to shareholders, saying their banks are well-capitalized enough to do so.

Bill Gates: Pandemic is β€˜nightmare scenario,’ but national response can reduce casualties

 

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has called the coronavirus pandemic a β€œnightmare scenario”, but was optimistic the number of fatalities could be reduced.

 

Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates, who warned five years ago that the world’s greatest threat was a pandemic, believes that the current coronavirus crisis is β€œa nightmare scenario,” but said social distancing and a strong national response can keep casualties lower than the numbers projected by US President Donald Trump.

 

Mr Gates shared his views on the TV show Fox News Sunday.

 

Mr Trump had predicted last week that the US could see between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths from COVID-19 before the outbreak is under control.

 

β€œWell, if we do the social distancing properly, we should be able to get out of this with the death number well short of that,” Mr Gates told Fox News, saying that the disruptions to everyday life have been key to keeping the pandemic from being even worse.

 

β€œThis is a nightmare scenario because human-to-human transmittal respiratory viruses can grow exponentially,” he said.

 

β€œAnd you know, if we had kept on going to work, travelling like we were, you know, that curve would never bend until you had the majority of the people infected and then a massive number seeking hospital care and lots of lots of deaths.”

 

Mr Gates suggested the response should be on a national, not state or local level.

 

So far, it has been state governors who have led the charge, in some cases claiming that their populations are not being properly served by federal government in Washington.

 

β€œWell, when you have finite resources you need to allocate them to where there’s the most need,” Mr Gates said. β€œCertainly because people move around the country, we have to have the shutdown or else you’ll have exponential growth [in the virus]. It will spread back into other parts of the country.”

As a response to the virus outbreak in the state, Jefferson Circuit Court judge Angela Bisig ordered anyone who has been infected by COVID-19 and fails to isolate will wear an ankle monitoring device.

 

CNN affiliate WDRB reported last week that Bisig ordered an individual identified as β€œD.L.” to wear a GPS monitoring device for 14 days after refusing to self-quarantine.

 

In the court order, D.L. is living with β€œsomeone who has tested positive for the illness and another person who is a presumptive case,” according to an affidavit from Dr. Sarah Moyer, director of the health department.

New York reports first decline in daily deaths from coronavirus

 

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that Saturday showed the first decrease in daily coronavirus deaths for the state, in what may be a promising trend for the state’s handling of the pandemic.

 

During a Sunday press briefing, Cuomo displayed a graph showing the trend of cases, with 562 deaths on Thursday, 630 on Friday and then back down to 594 on Saturday. He said the new numbers could indicate the state has reached its apex for the virus, but cautioned it may be too early to tell.
