Horns of Jericho: How the CIA Adopted a Nazi Terror Siren for US Psyops

Newly declassified documents from the US Central Intelligence Agency reveal that the espionage outfit attempted to build psychological warfare devices similar to those mounted on the Ju-87 Stuka dive bombers by the Nazis.

The sound of the Stuka’s air sirens is unmistakable; if you’ve ever seen a film with a prop-driven plane in it, you probably heard it as an added sound effect. However, the noise isn’t natural: it’s made from a special device mounted under the plane that produces its characteristic whine when air is rammed through it at a sufficient speed - for example, when accelerating during a steep dive-bombing attack.

The Nazis called the device a “Jericho Trumpet,” after the Biblical story in the Book of Joshua in which the Israelites caused the walls of Jericho to crumble by blowing their ram’s horns at it - after God told them to, of course. However, when the CIA tried to replicate the device in the 1950s, it called it a Jericho Horn or, alternately but perhaps no less appropriately, the “Screamer Project.”

The purpose of the device for both the Germans and Americans was purely psychological: to spread fear among the population under attack, in line with prevailing theories about the ability of aircraft to decide wars through terror bombing.

However, as The War Zone relays in a play-by-play retelling, the CIA brains who wanted a Jericho Trumpet for themselves didn’t know how to make one and embarked on an epic journey trying to chase down a preserved Stuka that still had one so they could copy its design.

By 1958, the CIA researchers had two workable models for testing, with theirs including an adjustable “iris” to control air flowing into the Jericho Horn.

According to a series of handwritten notes preserved by CIA archivists, they wanted a device that could produce a terrifying and painful sound while the aircraft was flying at roughly 300 mph and just a few hundred feet off the ground. The idea was presumably to make low and fast passes over enemy positions or civilian areas, sowing discord and discomfort.

The device was hooked up to an AT-11 Kansan training aircraft and later a Cessna 180, but after numerous tests, they couldn’t get it to make a sound louder than 108 decibels, which The War Zone notes is about as loud as a chain saw - not exactly terrifying. The scientists had set a goal of 170 to 180 decibels.

It seems testing continued into 1959, but by the spring of 1958, the CIA’s curiosity had apparently wandered to other projects.

"At present the 'Jericho Horn' does not satisfy this requirement and it is doubtful that continued effort will achieve this end," says a report dated March 31, 1958.

FBI Received Evidence Of Russian Disinformation In Steele Dossier

The FBI received information that Russian disinformation might have been fed to Christopher Steele, whose dossier played a “central” role in the bureau’s investigation of the Trump campaign.

The bombshell disclosures are in newly unredacted footnotes contained in the Justice Department inspector general’s report on the FBI’s surveillance of the Trump campaign.

An FBI unit had concerns as far back as 2015 about Steele’s relationships with Russian oligarchs, one footnote stated.

The FBI was provided assessments that Steele’s claims about Michael Cohen and a trip that Donald Trump made to Moscow in 2013 were products of Russian disinformation, another footnote said.

The FBI received evidence that Russian disinformation polluted the infamous Steele dossier, according to information declassified Friday from the Justice Department inspector general’s report of the FBI’s surveillance of the Trump campaign.

FBI officials also had concerns as far back as 2015 of dossier author Christopher Steele’s relationship to Russian oligarchs, but those were never shared with the FBI team that led the Trump investigation.

Despite those red flags, the FBI continued relying on Steele’s information in applications to obtain surveillance warrants against Carter Page, the former Trump campaign aide.

The bombshell disclosures were made Friday in response to repeated requests from Sens. Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson to disclose four redacted footnotes in the IG report.

“It’s ironic that the Russian collusion narrative was fatally flawed because of Russian disinformation,” the two Republicans said in a statement. “These footnotes confirm that there was a direct Russian disinformation campaign in 2016, and there were ties between Russian intelligence and a presidential campaign – the Clinton campaign, not Trump’s.”

But first some background: the Fed's revised, and massively expanded, Secondary Market Corporate Credit Facility - which now can purchase 'fallen angel' junk bonds - will now be funded with $25 billion of equity capital from the Treasury as opposed to $10 billion previously. The leverage on the equity will be 10x for IG-rated bonds, 7x for bonds below IG, and in a range of 3x to 7x for any other eligible asset. The scope of the facility was also expanded, and in what was the biggest news of Thursday, while it was originally targeted toward IG bonds from US issuers and US-listed IG ETFs, the facility can now also purchase:

BB-rated bonds of recent “fallen angels” so long as they were IG rated as of March 22, 2020, and

HY ETFs, although the “preponderance” of ETF holdings are expected to be IG.

Additionally, as Goldman notes, while the limits for bond and ETF purchases remain the same (10% of an issuer’s outstanding debt and 20% of ETF assets, respectively), a new comprehensive issuer limit was added: 1.5% of the combined potential size of the Primary and Secondary market facilities (which will be $750 billion, per the above), equating to $11.25 billion. The details on issuer eligibility were also expanded to include being “created or organized” in the United States and having the “majority” of employees based in the United States, which means that many foreign companies will find their bonds purchased under the Fed's "loopholes." Finally, the updated language also makes it clear that Banks are explicitly excluded, in addition to sectors receiving direct government support as part of the CARES Act.

Putting this together, Goldman estimates that the potential size of the eligible universe of bonds under the revised criteria at $1.8 trillion.

DOJ Declassifies 3 Footnotes From Horowitz’s Report Revealing FBI Assessed Steele Dossier Was ‘Russian Disinformation’ – Used it Anyway

CBS News reporter Catherine Herridge obtained an April 2 letter responding to Senators Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley over four key footnotes in IG Horowitz’s report.

As TGP previously reported, Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee Ron Johnson and Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee Chuck Grassley Tuesday sent a letter to Attorney General Bill Barr asking him to declassify four footnotes in Horowitz’s report on FISA abuse.

The Senators stated that the classified footnotes contradict what is publicly available in Horowitz’s report related to Crossfire Hurricane, the CI investigation opened into Trump’s campaign in July of 2016.

Grassley and Johnson wrote, “The American people have a right to know what is contained within these four footnotes and, without that knowledge, they will not have a full picture as to what happened during the Crossfire Hurricane investigation.”

The DOJ declassified 3 footnotes with minimal redactions and kept the fourth footnote completely blacked out citing, “unique and significant concerns. The redacted information refers to information received by a member of the Crossfire Hurricane team regarding possible previous attempts by a foreign government to penetrate and research a company or individuals associated with Christopher Steele,” Herridge reported.

One declassified footnote revealed Comey’s FBI knew the Hillary Clinton-funded dossier compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele was bogus Russian disinformation — but they used it anyway to spy on Trump’s campaign.

Mysterious Resistance Group Releases Video Of IED Attack On U.S. Convoy In Northern Iraq

Late on April 9, an Iraqi group identifying itself as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq – ‘Ashab al-Kahf (AK) announced that its “engineer and sabotage units” had targeted a U.S. convoy on the Erbil-Saladin highway in the country’s northern region.

The group released a video of the alleged operation, showing two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) hitting trucks transporting vehicles for the U.S. military.

AK claimed that the attack resulted in material and human losses. However, these claims are yet to be verified. The U.S.-led coalition has not commented on this issue, thus far.

Founded in August of 2019, AK is a pro-Iran Shiite group. The group has been threatening U.S. forces in Iraq for months now.

Last January, the U.S. assassinated Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) Deputy-Commander, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and Iran Quds Force Commander, Maj. Gen. Qassim Soleimani, in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

Syria, Russia: U.S. hampers health care for displaced in al-Rukban, al-Hol camps

Moscow, SANA_ Syria and Russia affirmed that the illegal presence of the US occupation forces in the Syrian territories is the main obstacle which hamper guaranteeing the health safety of the displaced people in al-Rukban and al-Houl camps.

The Syrian and Russian Coordinating Bodies on the Return of Syrian Refugees, in a joint statement released Friday, warned of the danger of the novel Coronavirus(Covid-19) outbreak in these two camps.

The region occupied by the US forces in Syria, according to the two bodies, does not witness any control measures on the epidemiological situation at all as al-Rukban and al-Hol camps lack the medicines and qualified doctors and the health care centers do not operate there.

The two bodies renewed their call for the rapid evacuation of all those wishing to leave al-Rukban camp to their liberated areas where all conditions have been created to receive them, and steps are being taken to confront the spread of the pandemic.

“Despite the anti-Coronavirus measures taken by the Syrian state, which the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international health organizations have recognized as effective, the United States rudely continues to use the pandemic crisis to defame Syria and leads a media campaign to raise suspicion concerning its ability to effectively confront the pandemic spread in the country and hold it responsible for the worsening of the epidemiological situation in al-Rukban and al-Houl camps”. The two bodies concluded.

The US occupation forces are holding thousands of civilians in al-Tanf area near the Syrian-Jordanian border; thousands also reside in al-Hol camp in Hasaka, which is controlled by the US-backed “SDF” groups and suffer from a major shortage of life’s necessities.

Investigative report: Disabled, elderly at ‘back of the line’ for COVID-19 care in at least 25 states

Some state guidelines said patients with cystic fibrosis shouldn't even be considered for ventilators; six states say hospitals should consider taking ventilators away from patients who rely on them in daily life if others need them more, a practice advocates say would discourage people with disabilities from even seeking treatment for COVID-19.

UNITED STATES, April 9, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — Coronavirus patients with disabilities or over a certain age could be placed at “the back of the line for life-saving treatment” in states across America in the event of a shortage of medical supplies such as ventilators, according to an investigative report by The Center for Public Integrity.

The report analyzed the emergency rationing or “crisis standards of care” policies of 30 states and concluded that 25 of them “had provisions of the sort advocates fear will send people with disabilities to the back of the line for life-saving treatment.” The Center for Public Integrity says that the other 20 states had either “not established rationing policies or did not release them.”

Among the report’s findings are (emphasis added):

Policies and guidelines in 14 states, including Alabama’s, put patients with specific criteria or diagnoses at the back of the ventilator line in a way disability advocates decry as discriminatory. Alabama, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Texas and Utah direct hospitals to take dementia into account. In Washington, the state's guidelines say doctors should consider “baseline functional status” when determining whether to move patients to end-of-life care, including “loss of reserves in energy, physical ability, cognition and general health.”

Policies and guidelines in five states—Alaska, Florida, Oklahoma, Vermont and Wisconsin—specify that patients with cystic fibrosis, a genetic lung disease that affects about 30,000 people in the U.S., should not be considered for a ventilator.

Policies in 13 states direct hospitals to evaluate whether patients need “assistance with activities of daily living” or would need more resources than other patients, such as home oxygen or dialysis.

Policies in six states—Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota and New York—say hospitals should consider taking ventilators away from patients who rely on them in daily life if others need them more, a practice advocates say would discourage people with disabilities from even seeking treatment for COVID-19.

Policies in 16 states took into account how many more years patients are likely to live, beyond their immediate illnesses. Advocates say that could lead to all sorts of discrimination against the disabled, many of whom already have lived much longer than their initial prognoses.

The report also argues that “states need to have policies in place now, before coronavirus cases peak, and should not cloak them in secrecy” because if doctors are left without clear guidance to make decisions on who lives and who dies in a crisis situation, then there is a risk that they will “lean on personal biases and stereotypes, even unwittingly.
