CDC director warns US needs to plan 'agressively' for coronavirus return in winter

The head of the Centers for Disease Control is warning the United States should expect to see a revitalization in the coronavirus pandemic as the weather gets colder toward the end of the year. During a Wednesday interview on Good Morning America, Dr. Robert Redfield predicted that similar to other respiratory viruses that are more prominent in the colder months, the coronavirus will return. “I think we have to assume this is like other respiratory viruses, and there will be a seasonality to it,” Redfield stated. “The CDC is science-based, data-driven, [so] until we see it, we don’t know for certain [there will be a resurgence],” he added. “But it is critical that we plan that this virus is likely to follow a seasonality pattern similar to flu, and we’re going to have another battle with it upfront and aggressively next winter.”

Redfield also explained that the country needs to ramp up its testing capacity soon and implement other control measures, such as early case recognition and contact tracing, to prepare for the possibility of the next large outbreak. "The outbreak this year got ahead of that, so it went into full mitigation, and we lost the ability to use these critical public health tools," he continued. "We are working hard to augment them now so that as we get into the next season, we’ll be able to stay in high containment mode while we complement with that, some continued mitigation strategies." Redfield went on to praise the American people, noting that original death toll estimates eclipsed 2 million people and that the expected death toll in the U.S. is much lower after much of the country was put under stay-at-home orders. There have been more than 614,000 confirmed coronavirus diagnoses in the U.S. to date, resulting in more than 26,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.
